Kerry Aides Predict Fireworks in the Senate this Afternoon over Arctic Drilling
Posted by Pamela Leavey
March 15th, 2006 @ 9:30 am
From MSNBC’s First Read:

Aides to Sen. John Kerry (D) advise that there will be “fireworks in the Senate this afternoon over Arctic drilling” as Kerry “continues his fight to prevent drilling in ANWR.” Kerry and colleague Maria Cantwell (D) are trying to circumvent efforts by Senate Republicans to protect the provision from a filibuster by inserting it into the filibuster-proof budget bill.

27. Rec'd Mine
Hate to admit this, but if it were not for Conyers, Kerry and Kennedy as well as DU and other online sites I would be totally clueless.

Maybe thats why they want to control the Internet, ba$tards!

5. I'm more concerned about the ANWAR drilling right now.
The censure motion is in committee at the moment. So what, you are going to not fight for ANWAR because you don't like the response to Feingold? As I understand it, Kerry supports him and has come out a while back saying he thinks the President broke the law.

7. Why not do both?
And I haven't heard any public statement of support from Kerry re censure. He, of all people, should step up and offer to cosponsor the resolution--no?

Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 02:10 PM by smoogatz
I know his staffers have said he'll vote for it if it comes up, but it ain't coming up unless there's a real wave of influential co-sponsorship, I don't think. The real measure of any senator's support would be the offer to co-sponsor, IMO.

14. Like leading a filibuster or just voting for it.
BTW - I'm glad Kerry's working on something the GOPs are trying to sneak through TODAY while others are distracted by a censure that Feingold is taking to committee for a later day.

17. I'm glad Kerry's doing what he's doing re ANWR
but can the man walk and chew gum at the same time? Offering to co-sponsor would take five minutes. As a leading progressive, you'd think Kerry'd be all over this opportunity to hold Bush's feet to the fire--no?

20. Feingold took it to committee for later and ANWR attack's going on NOW!
TODAY!

Can't you see GOPs are pulling this shit TODAY cuz they KNOW activists have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time?

21. Maybe there's more to this cosponsorship thing than you'd think...
Like maybe there's some really long, complicated form you have to fill out. Maybe Kerry will get around to it tomorrow, after he makes his stand for ANWR, which I support entirely. Tom Harkin just announced his cosponsorship, but maybe he's not as busy as Kerry. Or maybe he got one of his interns to fill out that pesky form...

26. Kerry's LEADING the fight on ANWR as ALWAYS. The other Dems count on him
as their key man on it.

Feingold already has moved censure to judiciary committee for later. ANWR is TODAY. Either you get that or you're not serious.

16. I called yesterday
he's my Senator, they told me he is 100% behind Feingold.

:tinfoilhat: me thinks the librul media is trying to cause a nonexistence crisis between Dem's.

why would the librul press bother to cover the high crimes of the adm. when they can talk about weak Dem's all the time.

to bad there isn't a missing blond somewhere that they can chase.

18. Right, but has Kerry actually come out and said so his own damn self--
up on his hind legs, in front of God and everybody? If not, you can't really blame the CM for not reporting something that didn't happen.

23. Why dont you call or email Kerry rather than hijacking a thread on
a different subject that is important too.

This is what I did (I emailed). This will be more useful and will not get people off subject (I imagine that you dont want people drilling in ANWR either and the vote is today).

28. Keep on if you want. I dont see how it is useful, that is all.
Calling them will at least make them understand that we care. Ranting here accomplishes nothing, however. But if you have some time to lose, fine with me.

13. Russ took it to committee - ANWR's slipped in while Dems are distracted
by censure.

Can't you be glad that Kerry's for censure and STILL paying attention to the maneuvers of our enemies?

19. I can. I am.
But so far his support for censure is only slightly less lukewarm than saying he likes Feingold's tie. He needs to step up and offer to co-sponsor, IMO.

though.

I'd like to see him co-sponsor too, but I suspect that, if he does, you will complain about something else.

31. Christ on a cracker.
I respect Kerry's record on the environment and social justice issues. Truly I do. He's a good guy--I just think he's weak tea when it comes to directly confronting Bushco; he was during the election and he is now. I don't know if he's getting bad advice or what, but as I said before--as a leading progressive in the Senate, he of all people should be all over this thing. And that's the last I'll say about it in this thread--which I had no intention of hijacking.

plays very nicely into the anti-drilling senators' hands. I hope they really work it. ANWR needs to be left alone.

37. Being postponed until tomorrow
Debate on a challenge to the Amendment, lead by Senators Cantwell and Kerry, was expected in the Senate at 5pm EST. However, due to a long list of items up for debate, it now appears likely that the issue will not be addressed until tomorrow.
