Today at school
I was sitting in on one of the 5th grade classes I tutor in, and they were learning about early-19th century policies towards Indians, and the teacher was being totally honest about it. Talking about the Trail of Tears and the reasons behind it in totally honest, very critical terms, showing the class what it a quarter of the class dying would have looked like, and getting a shocked reaction from the students. I say good for him. In my opinion, we should teach the ideals the country was founded on first, and then reinforce them while showing how we fell short, so we inspire each generation of kids to reclaim those values and use them.

That was my day, how are y'all?

1. Give that teacher a rose for me. Tell her a veteran teacher educator
thinks he/she is a shining example of getting kids to think about the human costs of the choices that we (the government "we") make. It's enough to restore my faith.

2. Hi nemo
Another benefit of admitting our mistakes is it highlights the administration's inability to admit theirs.

3. I agree. History is written by the victors but when you know other facts
the unvarnished truth side should be taught. Good for him.

4. You mean not telling of the White Man's noble triumph over the
savage Indian? How radical.

:applause: for that teacher.

6. My niece learned the other side of the Thanksgiving story in pre-school
last year. She was 3! It was kind of freaky to have a 3 yr. old tell me about the Indians going on a trail of tears, but it was refreshing (although the story is sad, at least she's learning the truth).
