6. Welcome to DU, trantorfoundation...love your handle
But I can't agree that Republicans and "other Christians" should be barred from politics. Where would we all be without the efforts of such Christians as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many, many others, insisting that the country live up to its ideals and protect everyone's rights? Bush is just a passing phenomenon, and so (I hope) are his allegedly "Christian" right-wing allies. Nobody should be barred from politics, but everyone should have to play by the rules, avoid bully-boy tactics, and above all not rely on unverifiable, easily-hacked voting machines.

3. Well, not all of them
There are old-style Republicans who really still think their party is the party
of small government and fiscal responsibility, and has just temporarily lost its
way. They are a dwindling minority, though.

To give you an idea of what the U.S. Republican party represents abroad, consider this:

In the 1980s, an unreformed Nazi, an ex-SS officer, decided to form a neo-Nazi
party in Germany. The Nazi Party is banned here, so he had to get himself another
name. He found his inspiration in the United States, and his Nazi-clone party was
born. It is called "Die Republikaner." Luckily, they get less than 1% of the vote
nationwide in Germany. I wish I could say the same for their American namesakes.

I always have fun pointing this out to Republicans (the American variety). They
immediately get all huffy and say "are you saying Republicans are Nazis?" I say, "no,
I'm saying I find it very unfortunate that a Nazi Party in Germany finds the Republican
Party in the USA so inspiring as to want to use the same name."

Please. That's the low level of "thinking" that comes out with such brilliant beliefs as: Abu Gharib was no big deal because they chop off heads. This is just idiotic. I condemn this kind of generalization entirely.

13. Thank you Jara, now this fits somewhere.
Shit, fuck, damn, bitch, ass. . .

It has been said over-use of a word reduces its impact. Looking at how casually the words above are tossed around, I can definitely agree with that. There is another word that gets tossed around much too casually in the realm of politics. The word is “Nazi”.

If there is one thing everybody agrees on, it’s that the Nazis were evil. They were without question some of the most evil people in the history of the world. What we all disagree on is what the Nazis were.

There are those who say the Nazis were socialists, and those who say they were capitalists. There are those who put them on the left end of the political spectrum and those who put them on the right. Too often, people from both sides of the aisle attempt to brand their opposites with the label of being Nazis. Does anyone ever consider that by so frequently branding their opponents with a label synonymous with ultimate evil, they are watering down that label?

The Nazis came to power in Germany in the early thirties and proceeded to plunge first their own country, then the world into a nightmare. They made racism national policy. Not just ‘separate but equal’ racism. They instituted genocidal racism. These evil fucks sought to eliminate an entire race of people from the face of the earth. Is there any greater insult to the Jewish people than when some anti-Semitic asshole in a so called peace rally replaces the Star of David with a swastika on an Israeli flag?

The Nazis plunged an entire continent into a war leading to the deaths of more than 10 million people. Does anyone besides me find it beyond ridiculous when somebody calls our current president a Nazi? There is no comparison. None! Zero! Shit! How can you compare the “final solution” to secretly wire-tapping people who may be a threat to the country? Who is so blinded by moral relativism that they can’t see some significant damn differences between Camp X-Ray and Auschwitz? Son of a bitch!

Let’s bring some sanity back into the world of politics, and some meaning back to the word “Nazi”. It’s okay to publicly disagree with our current government. It’s okay to publicly hate our president. In America you have the freedom to do that, which is another reason why comparisons between the US and Nazi Germany are simply idiotic.

Let’s put the word “Nazi” back into the history books, and only use it when we’re talking about an evil Austrian man, his evil political movement, and the evil he did to the world. The only time it would ever be appropriate to apply that word to someone else is when the comparison is valid. Now is not that time.

18. And they would be wrong
"There are those who say the Nazis were socialists, and those who say they were capitalists. There are those who put them on the left end of the political spectrum..."

The extreme of the Right-wing ideology is Fascism.
The extreme of the Left-wing ideology is Communism.

The Nazi's were Fascists - a fact that is only disputed by other Right-wingers and a handful of people who don't understand history.

The Nazi's killed Liberals, blacks, gays, and anyone else who disagreed with them. They used religion, national security, racism, and authoritarianism to control the masses. In other words, Right-wing extremism in a nutshell.

Coming to power under the guise of a Socialist party and then changing that party once in power does not count as Socialism - no matter how much the Right-wing would like it to.

21. Understand History?
In 1936, the Nazi party implemented something called the "Four Year Plan". This plan, under the control of Herman Goering, placed direction of the German economy (including the private sector) under the control of the government.

Government control of the economy, what does that sound like? Hmm. . . .

Communism
1. A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.

2. The Marxist-Leninist version of Communist doctrine that advocates the overthrow of capitalism by the revolution of the proletariat.

27. The issue is not state control but capital.
In communism, or socialism, the state owns the capital, or means of production. While fascism has central control of economic resources, the capital is privately held. Nazi Germany was clearly fascist.

32. Um, . .no they're not.
I present to you the following:

fas·cism ( P ) (fshzm)
n.
1. often Fascism
a. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

b. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.

2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.
(thanks to Dictionary.Com for the definition)

Republicans are not fascists, and this web site alone is the proof. How has the opposition to President Bush been suppressed? If anything, it has done nothing but get louder since he was first inaugurated. If Republicans were truly fascists, this web site would not exist. Arianna Huffington would be in jail. Al Franken would be dead right now rather than promoting a new book.

You are dredging up a truly evil political philosophy and attatching it to something it really has no business being attached to. This is much like the term Nazi. As I said in my original essay, there is no valid comparison between the modern Republican party and the Nazis, nor is there a valid comparison between Republicans and Fascists. I'll even concede right now, there is no valid comparison between the evil political movements of the past and the mordern Democrats either.

I think Ronald Reagan really said it best when he said there is no right or left as regards these evil ideologies. There is only up towards liberty and down towards totalitarianism. The Nazis and Fascists were most definitely down.

We all agree the Nazis and Fascists were evil and the world is better off without them in any position of power. To attempt to draw paralells between them and the modern American government is an exercise in intellectual dishonesty. You devalue history for the sake of some shock value today. Stop it, you're wrong.

36. Interesting
What you are not addressing is the "Road that led to the Nazi's control and to Fascism" and how those governments became dictatorships.

It certainly didn't happen overnight or at the snap of someone's fingers. Think of the people who today are making these accusations as the "canaries".

The framework is nearly complete..

The Mask is off…

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre."

Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 06:55 PM by Neil Lisst
And there is always someone who has to wag a finger and give the "but you're diminishing the true horror of the Nazis" speech.

People use it because it has currency.

Why do some people constantly try to force the world to use their personally acceptable lexicon?

If you can't call this president and his crew Nazis, who can you call Nazis except the Nazis?

That's the whole point, the Nazis were on a different level than anything that currently exists in a position of power in America. The comparison is not valid.
