Lieberman says Bush wiretapping 'outside the law'
March 26, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --President Bush's authorization of warrantless wiretapping as part of the war on terrorism was "outside the law," Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday.

Lieberman, D-Conn., also said he opposes a move by a Democratic Senate colleague to censure Bush over accusations that the president unlawfully authorized wiretaps without obtaining court orders.

"As I read the law I think the president's tapping or surveillance without a warrant was wrong," Lieberman said on "Face the State" on WFSB-TV. "It was outside the law."

"This is an important program," said Lieberman, who is seeking a fourth term this year. "I don't find anybody in Congress who thinks we ought not to be listening to the phone conversations and reading the e-mails of people that we think are involved in and we have reason to believe are involved in terrorist groups. But it has to be done in America in my opinion pursuant to the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. It has to be done with a court order."

5. Nah, you notice he's not going to do anything
I think it does no good just to say it's wrong, and then just step aside and let Bush
defy the Constitution, the Congress and the American people. That's why you
gotta go, Joe.

6. No. He's just pissing his pants that there are Dems running against him.
Lieberwimp is feeling the pressure now that he has a Democratic challenger for his Senate seat. He's pulling a temporary "get tough" posture to placate the CT Dems who may not be too happy with his DINO ways. His statement on this matter is PURE POLITICS meant to secure his Senate seat. Nothing more...nothing less.

Lieberwimp is a born and bred DINO. I see no big change or growth of spine.

9. "outside the law"
Most of us call it illegal.
Then again maybe Joe is setting precident. next time I run into trouble with the cops I'll tell them I was just operating "outside the law" and they'll let me go.

10. Notice how he won't outright say the obvious: W BROKE THE LAW
It's a wee bit "outside the law" in his opinion. You know, just a hop, skip, and a jump around the edges for an "important program" that everyone in Congress wants to have anyway.

This is exactly the kind of direct and decisive statement in support of constitutional principles that has brought Democrats the presidency and our current majority in both houses of congress. :eyes:
