OMG! LOOK at this F***KING AP Headline! *Warning Graphic Photo*

"Iraqis SAY 11 People Killed in U.S. Raid "!!!

wtf?? Iraqis Say??? Is the AP implying the US may not have slaughtered this family and the Iraqis MURDERED them?? :grr:
US Forces ADMIT THEY DID IT!!!!

ISAHAQI, Iraq - U.S. forces flattened a house during a raid north of Baghdad early Wednesday, killing 11 people — mostly women and children, while insurgent attacks elsewhere left five dead, police and relatives said.

The U.S. military acknowledged the raid and said it caught one insurgent. It took place near Balad, about 50 miles north of the capital. But the military said only four people were killed — a man, two women and a child.

... but they JUST killed four! :cry:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060315/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_violence

Relatives mourn near the bodies of children, reportedly killed in a U.S. raid, as they arrive in a hospital in Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, Iraq, Wednesday, March 15,2006. Eleven people, most of them women and children were killed when a house was bombed during a U.S. raid north of Baghdad early Wednesday, police and relatives said. The U.S. military acknowledged four deaths in the raid that they said netted an insurgent suspect in the rural Isahaqi area, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the capital. The U.S. military acknowledged four deaths in the raid that they said netted an insurgent suspect

They failed to mention whether the 4 dead were insurgents or civilians. But they did mention the one they "netted" was an insurgent suspect. To me that implies that the people killed were civilians.

So, by the Pentagon's own count, we killed 4 innocents to get one suspect. Fucking mind-boggling.

19. It's called 'sourcing'
Newspapers never say — or definitely shouldn't — that someone did something; they cite others as saying it happened.

The vast majority of times, no reporter saw what happened in the story he or she is writing. They hear of what happened and get the information from "official" sources. Even if a reporter does see something, it's incumbent upon them to ask a source for an official version of what happened. Otherwise, it's the reporter's interpretation, and that's not what news is supposed to be.

Read any crime story in any newspaper. You'll repeatedly see "police said" or something very close to it. Yet the accused, or more often their families, still call the reporter or an editor and yell, "You guys said I did this!" No, the police said you did it. The newspaper reported what the police said.

48. The problem with 'sourcing' is when journalists refuse to use
their 'reportorial authority' in the piece.

As in scientists say that evolution..., while religious leaders say that intelligent design...
Some scientists say global warming is real..., while others say that it is fantasy.

In a day and age in which journalists insist on presenting stories as if 'all sides are equal' - sourcing is part of the problem.

49. 'Reportorial authority'?
I've worked in newsrooms as a reporter and editor the better part of the last 25 years, and that's the first time I've ever heard that term.

Reporters have no such "authority." If they tried to, an editor would take it out so fast he/she would need a new keyboard.

Reporters report; they don't decide. That's your job.

54. Journalism, as it has been practiced for the last 25-50-75 years, is
a significant *part* of what has lead our nation to this abysmal moment in time.

If the vast majority of Americans agree that we don't trust what the media says, then it is time to examine and challenge the basic assumptions of the field:

52. Huh?
How can 'sourcing' be a problem? Without sources giving information to reporters, they have nothing to report. We wouldn't have any information at all, much less objective or accurate information.

There's no such thing as 'reportorial authority'. A reporter gets the information, and he relays the information and says where he got the information. That's all. He's a messenger.

Are reporters human? Of course. But a GOOD reporter isn't going to put his own personal views out there and, if he does, he's gonna be squashed by his editors so fast he won't know what hit him.

That's what columnists are for.

53. I disagree. The 'classic' model of journalism is that
journalists are experts in a field and that they work on behalf of the citizens (the 4th estate). Journalism is now a useless f*'ing field because they believe that all they are supposed to do is report. The American model of 'objective' leads to brainless, spineless, desperation for access to the power-brokers.

In the UK, you state your personal position and then report as objectively as possible. If someone in power is lying to you, you confront them, report exactly what they said and explain to your readers why it is a lie. Another reporter with a different position does the same. The reader decides.

