More remains discovered near WTC site
NEW YORK (AP) -- Construction workers cleaning toxic waste from a vacant skyscraper near the World Trade Center site have found more bone fragments and human remains, officials said Tuesday.

The city medical examiner's office plans to extract DNA from the latest remains to be recovered from the former Deutsche Bank building and try to match it against a database of the 2,749 people killed at the trade center on September 11, 2001, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office.

Fire Department crews had inspected the building in the months following the attacks, but construction workers clearing gravel off the rooftop found 10 bone fragments there last fall.

The new remains were found in recent weeks by crews doing a more thorough cleaning before construction workers begin dismantling the building in May, said John Gallagher, spokesman for the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.

Some victims' family members said forensic experts should search the 41-story building again.

4. They're deconstructing the building -- tearing it down

Part of the process is to thoroughly clean it. A really good animation of the process can be seen here: http://www.renewnyc.com/video/05148_Site_File_mpg1.mpg (MPEG movie).

5. the Deutsche Bank building has to be demolished -
it's huge - maybe 60 stories? Damage from the WTC plus it got soaked by fire hoses ---> MOLD damage and the whole building has to come down. It's been vacant and covered in netting since 2001. It's a big black ghost building looming over the pit.

15. It's 40 floors (sometimes stated as 41 - but the top 'floor' is mostly
power backup systems, water, utilities, and other infrastructure, and really spans the space of 2 normal floors).

The topmost 'occupied' floor was 39. I worked on the 38th floor for 8 years, with a cubicle overlooking the harbor, Statue of Libery, Verrazanno Brisge, and Governor's Island. The 39th and 39th floors were mostly Data Center - all computers, raised floowing, cabling, air handlers, and the like, with some offices on the south side of 38.

3. Argh!
If they find the DNA match, what do they do with it? Open of the grave and toss in the bones?

9. No, that looks like Century 21
Those are the buildings across the street to the east of the site. Deutsche Bank is directly south of the WTC.

That was what Century 21 looked like? I can't believe they have it back up and running.

7. I am sure the family members would decide that.
And hopefully they won't just "toss" them in there.

10. A family friend died in Tower 1
Years after 9/11 his parents were contacted when remains were discovered and it felt like he died all over again. In a subliminal irrational sense they were still holding out hope only to be crushed again. There can be nothing but pain for people with these "discoveries". So very sad.

13. My sincerest condolences.
I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to relive that over and over again.

14. Thanks but my pain is but a fraction of others'
This person was the adult child of friends of my parents. He was in my older brother's class, was in boy scouts with him, quarterback of the high school football team and a wave in the hallway for me, but really was just an acquaintance. I only write this because I felt wrong to accept sympathy falsely. But I agree with you of course that the pain from this must be uniquely exquisite for family members. I've experienced loss in my life but at least I don't have to be reminded at random times in such a public way.

I grew up in NJ and my county was affected more than any other in the state on 9/11. It's impossible to be from this area and not know someone personally affected. Just pointless tragedy to reverberate forever.
