Not to be a dead horse, but Pierce Bush's appearance on Today Show
was so fucking funny and horrifying at the same time.

That is one fucked up gene pool that spawned that kid.

I was reading comments about his interview on the Huffington Post, and almost laughed myself stoopid :D

One poster called him "Beavis Bush"

1. He's just a little Nazi.
Seriously screwed up, and I thought very condescending to the interviewer. I had to change channels, I couldn't stand to watch that little shit.

He's legally an adult. Once you get to college you have faculty and administrators who aren't going to correct you on that as much....then again, he's Neil Bush's son, so you're probably seeing how he normally acts.

33. of course he doesn't
as to why he is being interviewed, one can only guess.

the interview tells of him writing a letter to the Pope on another subject, and for some reason, that got NBC's attention.

go figure

32. Don't worry, I know who my detractors are.
Fortunately for me they posted their photos too. ;) :D

I never claimed to be an "arteest." I am a musician and scientist (student), and don't even try to make money from my pix. I do them for my own catharsis and amusement, and do not take myself seriously (unlike the unmentionable ones, who drown in their own testosterone and jealousy). :D

Since I happen to know, for a fact, that folks like Mike Malloy (Mike not only has written me emails, but he has said so on more than one occasion on Air America, mentioning me by name - in fact, he signed onto DU just to tell me that he likes my pix! :) ), Guy James, Ray Taliaferro, Stephanie Miller, Bartcop, and others are fans of my work, I feel satisfied I have reached an audience greater than my expectations. There are many hidden messages in those green pix that have caught the eye of people - when they "get it," I feel immense pleasure. Perhaps changing people into alien lizards is not new (I grew up reading LOTS of sci-fi), but I inject prescient political events and play with concepts like otherness and cannibalism.

I don't expect everyone to understand or even like what I do, but at least I know many lurkers are seeing my pix too. THOSE are the folks that interest me the most, even though I may never know who they are and how it affects them. A few people have told me they signed onto DU just because of my pix, just like I did after seeing so much of Mo Paul's work. ;)

11. Yeah, I've been posting there. His comments on the subject at hand...
... the UAE port deal, were moronic. He tried to accuse opponents of racism. If any anti-Muslim feelings were at play, you have only your uncle to blame for fomenting 5 years of... what's that... oh yeah, anti-Muslim feelings! My feeling is, Bush made his own bed on this one.

And what about what your uncle has done that might have affected the U.S. image abroad? Hmmmnnn?!

But I defended him a bit on the personal attacks. Some got a little harsh. I thought the calls for him to go to Iraq were out of line, since he wasn't even taking about Iraq (although it's likely he supports the war).

He did come off as a dim-witted Beavis type. But if he weren't Bush's nephew, I'd think we all would just think "just what is that kid doing on TV?" or "How foolish and naive I was in my college days."

But I also had a horrific shudder that this could be the Republican nominee for president in 2024.

Ah, the soft bigotry of low expectations at work again.

19. I also bet this was Rove's idea. He was clearly nervous. I think...
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 02:05 PM by Brotherjohn
... he would have preferred to be asleep in bed after what was no doubt the fourth bender of the week (third if he had a big exam). That's not a bash at him. He's just your typical college kid.

But it seemed like, while he may have written a letter or two, he did NOT want to be there on national TV re-iterating his few thoughts.

My guess is someone at the White House got wind of it. Maybe Babs told W "aren't you so PROUD of little Pierce?", Rove saw a clip of the letter on W's desk and thought: "What a great way to gain the support of that desirable 18 to 24 bracket! Lets trot out the 'cute' young nephew!" (I think that's Plan 82-B for failing ratings)

As usual, however, when they try this sort of thing, it bombed miserably.

13. Okay, I watched it twice now...
And while he completely missed the entire point of the ports argument (by several orders of magnitude), his support for the ports deal was in now way a set of Rethug talking points. I gotta give the kid a little credit where it's due, he came off as, well, a nervous 19 year old, zappd to the gills on coffee, who just realized on national TV that the entire reason he was on TV was, first, because of his last name, and second, because his argument for supporting the ports deal was based on a complete misconception of the argument againt the ports deal.

The only RW point he tried to make, and it was a throwaway line was "the UAE is an ally in the war on terror", but every other point he tried to make about supporting the deal from a progressive/left position. He supported the deal because he didn't want the US (and her people) to be perceived as acting like, or being bigots. While the impetus of the argument is flawed, that is support for the ports deal, the point behind it is not and addresses a problem we've had in the US (and abroad) since 1979, which is distrust of Arabs and Muslims for the sole reason that they are Arabs and Muslims.

(in Austin) I'm guessing he had to drive to the Amarillo affiliate to do the uplink, for whatever reason.

He also made a very politician-like comment about the "great people" in Amarillo.

To me, that sounded like code for "minorities" or "blue-collar".

18. Mr. Wonderful and myself had the "privilege" of watching that
particular interview live the morning it ran. When it was all over, we both looked at each and literally burst out laughing.

Of the comments I've read so far on Huffington Post, IMO this one's the best: "

Is he "Dim Son II?" As Gen. Wes Clark would say, "We have a pair of boots and a gun for you."

Why isn't this useless excuse over in Iraq, defending our "freedom"???

29. Let's go easy on "Pierce"
After all, I don't think I would have wanted to be on TV when I was 19, particularly in an outsize ill-fitting suit, opinion on subjects I know nothing about.

The real question is why the "Today" show thought this little pischer's opinion on anything was even remotely newsworthy. Decades from now, I see some media history professor showing this clip as an example of the totally supine character of the mass media during the age of Bush II (aka the Reign of Error and Terror). "Often wrong, but never in doubt, the corrupt Bush administration went so far as to put the nephew of the president on air to discuss a minor controversy in the year before Bush was impeached and removed from office. All the hallmarks of the Bush administration corruption are apparent from the nephew’s untutored manner and poor handling of a situation in which he’s clearly over his head. You can also hear the voice of the doomed Katie Couric, asking the nephew questions. Her legendary sycophancy and the ludicrous claim to be “America’s Sweetheart” before she was torn to pieces by an angry mob early in 2007 are evident as well. Thankfully, this sort of media toadying has long passed out of style, but this tape remains a testament to a very dark time in our nation’s history, and a stark reminder of what we must never allow to happen again.”

He's quoted in an interview as saying:
""Half the reason I wanted to leave Georgetown is that I was kind of burnt out by politics," he said. "Living in Washington for a year and a half, you kind of see what kind of BS it is."

Yeah, Pierce, you're such a rebel.

This is a clear and blatant attempt at gaining some sort of "outsider" cred. Kind of like when W ran for governor of Texas instead of Maine or Connecticut.

In five years, we'll be calling him "State Representative Pierce Bush".
