Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 12:46 AM by Anita Garcia
NAACP Announces Voting Assistance Centers to address the elections in Louisiana.
Houston
Dallas
San Antonio
Austin
Atlanta
Jackson
Memphis
Little Rock
Chicago
Mobile
All opening tomorrow to assist with Voter Registration and Displaced Absentee Ballot Requests and Affidavits!

NAACP also calls on the Department of Justice and the State of Louisiana to call off the April 22, 2006 election because African American votes will be disenfranchised.
After touring New Orleans and the surrounding area, Chief Operating Officer Nelson B. Rivers, III states that there is no way a fair election can be held.
President and CEO Bruce Gordon met with Jack Tanner at DOJ today to inform him that the NAACP is calling for the DOJ to halt the April 22, 2006 election.

4. You can volunteer!
If you live near any of the cities listed, call this number 1-866-OUR-VOTE and ask them where the assistance center will be and the times.
Most of the Voting Assistance Centers will be at the local NAACP office.

Maybe I can find something here.

This is the time for all good citizens to get busy.

10. Let displaced voters in your area know about the centers
Most of them will be open tomorrow to Friday! And, of course, any displaced voter can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE and the NAACP will walk them through the process without them having to travel to a voting center.

6. What if Nagins just cancelled the elections?
Are dared the feds to stop him? What if he declared himself mayor indefinently until the emergency is resolved? Would the feds be able to stop him?

9. The NAACP is now calling for the election to be postponed

Under Section 5 (and Section 2-for that matter) of the Voting Rights Act, the DOJ must approve any change in the polling place of voters.
300 of the 442 polling places in NOLA are gone.
If your polling place is gone, you have to vote at the Registrar's office in NOLA or in Algiers (if you live in Algiers).
You CAN NOT vote at any of the satellite polling places in Louisiana if you registered to vote after September 25th (Hurricane Rita).
So, those people who are motivated to vote NOW (I can think of more reasons the governments' failures post-Katrina) must all vote in one place.
Not fair.
Further, the Louisiana Secretary of State's website states that you have to mail in an "Affidavit" to vote absentee.
To many the word "Affidavit" implies a notarial stamp which in turn sounds like a "poll tax".

18. What makes you think he would do that?
He's got many opponents in the election. I doubt THEY would let him cancel it.

14. NAACP changes its position on April 22nd election.
On Monday, the NAACP was urging DOJ to press Louisiana into making substantial changes regarding the April 22nd election.
Today, Wednesday, the NAACP calls for DOJ to block the election.
