Wal-Mart Targeting Upscale Shoppers
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 2:52 AM EST
The Associated Press
By DAVID KOENIG

PLANO, Texas (AP) — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has overcome its rural roots and downscale image to attract affluent shoppers, but executives admit that many of those well-heeled consumers come only for cheap groceries and steer clear of the other merchandise.

In its boldest effort yet to target upscale shoppers, the nation's largest retailer is opening a new store this week with an expanded selection of high-end electronics, more fine jewelry, hundreds of types of wine ranging up to $500 a bottle, and even a sushi bar.

Wal-Mart says it won't duplicate this format anywhere else. But if plasma TVs, microbrewery beer and fancy balsamic vinegar sell in Plano, those items could be added to stores in other affluent communities.

1. Wealthy People Do Not Shop In Shit-Mart This Is A Gimmick To Get
Middle class folks to feel "wealthy" and spend more than they have the means to spend. Debt entrapment. Hey there's an idea the Shit-Mart credit card! (Please DO NOT tell me they already offer credit cards...PLEASE.)

12. I believe
that Sam's does offer a credit card. And the Walton family owns a bank group which offers credit cards.

6. Good lord...
How many Walmart shoppers would eat sushi? Use it for bait, maybe...but eat it? I think not!

13. Hell, even leaving Walmart out of the equation, how many Plano, Texans

15. Quite a few, I bet.
One thing the wealthy residents of Plano love to do is go out to eat. It's true there are lots of upscale steakhouses in the area, but there are also quite a few nice Japanese restaurants. I don't understand why anyone would go to Wal-Mart to buy that kind of stuff when you could go to Costco, Whole Foods Market, or even an Asian market. I know I won't ever set foot in that store.

8. Cuz we just don't have enough Walmarts in this town....
<same article>

"This customer is telling us they're not doing it themselves," said Ryan Lincks, the store's project manager. "They don't change their own oil."

No shit, Sherlock, this is **Plano**...we have a certain group of people in part of this town that won't even change their own kid's diaper--not kidding..I work in a NICU and had a father tell us that his (stay at home) wife didn't need to learn how to change diapers, the nanny would be doing that. And if I remember correctly, this is the WalMart store that caved in to the neighborhood when the locals complained about the color of the brick that the store would be using when it got built..Walmart had to change the brick color just to be allowed to build the store.
So I am thinking it ain't gonna be these affluent people "shopping" in this WalMart..they will be too busy at their country clubs and golf courses.

10. Larry the Cable Guy would wonder
why the bait was moved from the sporting goods to the food section . . .

(for those who don't realize it, he's the biggest RED faction of the "Blue Collar Comedy" group, and he uses the most potty jokes . . .)

11. Just caught a commercial for the new "Larry" movie coming out...
...if those are the best and funniest scenes, the rest of the movies's gonna be a real pile.

Ayup.

14. There was a RW apologist in a local Akron weekly
(Thank God they cut him out . . . but they also cut out the left side, too, and they're both carried by the general chain - the Plain Dealer-controlled Sun newspapers)

who was sarcastically lamenting the dearth of interesting films coming out of Hollywood . . . said the "closest" he saw to a "new idea" from Hollywood was "Team America, World Police" (which, I'm sure, he endorsed because they killed off Michael Moore and "Hollywood Liberals") . . .

(tends to forget that Hollywood actually is quite conservative . . . it knows that intelligent films don't promote well, but potty humor does - witness the comparison of "Big Fat Liar" vs. the Brits' "Harry Potter" films)

So, I wonder if this "metrosexual" (should have seen his picture . . . of course, for the lefty, they used a picture that looks like the "pimply-faced" 9th-grade class picture right after gym class) would be praising this movie as hilarious . . .

16. I can really only take Ron White out of that group. It was kind of
nice to see him go off on homophobes after watching Larry diss the Dixie Chicks etc.
