Bush Falsely Claims He Never Linked Hussein To September 11

Bush, this afternoon:

First, just if I might correct a misperception, I don’t think we ever said – at least I know I didn’t say that there was a direct connection between September the 11th and Saddam Hussein.

In fact, Bush justified the war against Iraq by directly linking it to 9/11:

The use of armed forces against Iraq is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations or person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. (Bush’s Letter to Congress, 3/21/03)

And he never met jack abramoff
and he doesn't remember deserting his military unit (because he was on drugs.) And he really didn't profit from insider trading at harken. And soon we will hear that he never said Iraq had wmd. But he can count on the insane base to lap it up.

1. It's called parallel association or intercalation...he's lying
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 02:13 PM by autorank
You talk about two people, unrelated, in close association; over and over. Pretty soon, those
not paying real attention or intellectually lazy, make the association themselves:

911 bad; Hussein bad; 911 bad; Hussein bad=>"hey, that Hussein fella had something to do with 911!!!

It's tired and deceiving but it works quite well with a "cool medium" like television. If you do this in print, it's a bit too obvious.

Intercalation is a rhetorical technique used in older texts, like the New Testament. This technique has the speaker, writer begin a story about one topic, interrupt it, and insert a key point; then resume the original topic. This is very powerful. I'm sure they're doing it. Or maybe not, it's a bit literary and actually more honest.

This administration is vile and disgusting. Nothing is to low for them, no lie to big, no act of violence too grotesque...afterall they're pursuing their profits and pipe dreams while the world enters or passes (wow) the "tipping point" for irreversible global warming.

48. I'm glad to know the terms. But it's not the listener's fault THIS time.
I would add that people don't make the connection because they are intellectually lazy, but because they actually trust the speaker. Everybody assumes that there's a REASON why the president keeps putting nine eleven and Saddam in the same sentence. Or begins a paragraph with "an awful day", continues with "must prevent it from happening again" and ends with "stopping Saddam." It can't be just happenstance. The guy has professional speechwriters, after all.

In fact, the problem is that people trust the president to not come back three years later and say, "parse what I said exactly" and blame the 72% or whatever that actually believed Saddam had a connection with 9/11 like they dreamed it up all by themselves. Add to that the WH knew full well the stories that Dicky Cheney, Fox, Rush and all the other assholes were building (without a single objection about their inaccuracies) and you can see the problem is a president who wants to lie and get away with it. People trusted the president to tell the truth, not a half truth, not a false implication. They fucked up. They trusted him.

53. WaPo used the term enthymematic argumentation to describe it.
We were attacked by bad men. Saddam is a bad man.

He also morphed Osama into Saddam. He talked a lot about Osama until Sept 2002 and then suddenly started talking about Saddam and didn't mention Osama at all if he could get away with it. It was a lot like the book 1984 where the country is always at war and sometimes the friendly country becomes the enemy and the enemy becomes an ally. I expected Osama to show up at a picnic in Crawford, suddenly an ally against terrorism.

An elected offical telling bald-faced absurd lies, or a media that doesn't call him out and cry "bullshit"?

I listened to twenty mintes of soundbites on NPR this morning, all of Bush or Cheney or Rice banging the war drums and connecting Iraq and 9/11. All on tape, all notated, all well-documented.

9. Here's what I don't get
They continue to deny this, despite the evidence to the contrary. I get that part. But, here's the part I don't get:

As noted here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x692769#703895

This news has been making its rounds:

Saddam's al-Qa'ida link 'revealed'
20 March 2006
DOCUMENTS seized in Iraq immediately after the US invasion in 2003 point to the presence of al-Qa'ida members in the country before the war, and show there had been moves to hide traces of "chemical or biological materials" from UN weapons inspectors.

The documents have been posted on the internet as part of a rolling program by the US Government to make public the contents of 48,000 boxes of untranslated papers and tapes relating to the workings of Saddam Hussein's regime. Saddam is said to have routinely taped talks with cabinet members and intelligence chiefs.

