VICTORY --Keith Olbermann Beats CNN
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 04:23 PM by kpete
Tuesday, Mar 28

In the first quarter of 2006, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann beat CNN's Paula Zahn Now in the 25-54 demographic. "This marks MSNBC's first quarterly primetime victory over CNN in the demo in almost five years (2Q01 MSNBC Investigates beat CNN at 8 p.m. ET)," MSNBC's press release said today.

Countdown averaged 164,000 total viewers in the quarter, up 41% from Q1 2005. Zahn averaged 158,000 demo viewers (down 33 percent), according to MSNBC. Bill O'Reilly averaged 450,000 in the demo (down 24 percent).

Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough are only just now starting to "get it" but their loyalties will not change.

I was so sick of the insanity I could not take it any longer. I have seen two shows of KOs and I liked them. I will try a few more. I still refuse to even glance at any others...

If it were not for Keith Olberman, I would never watch MSNBC! Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough are as bad as Faux News pundits.

88. There's just someting about watching tweety though;
I can't stand him on a daily basis (we all know why) but when somehting big happens, I'll admit to tuning in tweety. It's fascinating to watch him shill for the right-wing in such a moronic fashion.

I'm not usually a rage-aholic, but when I need my dose of rage-ahol, I know Matthews has me covered!

And since I can't stomach ANY of Fox News, and want to jump into the TV and pummel Scarborough, Matthews is my only real alternative. ;)

tonight, his interview with Michael Schiavo, prerecorded and played tonight, was excellent.

76. That interview may have shown great disrespect to Mr. Olbermann
It should be noted that last night's interview was nearly two months old. It has been reported, albeit by a questionable source, that the delay was because of NBC in-office political bullshit.

From Loathsome Lloyd Grove's NY Daily News column of 2/8/06:

In August he was reamed out by MSNBC president Rick Kaplan for his perhaps too graphic commentary about Peter Jennings' death. But last week Olbermann was reamed out by a higher-ranking TV exec — NBC News president Steve Capus — over his long interview with famous widower Michael Schiavo.

Capus scorched Olbermann for stepping on a carefully orchestrated Matt Lauer-"Today" show-"Dateline NBC" exclusive. The Lauer package was pegged to Dutton's March 27 release of "Terri: The Truth," Schiavo's tell-all about his late wife's short life, lingering death and accompanying media circus.

I hear Capus calmed down when Olbermann assured him he didn't know about the previous deal, because he landed his interview through direct contacts, not Dutton, and Schiavo never informed him.

Capus last week let Olbermann air highlights — in which the newly remarried Schiavo tears up and slams Republicans and President Bush for interfering. But MSNBC still didn't promote it outside the little-watched cable outlet. It will air an Olbermann-Schiavo special only after Lauer does his thing.

91. Sounds like a scheduling and booking spat more than a real fight.
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 01:02 PM by Radio_Lady
Perhaps NBC isn't talking to MSNBC about a master booking schedule. This is an internal struggle.

Matt Lauer is certainly a higher-paid talent than Keith Olbermann, and Matt's shows are watched by more people. The network wants to insure it doesn't scoop itself. (I also saw Keith after Peter Jenning's death. What was there to complain about? Keith chose to show photos of a growth in his mouth which was removed, and vowed to QUIT SMOKING.)

Michael Schiavo appeared on CNN this week also, and not sure whether it was before or after Keith's interview aired.

These scraps go on all the time. I used to work with entertainment bookings at the NBC "Tonight" show. That was many years ago, before there were so many outlets. I'm sure it's a much more fierce struggle these days as everyone tries to book the same guests "first" and sometimes "exclusively."

By the way, Schiavo mentioned his new political website which looks interesting. I hope he becomes a spokesperson for death with dignity, unfettered by politics. IMHO, the right wing pro-life political zealots had no place in this situation last year.

93. It sounds more like ego
I'm sure the battles go on, like Leno vs. Letterman, but this is NBC vs. MSNBC. Same company, same team. Or, at least, it should be the same team. Instead, the twits on the Today Show are doing crap like this or booking O'Reilly and ignoring (or even worse, disrespecting) Mr. Olbermann.

