How to come here legally...
Edited on Sun Mar-26-06 10:57 AM by ourbluenation
First, get a green card in 1 of 3 ways

1)having your employer sponsor you (you have to be able to do something that no american can do)
2)marry an american
3)enter the DOS lottery for 1 of 55,000 slots from countries with low immigration rates

After you have the green card then you can apply to be a "naturalized" citizen...

Naturalization is an administrative procedure in which a person becomes a U.S. citizen after meeting certain substantive and procedural requirements. These requirements include:

* applicant must be 18 years of age
* applicant must have five years of continuous residence after becoming a lawful permanent resident (after obtaining a Green Card.
* three months of residency in the state or district where the application is filed.
* applicant must have good moral character.
* applicant must be attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
* applicant must have basic English language skills and knowledge of the history and government of the United States of America.

**********
note - my sis (we're american)has a female partner who is british. Option number 2 under Green Card is not available to her. Frustrating to say the least.

on edit - option number 3 is not available either - the UK is not one of the countries allowed to participate.

1. Now, this is where I think our immigration laws need revising.........
.....the law should be somewhat equal for one and all. I can understand lowering the numbers allowed in this country or stiffening the requirements from countries that has enormously high immigration numbers. If we're going to make immigration easy on some and harder on others why would anyone in their right mind make it harder on the English/British??:wtf:

2. w a 4% unemployment rate the illegals are clearly not taking jobs
away from anyone. Can you imagine, on a practical level, if everyone who wanted to come here and work actually did it legally? I don't know...seems that would create problems all on its own.