US director of national intelligence John Negroponte was ordered by President George W. Bush to release the material. Hundreds of thousands of previously unseen documents and hundreds of hours of tapes will be placed on the web in the coming weeks.

The first documents to be released offer tantalising clues to possible Iraqi contacts with al-Qa'ida. An Iraqi intelligence report dated September 15, 2001 -- four days after the attacks on the US -- says Osama bin Laden and the Taliban were in contact with Iraq, and al-Qa'ida members had visited the country.

It claims the US had proof that the Iraqi government and "bin Laden's group" had agreed to co-operate to attack targets in the US and that the Americans might strike Iraq and Afghanistan in retaliation.

However, the information comes from an unidentified Afghan informant who states merely that he heard it from an Afghan consul, also unnamed. According to ABC News, which translated the tapes, the claims are "sensational" but the sourcing is "questionable".

Another document from a "trustworthy" source and dated August 2002 claims people with links to al-Qa'ida were in Iraq. There is a picture a few pages later of the Jordanian terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. But the papers suggest Saddam's agents were trying to verify the presence of al-Qa'ida rather than colluding with it.

And as I pointed out in the link above, this part was suspect:

The documents have been posted on the internet as part of a rolling program by the US Government to make public the contents of 48,000 boxes of untranslated papers and tapes relating to the workings of Saddam Hussein's regime. Saddam is said to have routinely taped talks with cabinet members and intelligence chiefs.

US director of national intelligence John Negroponte was ordered by President George W. Bush to release the material. Hundreds of thousands of previously unseen documents and hundreds of hours of tapes will be placed on the web in the coming weeks.

So, if this is a new Government program Bush is rolling out that's supposed to support their initial claims, why does he continue to deny these things?

Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 02:47 PM by Imagine My Surprise
Bush would deny that he'd said things which he'd said five minutes earlier in front of the whole class. If anyone could re-post that interview, it would certainly indicate that his pathological lying is not anything new with him. The instructor also said that when others would call him on this, he would try to find ways to hurt them out of class. Such a mama's boy wimp ass bully. Why hasn't someone stomped his face?

43. some of Prof. Tsurumi's observations
Good point, re: the lying! Being a college instructor myself, and working with many of them ... I know that a student would have to be absolutely horrible, in order to be remembered like that after so many years! I've taught hundreds of students over more than a decade, and I can only think of a couple who had that kind of reputation among the other faculty (and their classmates as well). Personally I do not have enough room in my brain to remember minor issues, after a couple of semesters ... and the majority of profs tend to give students the benefit of the doubt, if they say/do something inept or inappropriate (since after all everyone is there to gain more knowledge, and isn't expect to be absolutely perfect!).

http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/091704I.shtml

""He showed pathological lying habits and was in denial when challenged on his prejudices and biases. He would even deny saying something he just said 30 seconds ago. He was famous for that. Students jumped on him; I challenged him." When asked to explain a particular comment, said Tsurumi, Bush would respond, "Oh, I never said that.""

*here's something else I found rather unsettling, Imagine My Surprise -- Bush's habit of dissing other people behind their backs, trying to get them into trouble.

""Students who challenged and embarrassed Bush in class would then become the subject of a whispering campaign by him, Tsurumi said. "In class, he couldn't challenge them. But after class, he sometimes came up to me in the hallway and started bad-mouthing those students who had challenged him. He would complain that someone was drinking too much. It was innuendo and lies. So that's how I knew, behind his smile and his smirk, that he was a very insecure, cunning and vengeful guy.""

38. What crap! Of course he did!
But he did it by making sure 9/11 and Iraq were very close to each other in speeches, preferably in the next sentence.

You don't have to say "Saddam conspired with Osama" You just have to say "On 9/11, we were attacked. We can't wait for terror to come here. We had to remove Saddam, blah blah blah."

