I was thinking... that it would be a nice gesture to back Charlie Sheen.
I know I certainly support his position and his opinion and his point of view on bush and 911.

He's merely echoing the sentiments we here at DU have expressed for the past 4.5 years.

I support his right and his ability to tell that viewpoint as far and as wide as he possibly can.

Any particular reason why the fine, fine people here at DU haven't opted to support him publicly? Maybe just no one thought of it yet?

5. Me either. It wouldn't matter what he advocated, past behavior has
put him in "fringe" category. And isn't he the same guy whose latest wife left him, while pregnant, then got back with him, and left him again?

Something isn't right with him, I think.

10. My that sounds just like what the RW says about Clinton. Spot on.
What does any of that have to do with supporting his opinions on Bush? And how does his "past behavior make him less credible? Divorce and patronising a prostitutue would probably place him in the majority rather than "fringe". Sorry . but I have a problem with patronizing moralistic judgements. And BTW, how do you know something "isn't right' with his wife? Just sayin' I don't personally know either of them. And I am just curious as to wether you think his Da's activism ought to be dismissed as well as he is an admitted alcoholic? Does his past behavior discredit him as well????

11. Indeed.
People are entitled to their opinion, but hopefully we can separate people's personal issues from their comments on matters of political import.

DU is the place that sainted Hunter Thompson, (and rightfully so, I might add) for crying out loud. :D

Personal issues are only fair game when the person in question is clearly a hypocrite.

14. Isn't the poster entitled to their opinion?
If they have issues with drug addict/alcoholic/prostitute banging/gambler that's their opinion. You can disagree with that opinion but they don;t have to justify it.

"past behavior make him less credible"

Credibility is mainly founded on past behavior(though positions of authority are a little different) so why wouldn't someone who has demonstrated serious issues with impulse control(durgs, alcohol, whores, gambling) for many years now be less credible? Because he is saying something you already agreed with?

If Charlie Sheen said tomorrow that George Bush was a misunderstood President who was under appreciated, how would his "past behavior" affect your opinion of his credibility then?

15. Hey, reading is fundamental
I did not say something wasn't right with his wife, I said something was not right with him.

And if you think that the 'average' person spends in excess of fifty grand patronizing prostitutes through the good offices of a famous madam, then you hang in different circles than I do. His behavior is not average. Even his soon-to-be ex-wife is expressing concern about his gambling addiction.

So, your high dudgeon aside, I remain unconvinced that he is a credible spokesman to advance any point of view from any political perspective, given his out-of-control lifestyle and personal challenges.

19. I know you didn't say anything was wrong with his wife.
I said it might be possible she is the one with the problem. We don't know either way. So yes , reading is fundamental! And you miss my point. He is just a wealthier version of many average people. Most people aren't saints and have some vices. His are just larger than life. And I still say "big deal". Just as his father's alcolisim doesn't effect his credibility , neither do Charlie's past behaviors. JMHO And I don't think a gossip rag (the STAR is referenced in the article) is sufficient to base any opinion of what his wife is thinking. But hey, I don't know these people and I wouldn't be that quick to judge them, or presume I know about them. That is all.

23. Most average people do not have his issues
He has lots of addictions, and can't seem to go for long without getting in the papers for some difficulty or another. That isn't "average."

I personally think that the excessive touting of his "opinion" on this matter is a RW effort. They know he has "issues," and they are trying to discredit the viewpoint he is expressing by attaching it to a poster boy with a dubious reputation.

It plays well with their base.

25. Not to belabor a point but most average people do have some vices. He just
has had more than most but than he has more money fame and opportunity than most. And that does nothing to effect his "credibility" to speak out as a citizen. I think expressing chagrin at his speaking out on relevant issues is another example of our "eating our own' and whatever you may think of his past exploits, Charlie Sheen is one of our own. He comes from a family with a long history of activism who have probably done more than most on this board to benefit the average American.I applaud the efforst of the Sheen family and I could give a flying you know what about the RW base. They are NEVER going to vote for us anyway. NEVER. We may stand a chance with the moderates and independents and most of those could care less about the opinion of an actor, except to maybe be impressed with his celebrity.

26. We'll have to agree to disagree
I think he is a study in excess. And of course he has the RIGHT to speak, but I'd listen to a Rob Reiner, for example, more seriously than him.

He's a gift to the GOP....all of his problems--and they are significant and ongoing--DISTRACT from any issues he might raise. You may not think so, but Joe and Jane Sixpack do. And perception, in a continuous 24 hour newsloop environment, is reality.

Surely we can find someone better than him as a spokesperson?

17. But that confuses character issues with whether he's right or not.
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 01:00 PM by BullGooseLoony
I'm not sure that he *is* right- that's my issue. I'm not a MIHOP person (although I'm open). LIHOP, though, is entirely possible, in my mind.

In any case, his marital issues just don't have anything to do with this. We're falling right into the Repuke trap by allowing that to become the issue.

20. Sheen is not a whistleblower, so he has no credibility as a whistleblower
But he does voice concerns that many people have regarding 9-11.

There's this poll on CNN that shows 84% support for Sheen's statements.

16. Remember all the speculation about "the family jewels" that was
alleged to have been held by various law enforcement and intelligence organizations involved in illegal domestic surveillance for decades-well there really isn't any need to speculate.

The whole world has been thrust into the use of once closely held material by the BFEE.

Mr. Sheen and a lot of other "entertainment" figures know a few things about the levels of corruption used historically to create the family jewels.

It's another part of strategic influence imo.

24. Count me in, please.
While I don't agree with everything I've read Sheen said, I do agree with his right as an American to say and ask them.

radwriter0555, you and most of the long-time DUers have been with Sheen since way back.

What sealed the deal for most of thinking America not on DU was the August 6 PDB: "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the U.S." The drunken traitor didn't warn the flying public and stayed safe and sound and cutting brush in 104-degree heat on vacation.
