4. Thats amazing change because the victim is black
...or perhaps she doesnt know that yet. In the past unless the victim was a white female with a large family they didnt give a damn.

10. I'm very curious what percentage
of MSNBC viewership immediately turns the
channel as soon as Rita 'Foghorn' Cosby comes on.

I guess if you compared Keith's viewership to hers
you'd have an approximate number.

Anyone know the viewership of both shows?

13. Well, at least she's Black like me
That's a ocean of change. I believe that ANYONE who's affected by crime, whether it be murder, assault, molestation, kidnapping etc, she have access to whatever media to get the story out and solidify the help of the public to help them solve their problems and get some measure of justice, hopefully. It's about damn time that it appears that the media has noticed the public at large becoming aware of the obvious biases when it comes to coverage of criminal impact against the different cultural, ethnic and ECONOMIC groups in this country.

14. Actually I am glad. Duke needs to have their lid blown off.
The relationship between Duke and Durham is really rocky.

Duke University (and hospital) is the largest (or one of the largest)land owners in the county and because they are affiliated with the Methodist church they don't pay property taxes - including on their first class 18 hole golf course and hotel complex. The result of this (and other favorable policies Duke has engineered or should I say pushed down our throats)is that property taxes for everyone else are very high.

Duke's freshman orientation is not unlike the Bush WH line - be afraid, be very afraid. Don't go out into the awful community - something bad might happen to you. Duke uses this fear to keep income on campus and not spent out in the community. Then Duke complains that Durham isn't up to their standards.

Duke is referred to by the townies as a plantation. I refer to it as St. Michael's Mount.

15. Yale used to have a similar situation with respect to New Haven.
For the most part, anyway, used to have. Yale students today generally view New Haven as a suitably diverse community filled with plenty of opportunities to do volunteer work.

Yale also has a PILOT (Payment In Lieu Of Taxes) program which has alleviated the financial impact its nonprofit status has on the city.

The relevance of all this? Duke's new president, Richard Brodhead, came from -- Yale. Let's see if he brings any of that "town-gown" experience with him to Durham.

23. Glad to hear that the town-gown situation for New Haven has
improved. I recently had a conversation with a former New Haven townie who said that Yale is just as bad as Duke. My response was - that can't be true because after all it is "public policy Yale" not "nouveauriche Duke".

I hope Dick is able to make improvements here but I won't hold my breath. The level of institutional arrogance is staggering.

Also, part of the problem is that Durham is 40-45% black and I honestly think that the administration is afraid to allow the kids to go outside the walls.

24. New Haven is at least equally diverse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Haven#Demographics

37% Black, 21% Latino.

Back in the day (before I arrived in '83) Yale literally told students not to go on the stretch of Chapel Street immediately adjacent to campus (in fact, containing the Yale Rep, Arts & Architecture, etc.) Then it got redeveloped, so now it's "safe". What's the holdup down there? The Triangle region as a whole is booming; ironically, it is now a favored destionation for Conn. expats (like the guy you were talking to?)

Another example of an elite university in a diverse and struggling city: Tulane in New Orleans, where it had quietly become the largest employer even before Katrina. Then again, most of the legions of Northern students at Tulane are there specifically to get "outside the walls" and into the city!

20. Actually, that might be encouraging
There were those on another thread who wondered if the likes of Rita Cosby would bother with the Duke story, what with the victims being a couple o' darkies and all.

But then again, I've had thoughts that perhaps I've been to rash in railing against the media's obsession with missing blond girls. There are two missing black boys here in Milwaukee, and for some reason that's made the national news.

Why does the national news pick one story, and ignore another? It seems to arbitrary. They're still avoiding real news and investigative journalism.
