2. guest workers need not be 'workers without rights'.
We have two moderate sized fruit farms in our town and they both use legal Jamaican guest workers and they both treat their workforce with dignity and respect. Typically these jobs are handed down along generational lines and our local newspaper runs obituaries when one of our longtime guest workers dies. They are part of our community. Workers without rights are illegals - they have no rights and they are the ones who are exploted, who pay taxes and receive no benefits, who fall below the osha radar. Legalize temporary immigrant workers. This takes away the whole 'but they are illegal' canard. It ends the gross exploitation that characterizes the labor relations between illegals and employers. It defuses the racist xenophobic ant-hispanic rightwing hysteria.