He KNEW people inferred from that a connection between 9/11 and Iraq. He did nothing to disabuse them of that idea. Even if he never said Saddam was responsible for 9/11, he deliberately spoke in a way that made it seem as though he was saying it and never corrected the misimpression. It was, at the very least, a lie of omission.

Add passive-aggressive to his many slimy characteristics.

39. Even if it's technically true...
wouldn't the Pubs have to admit that at the very least, that parsing of language is, er, "Clintonian", to use one of their terms?

40. I remember hearing him say this on TV.
When asked if their was a connection between Saddam and Osama he said that there was a relationship. When asked to clarify he replied in his moronic way that a relationship is a relationship. He often mentions 911,terrorists, Iraq &/or Saddam in the same sentence not quite making a direct link yet implying a link. People did not come up with the idea all on their own. The Bush Regime planted the idea hundreds of times.

42. Results from one simple search here at DU...
Bush sent a letter to Congress on 3/19/03 saying that the Iraq war was permitted specifically under legislation that authorized force against "nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001."

In my search I've found that he has done a fine job of dancing around the subject, whenever he was questioned directly about any solid connection. Both Powell & Rumsfeld have records of more definite statements connecting Hussein with 9/11, but still not precisely stating there is a connection. Cheney I'm still searching on. Wolfowitz & Perle were the actual mouthpieces, conveniently far enough from the prez for him to claim that HE never said such a thing.

Anyone who thinks this administration is not conniving & highly competent in achieving their desired ends should attempt to nail down an actual quote on this subject. They are all cunning like foxes & orchestrated this illegal war like the predators they are!

44. Shrub is an incompetent blabbering fool and a Sock Puppet.
His Cabal is clever with spinning anything to the gullible public.

The invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq are a success even though they appear to be failures. Yes, they are failures for the less than rich in both of those countries and the USA but not for ruling elites.

"The terrorists want to control the oil. Our way of life will be at risk". George W. Bush (Nov. 2005)

Bush Regime Iraq Successes (Phase 1)

1. Saddam will no longer sell Iraqi oil via the Euro.

2, A military foothold in the ME. Other than Saudi Arabia.

3, No countries will be able to buy Iraqi oil that the U.S. disapproves of.

4. Slowing production of Iraqi oil garners more profits to US Oil Corps.

5.The Military Industrial Complex is a booming Industry.

Iraq: Permanent US Colony

"Why does the Bush Administration refuse to discuss withdrawing occupation forces from Iraq? Why is Halliburton, who landed the no-bid contracts to construct and maintain US military bases in Iraq, posting higher profits than ever before in its 86-year history?
Why do these bases in Iraq resemble self-contained cities as much as military outposts?"

46. okay, Shrub.
Let's say you're telling the truth for once & that you never connected Hussein with 9/11.

So what's your sorry-ass excuse not to pull out the troops immediately?

50. Bush had to write that official letter to Congress as per the IWR - lying
in an official document is an IMPEACHABLE offense. I always believed that congress should impeach Bush for his violations of the IWR which includes LYING in his official letter to Congress.

You know, just when you think you've heard it all. How much longer are they going to be allowed to continue to represent us? And last Thursday, again he & his Repub congress-critters tried to sneak pass another privatization of Social Security!

What king of President takes the country down for barely a count, hurts our elderly, disabled, military, the poorest, weakest among us, and the middle-class whether they've noticed or not and I think they have - what does it take to get rid of this bunch before they destroy us past repair?

I'm so embarrassed that he represents me it makes me literally sick.

Edit: Second paragraph above. The word "king" was suppose to read "kind." Just sayin'

52. The guy who asked the question really put him on the spot as you
can tell from the look on Bush's face. He was an older man, with a rich voice, confident, direct and well spoken - everything Bush isn't. Haven't seen that look since Corretta Scott King's Funeral.
Bush said: "I never said Saddam Hussein ordered the attack"
