Bush to Acknowlege Mistakes, Tout Success in Iraq

White House Tries to Reiterate Case for the War as Anniversary Nears
Analysis
By JOHN COCHRAN

March 17, 2006 — - The White House knows the news media pays a lot of attention to anniversaries, and the third anniversary of the start of the Iraq War is no exception.

President Bush's aides also know some of that coverage, maybe a lot of it, will be negative. So, the White House has its own public relations offensive under way. First up is Bush's radio address on Saturday, then a speech to a nonpartisan group in Cleveland on Monday, the day after the anniversary. Another speech will follow on Wednesday. None of this effort may do the president any good in the polls, but as one adviser put it: "You gotta do something. You can't just sit there and let your opponents dominate news coverage of the war."

Several Republicans in Congress have complained recently that the Bush White House is tone deaf on a number of important political issues. But on the issue of Iraq, even Bush critics admit the president "gets it."

Pictures vs. Words

Time and again Bush has tried to persuade Americans that the war is not only winnable but also worth the costs of victory. The public, though, has been more impressed by what it sees on television. Republican pollsters say that until there is better news from Iraq, Bush's speeches may have little impact. In other words, they say, the old cliché is true: Aa picture is worth a 1,000 words, or maybe much more than that.

3. LMAO! He doesn't admit mistakes, EVER!
More "catapulting the propaganda"? Please! And just what is the definition of "success" according to the bush maladministration? Because Iraq looks to be in a civil war. And since when has his opponents "dominated" the coverage of the war? Holy crap! They are reaching.

4. On the issue of Iraq, Bush critics admit he "gets it"?
Woah. Not very aware repugs, judging from the polls. It's mind-boggling to think anyone believes he 'gets it'. Don't they see his blood-soaked hands?
And I just can't wait to hear the blivet's speech acknowledging mistakes since he never makes any.
I trust it will be full of the same kind of vapid promises he made post-Katrina.

Iran's training, funding and support for Shiite militias in Iraq is often cited as a factor in Iraq's rising sectarian strife, but Mr Larijani said: "I think Iraq is a good testing ground for America to take a harder look at the way it acts. If there's a determination in America to take that hard look, then we're prepared to help."

Iran is telling someone and some party in DC that they are asshats, I would say.

8. Yep
He's gonna have some good ol' fashioned speechifying about the good news that wasn't reported, what went right, and then, right before the speech ends he's gonna mention what "didn't go so good".

Oy. See: Mission is Accomplished (again)!

9. The first salvo was the bogus mission yesterday.
It was no surprise that no military was hurt and they captured 10,000 or so insurgents and tons of weapons. Oh, and it was no surprise that the spokesman said that this is the way it's going to be from now on.
