Protesters boo top U.S. diplomat Rice during her tour of England

Demonstrators booed, chanted ''Condoleezza Rice go home'' and called the U.S. secretary of state a war criminal as she joined British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on a tour Friday of northern England.

About 200 demonstrators _ students and their parents _ protested Rice's visit to Pleckgate School. Some carried signs that read: ''How many lives per gallon?'' and ''Blood, Lies, Oil, War.'' Police in Blackburn _ a city of about 140,000 with the country's third-highest Muslim population _ kept the demonstrators behind a fence in an adjoining playing field. A majority of the students at Pleckgate School are Muslim.

Rice had planned to visit a mosque later Friday but officials canceled the trip because anti-war protesters said they would heckle her during prayer time, a mosque leader said. A prominent poet and actress pulled out of planned appearances at a Liverpool Philharmonic concert in protest of U.S. foreign policy....

Opponents of the Iraq war set up a Web site, http://www.condiwatch.co.uk, that listed times and locations for marches and gatherings. Protestersplanned to distribute T-shirts that read, ''Fab Four, Not War,'' in reference to Liverpool's most famous export, The Beatles.

4. Rice shrugs off anti-war protests
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 07:25 AM by cal04
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice shrugged off protests over the US-led war in Iraq at the start of a tour today of northwest England hosted by her British counterpart Jack Straw. "I would say to those who wish to protest, 'By all means, I have no problem with people exercising their democratic rights'," Ms Rice said at a BAE Systems factory in Samlesbury, on the outskirts of Blackburn.

Her reciprocal visit to Mr Straw's hometown of Blackburn, after his trip last year to her native Alabama, met with a chilly reception from both anti-war protesters and press reports of a US-British dispute over defence technology. As soon as she arrived at a school in Blackburn, Ms Rice was greeted by 200 protesters, some waving placards stamped with "stop the war," and many shouting "Hey, hey Condi Rice, how many kids have you killed today?"

The refrain echoed the one shouted at "LBJ, how many kids have you killed today?" when US President Lyndon Baines Johnson was leading the United States in its war in Vietnam in the 1960s. The protesters, who included women wearing Muslim headscarves, also chanted: "Condoleezza Rice go home". Some carried placards saying: "Stop the war" and "How many lives per gallon?" Jabbar Khan, 16, a student at the school, was among those on the other side who supported Ms Rice. "We should be proud to have such a high-profile visitor to our school," he said to AFP.
