Pictures of Dubai in 1991 vs. 2005--need info
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 10:24 PM by laheina
A friend of mine emailed me these photos, which are very interesting.

Questioning the legitimacy of the photos below, I wanted to know which site that they had come from, and he couldn't remember! I'm trying to figure out if they are legit and/or if they come from a credible source. Is anyone familiar with them or with Dubai during this time period?

I haven't seen them around before, and I'm sorry if they're dupes.

on edit: I found *a* source for the photos, but they don't seem to know where they came from either.

2. It seems plausible to me.
They are really building Dubai up. My roommate last year's whole family lives there now. I could ask him. I dunno how long it will take to get ahold of him, though.

12. Egypt.
And before that, Saudi Arabia. It seems that life ain't too good in Egypt. The corruption is out of control.

3. The 1991 one might be from earlier...
... the difference seems a bit stark. It could be true though. As JohnnyCougar said, they've really been building the place up and developing it the past 20 years and the overwhelming majority of the population are non-citizen emigres as well (and not just laborers - many middle-class South Asians and Iranians have settled there too because of jobs or in the case of Iranians, because of greater personal freedoms compared with home).

5. I found a source that said it was probably closer to 1988.
That was from a resident at that time, and can be found at the first link under the pics.

It is the stark contrast, and the narrow span of time, that intrigues me. Likewise, the relation of the dates to Bush 41's presidency.

The same guy that emailed this to me had some interesting perspectives regarding the recent port fiasco, as well as the relationship between Dubai and the Bushes. I just want to fact check before I post. :hi:

4. UPDATE: In the comments section of that blog...
UAE residents say that the above picture is a *little* earlier - around '88 or so.

I guess I'm wondering where did everybody live in '88? I'm guessing there are other areas and this is just the central business district that has been developed more recently.

7. I was looking for population stats as well.
But I've only found that info for 1994.

This may take more effort than I thought. :)

9. Trump is building a tower down there somewhere, they've got a...
world class tennis tournament, and F1 racing ambitions http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns13688.html maybe it is better to belly up to the bar and buy your nemesis a drink  and see what shakes out, just don't be so fucking stupid about it x(

13. Huh?
I'm sorry bridgit. I've been in a testy mood today, so I don't want to over react--but whose being "so fucking stupid about it?"

And the last drink that I had was St. Paddy's day 4 years ago. I usually don't do that.

The guy that I've been speaking of is my friend, and I think that he has some interesting ideas. I, however, tend toward the :tinfoilhat: at times, so I was investigating. I'm just not as good at some others with *finding* the info that I'm looking for.

18. to me the photos represent a stunning, if reasonable application...
of funding well applied, so as to accentuate; Dubai is developing hand over fist...we can play, or not play; but some of our own people are already playing was i think my point. i will not be the one to imply that it is all about money however...

after a burned out day on the road all around the central valley landscape; it was clearly little ole me that has over reacted. as for buying your nemesis a drink? what's the old saying?

hold your friends close, and your enemies even closer

though i'll add a belated :sarcasm: here if you think it will help :hi:

14. Yeah, my roommates now are salivating over that.
They are both Architecture Master's students.

I guess my old one is, too. I'm going to go to Dubai and visit him when once I graduate and have a decent job. By then, that tower should be complete.

This just reminds me, though, I'll have lots of places to visit after I'm done with grad school. My last two roomates were UAE/Egyptian/Saudi and Iraqi, and my roommates this year are Indan and Tanzanian.

I think there has been a governmental push for development, but I may be thinking of Qatar.

20. I watched the Discovery Science Channel today
and they had a special called "Building the Ultimate Dubai: City of Dreams." It replays at 2:00 am (rather late) but it is worth watching....truly incredible.

Dubai: City of Dreams

With predictions that the United Arab Emirates would run out of oil in ten years, the cash-rich city of Dubai decided to create a vacation city for businessmen and European tourists.
