So I'm watching a Nascar race on Sunday...
And I tell my husband, "Wow, look at all of that fuel that is just being wasted!" He, being no fan of Nascar by the way, says, "You've GOT to be the only person who would watch a Nascar race and think of its effects on the environment."

I'm not the only one, am I? Am I?

1. If I happen upon a race on TV
my first thought is usually about the noise and air pollution, THEN I think about the fuel consumption.

Damn silly-ass sport, if you ask me.

2. No, your not
I love Nascar, watch it every Sunday and I have thought of this many, many times. Not only is it wasteful although enjoyable the thing that irks me the most is they use leaded fuel. At least thats what I heard a while back. They should not be allowed to use leaded fuel.

4. If it's sporting and heroic to drive a car around a big oval 500 times,
then we've totally cheapened the words "heroic" and "sporting".

I think there should be a NASCAR mini-level of
alt-fuel or electric cars . . .

Now, by that, I mean that there should be a national draw for a recognized contest to get people excited about them, not just . . . "Oh, there's an electric car . . .". When they start racing AND getting good mileage . . . that might be what piques the interest of the masses . . .

8. If they were serious about limiting speed
They would limit their total fuel. You have twentyfive gallons to go five hundred miles as fast as you can. Make it a little more interesting & a little more practically rewarding too.

11. That is a really good idea!
It would take a lot of skill and judgment to negotiate the challenges that would bring to the teams. It would definitely make things interesting. :)

5. For deity's sake NO! That's one of the big reason's I hate
NASCAR. At a time when consumption of fossil fuels has so many negative impacts it's hard to watch people just WASTE what is becoming a very precious commodity.
Being an old fart, my feelings go clear back to the Nixon admin when OPEC held this country hostage with their oil and Nixon imposed the 55 MPH limit. We were warned this would happen 30 fn years ago.
So no, I know you are far from being alone.

6. And look at all the fuel that is wasted on airplanes, cars, and buses
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 07:59 PM by RGBolen
when there are horses and buggies for sale. Of course then all the feed for them, but why waste all that feed, there are shoes for sale all over.

7. The NFL uses more fuel than NASCAR in a season.
As does MLB.

No NASCAR fan, here, but that is the way it is.

9. Major League Baseball uses 100,000 times as much fuel
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 08:02 PM by Elwood P Dowd
Flying teams around the country for 162 games from April to October.

More fuel is wasted in one day of Americans stopped at drive-in windows than NASCAR uses in an entire season.

NASCAR could run races 24/7 for 365 days a year and still not waste as much fuel as one day of traffic jams in the Los Angeles metro.

13. Not hardly
As much as I like the sport, every time I see auto racing I am stunned at the lack of contemplation as to the results of our choices that some among us apparently make.

There's going to come a day when we are wishing for enough fuel to support the necessities of life, and will think back to how much has been consumed on non-essentials...

Really freaking sad...

14. No, you are not. I got after my husband for being a nascar fan
way back in the early 1990's before fuel was obviously problematic (even though the environment already was). I like NASCAR, but I think the next nascar challenge should be a race on alternative fuels.