Sure, Lauer is a higher paid "talent" ("talent"! Now that's funny!), but they're all in the same company. Lauer isn't going anywhere, he's reached the peak. Thus, he could have recognized that he doesn't need the scoop and, since Mr. Olbermann got his interview through honest means, he could have shown the ability to be a team player. He still had the first network interview, but that wasn't good enough to feed the ego.

BTW, your time at the Tonight Show, was it before, during, or after Helen Kushnick?

101. I was there in the mid-1960s when Johnny Carson was still in NY.
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 01:30 AM by Radio_Lady
I worked with his brother, Dick Carson, who was directing the program, and Skitch Henderson's group provided the music. Also worked in the news unit for a fellow named Gene ??? and God knows I've tried to recall his last name, but can't do it. I do remember the composer Robert Russell Bennett who composed the music for "Victory at Sea" -- he was a tall and elderly man and he called me ARIEL the water sprite. (He gave special names to all the production assistants in the unit.) Just a sweetheart of a man.

Looks as if Helen Kushnick was there in the 1970s with Jay Leno.

http://talkshows.about.com/library/weekly/aa051799.htm

By 1971, I was back in Florida working as an unpaid screener (answers called before they go on the air) on Larry King's 11 PM to 5 AM overnight show at WIOD. When Larry was arrested a few days before Christmas 1971, I took over his show. I was there until April 1972, when Boston beckoned and I started on WEEI Radio, a CBS owned and operated station, on May 15, 1972. First female with a full time talk radio show in Boston SIX days a week from 10 AM to 2 PM and then took care of my two small kids, ages 1 and 2, as I was a single mother divorced from their father.

Glad to do it!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

103. Wow. You must have some amazing stories from that time.
Reading your post reminded me that you probably have the type of entertainment history recollections that Mark Evanier often has in his blog. Not at all tabloidy, but usually fond anecdotes and memories of sometimes big stars and also behind the scenes folks, with equal respect for all who deserved it.

Kushnick (from the 90's, not 70's) elevated booking between Leno and Arsenio Hall to a war, until Ken Kragen went public and NBC forced her out. This was recounted in Bill Carter's "The Late Shift" book (also a movie).

ON EDIT: I should check out "The Late Shift" (1996) directed by Betty Thomas. It's been recommended to me before. Did you see the movie? Perhaps it's available on VHS (DVD listing is grayed out on the link below). Looks like Amazon has a bunch of copies if I really want it.

105. The book and movie were both good
It was one case where the movie didn't lose much from the book (I think because Bill Carter was involved with the screenplay as well). The two actors playing Leno and Letterman start off being a distraction since the real hosts are so established in the psyche, but you learn to accept it since they aren't there for acting prowess but to move the plot along. Kathy Bates did a very convincing job as Kuchnick. And it was fun watching Rich Little do a role he's done for laughs so many times.

Every once in a while, I'll see it on one of the HBO channels, so you might catch it then.

87.  here in SoCal

Macy's had screens in the waiting areas of the women's fitting rooms. ALL the three screens had FOX on w/ a note on the bottom from management that FOX and a sports channel were the ONly channels allowed.

I fought Macy's to the top on this ( they claim they just want to provide public service ) and I ended up cancelling my credit cards and have boycotted them ever since.

I have been to a couple of restaurants here in SoCal, ( Black Angus is one ) where FOX was on in the bar and when I left I mentioned they should turn it off.

67. It "Depends".....O'Lielly gets the geriatric crowd.......
(pun intended) who are more apt to be sitting in from of their TVs on any given night. Most of them can't get out of their chairs without assistance from the local fire department (hey I'm almost in that age group, I can use "old people" jokes ;) ). O'Lielly's share is dropping like a stone though, looks like even the senior citizens are fed up with his bullshit.

KO is hitting the right demographic, the one that spends the most money and THAT is a huge victory. Congratulations to KO, it's the only cable news show I ever watch and his share keeps growing! :yourock:

Don't get me wrong ... I enjoy Oddball as much as the next intellectual, but after Donahue was taken off the air I didn't want to see his replacement.

I think many of us misunderstand Olbermann - perhaps it's the time I spent around celebrities but I don't think we'd enjoy his company in real life ... and I don't think he'd be less critical if someone we supported were in office.