If 'journalism' in America is f*'ed up -- then we should examine and challenge the assumptions.

56. The UK 'model' is 'observation journalism'
Compared to American media (and in this I include Canada), quotes from sources are rare in British newspapers; it's much more "this is what I saw and this is what I interpret from it." This leaves readers with only the reporter's version, which isn't enough.

You may not be a fan of "he said/she said" journalism because — if I understand your point — it gives only a semblance of balance. But that depends on how many sources are quoted and, more importantly, whom they are. I agree that U.S. media has come to rely far too much on "unnamed sources" and I've campaigned against it, both actively as an editor ("Get something on the record") and on journalism forums.

But the point remains that often that's all reporters can get these days, with the Wregime's attitude toward the media. For all the times readers complain that "They're not telling the whole story," it's not because the reporter is complacent or being held back by lap-dog editors, publishers or owners (though the latter two certainly do exist) but because the Wregime simply cuts off information or intentionally supplies wrong information.

It isn't so much journalism that's fucked up as how it's perceived by all sides: as an enemy. It's a hell of lot harder for reporters to do their jobs when no one trusts them and some try to stifle them. It's a vicious cycle.

21. Why don't they say "Women and Children Killed in US Raid"?
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 02:27 PM by holboz
Because they stated in the news article most of the 11 people killed were women and children. Five children, two women (at least)...there's seven right there. But the military is only admitting to four.

I know there have been lots of horrible photos depicting injured and killed children but something about this story is like the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Maybe because it's so obvious that the military is lying (not that I didn't know that before).But I read the Reuters story that the kids were shot in the head. DAMNABLE DISGRACE.

I've never agreed with this war but I've not directed my anger at the troops who are only there because they were sent there. But I have a hard time "supporting the troops" when they decide a child under the age of six needs a bullet in their head.

on edit: just had to add "damnable disgrace" interjection

They don't do it as casually here, don't do "precision bombing" based on suspiscion...but it is all very sad.

31. I Measure Every Grief

I measure every grief I meet
With analytic eyes;
I wonder if it weighs like mine,
Or has an easier size.

I wonder if they bore it long,
Or did it just begin?
I could not tell the date of mine,
It feels so old a pain.

I wonder if it hurts to live,
And if they have to try,
And whether, could they choose between,
They would not rather die.

I wonder if when years have piled--
Some thousands--on the cause
Of early hurt, if such a lapse
Could give them any pause;

Or would they go on aching still
Through centuries above,
Enlightened to a larger pain
By contrast with the love.

The grieved are many, I am told;
The reason deeper lies,--
Death is but one and comes but once
And only nails the eyes.

There's grief of want, and grief of cold,
A sort they call 'despair,'
There's banishment from native eyes,
In sight of native air.

And though I may not guess the kind
Correctly yet to me
A piercing comfort it affords
In passing Calvary,

To note the fashions of the cross
Of those that stand alone
Still fascinated to presume
That some are like my own.

MR. MURTHA introduced the following joint resolution:

(H. J. Res._________ )-

To Redeploy U.S. Forces from Iraq.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

MR. MURTHA introduced the following joint resolution, which was referred to the Committee on ____________________________

Whereas Congress and the American People have not been shown clear, measurable progress toward establishment of stable and improving security in Iraq or of a stable and improving economy in Iraq, both of which are essential to "promote the emergence of a democratic government";

Whereas additional stabilization in Iraq by U.S. military forces cannot be achieved without the deployment of hundreds of thousands of additional U.S. troops, which in turn cannot be achieved without a military draft;

Whereas more than $277 billion has been appropriated by the United States Congress to prosecute U.S. military action in Iraq and Afghanistan;

Whereas, as of the drafting of this resolution, 2,079 U.S. troops have been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom;

Whereas U.S. forces have become the target of the insurgency;

