St. Patty's parade chair: Gays like Nazis, KKK, prostitutes
Parade Chairman Makes Anti-Gay Remarks By AMY WESTFELDT, Associated Press Writer
10 minutes ago

NEW YORK - The chairman of the nation's biggest St. Patrick's Day Parade marched Friday while sidestepping questions about remarks comparing gay Irish-American activists to neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and prostitutes.

"Today is St. Patrick's Day. We celebrate our faith and heritage. Everything else is secondary," said the chairman, John Dunleavy, who wore a sash of the Irish colors.

Dunleavy was blasted by the City Council's first openly gay leader for the remarks, which appeared in The Irish Times on Thursday.

He told the newspaper, "If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow Neo-Nazis into their parade? If African Americans are marching in Harlem, do they have to let the Ku Klux Klan into their parade?"

About the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization, Dunleavy said, "People have rights. If we let the ILGO in, is it the Irish Prostitute Association next?"

3. I refuse to attend.
I am gay and Irish and quite frankly incensed at his comparisons. I could walk through the park to the east side right now and watch the parade but my conscience has prevented me from doing so.

5. The sonofabitch should change his name to Dumbleavy
Wow, talk about smearing an entire culture with the remarks of a bigoted "chairman." I imagine some folks wouldn't have any problem crowning that dipshit with a chair.

May the road rise to meet him (in his FACE)

May the (BREAKING) wind be always up his nose!!

Shouldn't they have a day too to honor their patriotism?

15. As someone who has lived most of my life in the neighborhood where...
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 01:19 PM by Crankie Avalon
...the parade ends, I respectfully say that this very parade itself is an embarrassment and an imposition. Going home in the evening on clogged streets where one has to negotiate around the stumblings of legions of drunken and therefore frequently truculent boors is not something to which I am looking forward today.

It's ironic that this "chairman" sees fit to snub a group that would really only "class up" his shabby, impossible-to-make-any-worse event.

17. If I was organising it, YES.
Any organisation that is Irish and proud of it and not there to do or promote harm should be welcome.

19. What an asshole!
Sorry about this guy.... I hate to think that someone like this is allowed to run anything never mind something supposedly Irish!!

:evilfrown:

Is this the attitude in all American St Pats parades or just NY?? I think Danny LaRue led the Dublin parade a few years ago.

20. What organization is in charge of the parade in New York?
Check this out, they wouldn't even let this organization march today down Fifth Avenue:

"Also barred from the parade was the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, which lobbies on behalf of undocumented Irish immigrants in the United States."

Mr. Dunleavy, you are a total and complete gobshite....