Is Olberman on a positive trend? Yes.

Donahue doesn't detract from that. And I don't care if I'd like him in person.

Your comments about his success seem to be more about your personal feelings about him and the Donahue slot.

Or worse yet, none at all. When CNN or CNBC or anyone else but Fox beats Fox, I'll whoop with ya. Until then, I think you're idolizing someone who doesn't really share your sympathies.

Personal? I don't know the dude and frankly, wouldn't want to; celebrities have to be self-absorbed.

For it to be pyrrhic, it has to have no good outcome in the long term. This is not the case here. His ratings can still go up. O'Reilly's can still go down. So, i think you need to review the definition.

The thread's celebrating a "victory" 'cause MSNBC beat CNN in the 8 PM time slot. I'm pointing out that it's meaningless, because you should recognize that the "victor" would turn against our candidate should he/she prevail in the next election. Yeah, the long term prospects for Olbermann are meaningless.

Ah well ... if this is all you've got, enjoy it. But don't say I didn't warn you.

69. I don't know about "liberal" programming....
certainly "truthful" programming. KO has a short tolerance for hypocrisy and the Republican party is up to it's ears in it. If Democrats were pulling the same crap I'm sure KO would be lampooning them as well. All I ever wanted was a level playing field and I think KO delivers that. The same certainly can't be said about O'Lielly and he's hemorrhaging audience share because of it.

From: MSNBC_Olbermann_NewsMail@MSNBC.COM
Subject: White House Change-Up

Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

White House chief of staff Andrew Card has resigned and will be replaced by budget director Joshua Bolten, President Bush announced Tuesday amid growing calls for a White House shake-up and Republican concern about Bush's tumbling poll ratings. Bush announced the changes in an nationally broadcast appearance in the Oval Office. Card came to Bush recently and suggested that he should step down from the job that he has held from the first day of Bush's presidency. Card's last day on the job will be April 14. Bush said he decided last weekend to accept Card's resignation. Bolten is widely experienced in Washington, both on Capitol Hill as well as at the White House, where he was deputy chief of staff before becoming director of the Office of Management and Budget. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12048598/

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

We will air two large (and cocluding) segments of the Michael Schiavo interview today.

Drake University student Skyler Bartels spent part of his spring break living undercover at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Windsor Heights. Bartels didn't last the entire week, but he did manage to stick it out for 41 consecutive hours. Shoppers and employees didn't pay much attention to him, he said, until the end of his stay. Bartels also said he is scheduled to appear tonight on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" on MSNBC. National Public Radio, Bartels added, has penciled in this afternoon for a spot on "All Things Considered," and a radio station from Ireland wants to arrange an interview. Bartels got the idea during a talk with his adviser, Carol Spaulding-Kruse, an associate professor of English. After seeing the discount chain's ads, Bartels wondered whether a person could actually live at a Wal-Mart store. http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060328/NEWS08/603280358/1001/NEWS

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
The singer who dressed as a policeman in the flamboyant late 1970s disco band Village People has been arrested after disappearing while drug and gun charges against him were pending, officials said Monday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12043821/
"It's fun to sing it the J-A-I-L, it's fun to sing it the J-A-I-L... You can't set yourself free, you can't have a good meal, you can't do whatever you feel..."

53. Keef: Best. Newscast. Ever.
Honestly: he does a superb job, almost without precedent in TV news, of creating a show that brings the public and objective view together with the unavoidable personal aspects of the viewer and the broadcaster, and of having a broad enough view to encompass both the deadly serious and trivially comic elements of an ordinary American's day.

85. So why don't they include Comedy Central in the ratings?
Somebody must be keeping track for advertising. The Daily show runs right against o'Liely, doesn't it?

I sometimes watch Olberman, but not consistently like I used to watch CNN. The format is a little strange for me, but at least he occasionally speaks the truth. I could have done without the Michael Jackson puppet show.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the percentage of viewers who CAN view the show actually viewing it (cleaning up the cable companies who don't offer it) and also how many businesses run FOX versus actual private viewers who opted to watch the show. Somehow I don't think the advertising is as effective if you are seeing a snippet of FOX while in the bank (or a restaurant with the sound turned down). I'd think the advertisers would want to know the difference.