Whereas, according to recent polls, over 80% of the Iraqi people want the U.S. forces out of Iraq;

Whereas polls also indicate that 45% of the Iraqi people feel that the attacks on U.S. forces are justified;

Whereas, due to the foregoing, Congress finds it evident that continuing U.S. military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the people of Iraq, or the Persian Gulf Region, which were cited in Public Law 107-243 as justification for undertaking such action;

Therefore be it

1) Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in
2)  Congress assembled,
3) That:
4) Section 1.  The deployment of United States forces in Iraq, by direction of Congress, is
5) hereby terminated and the forces involved are to be redeployed at the earliest practicable
6) date.
7) Section 2. A quick-reaction U.S. force and an over-the-horizon presence of U.S. Marines
8)  shall be deployed in the region.
9) Section 3. The United States of America shall pursue security and stability in Iraq
10)  through diplomacy.

38. That pic hurts me
Those little kids never had a chance to live their life. The same life that the Republicans here want to preserve by outlawing abortion. WHY? WHY? So they can wind up dead in a pile before their 4th birthday?

The people doing this are not human. And they are just as bad as the person who had to be removed from power.

Very disturbing...

We should be ashamed of ourselves as a nation that we've allowed people to come into power that would do such a thing. Who determines one life is more important, or deserves protection more than another life? Look at those little kids. America took their life from them. We are responsible for this. They will never know joy or laughter. This just makes me sick. Every one of them look like they were very cute kids, and now they lie in a pile. Dead. Because of American greed.

This is the picture that needs to be superimposed behind EVERY photo of George Bush from this day forward. With the caption: MURDERED BY AMERICA AND GEORGE BUSH.

And we don't need to censure Bush? Or impeach him? Why? Explain to me WHY after you take a look at this picture!

62. I hope the U.S. soldiers that launched those weapons sleep good tonight.
I wonder if they'll dream about their own children back here in the USA.

I wonder if they even know that they pushed the button that killed those children. :shrug: Ignorance is no excuse.

40. Don't worry. I'm sure the friends and surviving relatives were happy
...to sacrifice these children so the US could capture an alleged insurgent.

:sarcasm:

Now seriously, imagine if the American militia had done this during the Revolutionary War to wipe out loyalist factions. Maybe they even did. Does anyone in their right mind think the reaction would be, "Thank you, my child is dead but at least you caught that damned loyalist to the crown!"

41. Iraqis say? Like it's some f*%ked up rumor???
How many people do we have to kill for bush? The son makes his father's murderous "Highway of Death" pale in comparison.

I hope bush truly believes in his own Judgment Day and lives his own private hell because of it. It sickens me that his living a private hell may be the only justice those dead innocents get.

can make some funny t-shirts with the pictures.
Murdered Iraq kids is almost as funny as torturing men in Gitmo. Rush adores this type of stuff. He likes dead Iraqi babies it means more oil for oil company profits. Happy Rush? Happy GWB? I heard him mention, what screwballs we are on DU, this morning. Back atcha pigboy.

I have saved this photo and it will be used to create some anti-war stuff.

I fucking hate this war, too, and what is being done in my name. If Federal funds cannot be used to pay for abortion, they should not be used by my government to kill innocent children.

And people wonder why we HATE GEORGE BUSH? I dare any of the right-wing blowhards to look at that picture and tell me how anyone could love him after what he has done to humanity.

71. Even with the little information we are given here
"Eleven people, most of them women and children were killed"

at least six women and children died so that we could "net an insurgent suspect..."

This must be some fuzzy republican math if they think this is winning us anything besides undying hatred.

79. There are always "good" reasons to kill.
Even here, among "progressives", reasons are found backed up by the usual rationales of "doing good" or "defense" or any of the other reasons that justify murder.

is what we discussed here. Sadly predictable, inevitable and all Negroponte all the time. In the big scheme of things it appears like pure meaningless spite, and has been done by countless frustrated armies in the past. That is how the Iraqis will judge and remember us.
