When will the right wing begin to criticize "V is for Vendetta"?
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 10:11 AM by FSogol
Can they really let a anti-government movie play with all the obvious parallels to the Bush Administration?

1. Some barriers for them to overcome....

It's fiction. Political criticism of fiction is fraught with mishap. They can't avoid looking like the villains of the piece.

It CANNOT be a top-down block, they'll have to slip in on the side, Limbaugh and Hannity will have to think of something to say about it. O'Reilly won't touch it. Rove may give them some pointers, but nothing they say will stick nearly as firmly as it might to a RL opponent, so they have to tread VERY carfeully.

5. They have a history of criticizing fiction
They criticized that environmental disaster movie with Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow?)and Dan Quayle even criticized tv character Murphy Brown (which he actually thought was a real person). :-)

Fiction or not it they cannot handle dissent.

9. Oh, don't get me wrong, i'm SURE they'll DO it...

But I don't think they can afford to be too direct about it in this case as the film (which I haven't seen, but suspect that if it's ANYTHING like the book will be a very scathing attack on authoritarian figures) contains a superhero. Well, he's not a proper superhero but he's pretty close, and criticising superheroes for being against fascist governments is going to look bizarre.

You're right, they can't handle dissent, and with any luck they'll get the movie a whole bunch of publicity.

2. Scarborough went after the movie last night on his show
as part of a "Hollywood is sympathetic to terrorists" or some nonsense like that.

I think the quote from the movie that really got to him was "You can change the world by blowing up a building."

8. But doesn't the Reich-wing agree with that quote?
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 10:58 AM by kenny blankenship
After all, isn't that what they've been shoving down our throats for years now? "September the eleventh was the day that changed EVERYTHING!"--that's what I remember them saying.
And saying and saying and saying, as they shredded individual civil liberties and as they threw away the Constitution's checks and balances against dictatorship and erected a pan-surveillance policestate.
I also seem to recall Neo-Con propagandists and paid agents of foreign governments saying things like "Give War a Chance" for years even before that.

I can't imagine how they can distance themselves from a sentiment like the one Scaborough quoted from the movie, without making total hypocrites of themselves.

4. Friday and then through early next week ...
They will be kicking it off on Friday, when the news channels love to start going soft for the weekend entertainment anyway.

6. I think they're hoping that if they don't talk about it, it will just
fade away. They control the media, they control the dialog. By not talking about it, even in the negative, they hope to ensure it will be overlooked.

It was all the whipped up outrage about Brokeback that made it a box office draw. If they all start slamming Vendetta they just bring attention to it.

11. Yes they are
And one thread has already been deleted.

Although there is some reasonable comment on IMDB, and a few adults who use it for research, it's mostly populated by the "adolescent" set - hormone driven, emotion wracked, mouth breathers. (I'm talking mental age here, by the bye).

The level of discourse rarely rises above Lounge level with some notable exceptions.

There are a lot of trolls and most of them are not too bright. They want ACTION, EXPLOSIONS, SEX only, any movie that could possibly engage their brains is dismissed as "ARTSY & DEPRESSING."

12. I don't know when, but when they do...
...you'll see pictures of Alan Moore everywhere.

Sorry, but that's the way they play.

15. I don't know,

But from the little I've heard they may not be the only ones. I thought the book was good, although not as clever as some of Moore's other stuff, but I seem to recall him describing the film as a "travesty" or some such, so I'm not holding my breath, I'm afraid.

"Top 10" as a TV serial, now... *that* I'd pay good money to see.

16. Moore Refuses To Even Be Part of the Movie
He also refuses to see any of the movies based on his comics.
