ILLINOIS: Cegelis vs. Duckworth steel cage death match!!
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 11:04 PM by derby378
Damn! This race is close! As of 9:49PM CST, in the race for US Congress, Illinois 6th District, it's Tammy Duckworth with 41% and Christine Cegelis with 40%:

http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/

That's with only 17% of precincts reporting. I think both camps are in for a long and bruising night - brew another pot of coffee, folks!

NOTE: Edited slightly for clarity.

4. Good
While I don't hate Duckworth (she would be a very good candidate) I don't like how the DCCC APPROACHED having her get into the race against Cegelis. I want the race to be close so Duckworth has to reach out to Cegelis supporters (although I hope that we don't enter recount territory, because then the conflict between the two camps will be much worse than it is now.)

5. This is such an important bell-weather in terms of letting the "inside the
beltway" dems. know that the progressive grassroots mean business and must be taken seriously. Cegelis earned this spot last time around and the DLC should not be appointing their own candidates "from above"!

8. It's not just the DLC, it's folks like Durbin also
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 11:25 PM by Tom Rinaldo
I think the correct catch all term here is "Party leaders". I am sympathetic to Cegelis, I donated money to her campaign, though I think Duckworth would probably be a good candidate also. I would have preferred a more hands off approach from Party leaders in this district.

11. OK, since the votes have all been cast...
Who else is willing to pledge a donation to whichever Democrat emerges from this primary with the nomination? I will make a donation to whoever wins. We really need this seat. We need Conyers to become Chair of the Judiciary Committee for one thing. The battle for control of our Party needs to continue no matter what the results of this race are, but the battle for control of Congress needs to continue also.

Since Cegelis was the nominee last time, why are they backing someone else this time? Or did Scott try for the nomination last time also? Of course the fact that they chose Scott over Cegelis doesn't mean that they would want Duckworth over Cegelis . I'm just surpised to see three candidates pulling over 15% in this race.

House seat in November. Please, no dumping opposition research into the media.

Whether Christine wins or not, this is extremely impressive since she had essentially the entire IL Democratic delegation supporting her opponent.

Do you think she should? I'm sure, she can raise money quick.

66. Go Duckworth!
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 12:41 AM by Clarkie1
That said, I support whoever wins!

Let's support these folks, too!

Nine Iraq Vets Running for Congress
Duckworth is one of nine Iraq veterans running for Congress this year. Most of them are like Duckworth — Democrat and anti-war, as is Capt. Patrick Murphy, Ret., who served seven months in Iraq.

"I wouldn't have wrote a blank check to the president," said Murphy, who is campaigning to represent Pennsylvania's eighth district in Congress. "I would have made sure that the intelligence was accurate and wasn't a slam dunk like some people in this administration said it was."

73. Enought of the negative thinking. Duckworth is a fine candidate.
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 01:12 AM by Clarkie1
She deserves this. She earned it the hard way.

She will make a fantastic representive in the new congress for the people of her district.

75. I don't understand your logic. 44% is not enough to win.
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 01:16 AM by Clarkie1
Edit:

In any case, past performance is no guarantee of future results and the people of Illinois are not going to deny a progressive Iraq war vet with a purple heart a chance to serve.

Both candidates were and are good Democrats. Now it's time to win in November.

She could have had a good chance at winning the open seat this year

81. she got less votes than Kerry did in that district
based on that alone, the party structure wasn't going to back her for a second try. I'm sure it wasn't personal.

In this case, there may or may not have been other factors that would compensate, but many experienced "politicos" aren't going to look any farther than that one fact. Maybe they should have, but they won't. That's just politics.

85. Tammy Duckworth won this election.
Not the experienced "politicos."

I think it's important to remember she is the people's choice.

87. The time is past to argue over who was the better candidate
No matter who comes out on top of the initial vote count, all that is still left to argue about in this race is how the votes are counted. We need to keep working to make the candidate selection process in the Democratic Party responsive to district voters, but we also have to take this seat in November with whoever emerges with the nomination. Before the votes were cast it made sense to argue about whether Cegelis or Duckworth was a more deserving candidate, but tearing down either of these women now does us no good.

88. then maybe you should stop kicking the thread
sorry to be snippy, but you are the second poster to have scolded me for posting a simple fact (and posting it last night, mind you).

Go scold somebody who is actually complaining about party leaders supporting Duckworth over Cegelis, instead of me, who is explaining why that was the case. There are plenty of people still upset that Cegelis didn't get much support from elected Democrats in Illinois and elsewhere after getting 44% last time. I'm saying that it wasn't personal, it wasn't purposely ignoring the base as a power play -- it was simply that they didn't think 44% was very good, given Kerry's performance in the district.

72. 12 Midnight Update: 78.52%
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 01:07 AM by KharmaTrain
Duckworth , Tammy Dem 10,984 43.19
Cegelis , Christine Dem 10,389 40.85
Scott , Lindy Dem 4,061 15.97

The lead's widened over the past hour...and getting late. A big chin-up to the Cegalis folks...the went far longer and later than the powers that be had expected.

Cheers...

On Edit: 413 out of 526 precincts reporting. Local media is focused on the Cook County President race where only 44% of the vote has been counted so far...i'm wondering if the hang-up is in Cook County and this is affecting the 6th Congressional vote count. Any info???

Edit: I can't wait for those joint Duckworth rallys with General Clark! The neo-cons in Illinois ought to be afraid...very afraid.

86. I'm Ready To Support ALL Democrats
Especially in areas that currently have (R)s sitting in them. The 6th is an excellent chance for a pick-up and puts Democrats right at Hastert's doorstep.

While I'm gonna give the checkbook a rest...looks like it's gonna get quite a workout this fall, and hopefully for some very positive results!

Cheers...

78. Only a small part of the district is in Cook,
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 01:19 AM by tritsofme
and Duckworth is dominating it. DuPage is nearly done counting.
DEM - REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS - 6TH
79/127 62.20%

Christine Cegelis 1578 37.50%
Lindy Scott 538 12.79%
L. Tammy Duckworth 2092 49.71%

The race for Cook President, there is still 40% left to be counted, and because of the nonexistant Cook County GOP, this primary is the de facto election.

DEM - PRESIDENT OF COUNTY BOARD
1449/2386 60.73%

Forrest Claypool 78199 62.49%
John H. Stroger, Jr. 46940 37.51%

The Stroger camp claims that many of the uncounted ballots are from the inner city, and would favor him.
