Church that celebrates soldiers' deaths to picket Maine funeral

NORWAY, Maine --A church that has placed pickets outside funerals of U.S. soldiers plans to be in Maine as Army Sgt. Corey Dan is laid to rest on Saturday.

A church representative told the Sun Journal newspaper of Lewiston that church members will be carrying signs proclaiming "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags." The church says soldiers are being struck down by God for defending a nation that tolerates homosexuality.

The antics of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church have led to legislative efforts in Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Kentucky and other states to either stop the disruption of military funerals or to keep the protesters away from grieving families.

Dan, a member of the 101st Airborne Division from Norway, was killed in Iraq on March 13 when his Humvee was attacked with a roadside bomb and small arms fire. He died without ever seeing his son, who was born on the same day that he departed in December for his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Help! Isn't there a group that has been counter-protesting these fuckwads? How do you get in touch with them?

Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a "hawk" or a "dove". It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is. You don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives.

1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.

2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directly above is the Patriot Guard Riders’ Mission Statement.

Please read it. If you don’t agree with it, please don’t join. If you’re looking for a group that protests, counter-protests or confronts any organization, you’re in the wrong place.

The PGR is not a protest group.

2. fred phelps has the balls to be a "conservative"
in public. He is a spokesman for the republican party. He represents robertson and falwell and dobson, and yet they distance themselves from this guy because it might not be totally politically correct. This ties in nicely with the story about whiny little kids growing up to be close minded hypocritical batards.

Actually, there would be a nasty little disturbance if I were at any of the funerals fred and his evil bastards showed up at.

8. Umm, actually he is a registered Democrat
and used to have close ties to the Gore family, until they had a falling out.

Policical views aside, he is just vile, crazy, and deranged.

5. The largest counter protest was a vietnam vet motorcycle gang...
I think that was in Montana.

That church is sick man, really sick. I think they have a site called godhatesfags.com

I think they're just one big homophobic family. What they're doing to their own children by pumping them with this hatred is really sad, let alone their crazy antics at veteran's funerals.

10. You'd think with all the Baptists church-burnings these days...
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 03:17 PM by mark11727
...SOMEBODY would've eventually gotten around to Westboro Baptist by now.

And, NO I'm NOT condoning church-burning, but seriously, Rev Phelps is one sick motherf*cker.
