Dumbya to the troops in Iraq: You have been abandoned.
From the deep-fat fryer known as the press conference:

Q. Will there come a day -- and I'm not asking you when, not asking for a timetable -- will there come a day when there will be no more American forces in Iraq?

THE PRESIDENT: That, of course, is an objective, and that will be decided by future Presidents and future governments of Iraq.

There's every possibility they'll be stuck there until the NEXT president is in office (January 2009) and beyond. With this lot of cuckoo-bananas in charge.........

1. Also to those thinking of joining up: You WILL be sent to Iraq.
No matter what the recruiters tell you - if it ain't Afghanistan, you'll go to Iraq.

Period.

2. Visiting with my friend who is a youngster, I could be her grand dad
and then the crawford coward* came on the tele and I said something about the blivet and she said he looks like he could give two shits about the men and women in Iraq and that he should be removed from office ASAP.

3. I think your friend is right - he doesn't give a rat's ass
the troops in Iraq - what he thought would be an easy victory has degenerated into a quagmire and he doesn't know what to do. They're not real people to him. Has anyone close to him or his staff been killed there ?? I don't know for sure, but I doubt it.

7. We're not real people too him. We disgust him, truth be told.
Too bad we can't have him experience a "Lonesome Rhodes" moment so those who are still under his spell, can hear what he REALLY thinks of us "common" people. He sort of had one with that "haves and have more" remark, but the media didn't help out with that. More important to play the "Dean scream" 6000 times. :eyes:

9. Well I for one thank you for your service
and I'm glad you've retained a sense of the ridiculous.

I truly believe this will drag on for several more years - short of a draft, the same people will be recycled. My intention was not to belittle or denigrate serving one's country, but the cause HAS to be just - Afghanistan is, but Iraq is not.

Sometimes I just despair.......

10. At least until 20 Jan 2009!
I feel great sorrow at the holes to the families and the lives of those killed and those who survive duty in Iraq will do...

And being the big older brother type (since I enlisted far too late to be indoctrinated) I had to be chief cynic and rabble rouser for my the guys under my authority!

As far as belittling country's, I for one am all for it! Pointing out the truth of the situation is far better than swallowing the lunacy of jingoism. But you are right the same guys will get recycled. I did 1 tour in Afghanistan and 2 in Iraq. My guys who are still in are working on their 3rd fucking tour in Iraq!

It's why I pointed out in this thread the terrible strain being experienced by the guys

11. That thread about says it all
the young people joining up have no idea what they're getting into, particularly if they don't have high education qualifications - just cannon fodder.

I watch the Newshour (it's rebroadcast here hours after it's shown in the US) and sometimes they show the pictures and brief details of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan - it's the 19- and 20-year-olds that get to me - their lives have hardly begun.

Three tours of Iraq, with no end in sight - I just weep for them, and pray.
