Bush jokes about Cheney shooting, Russert does drag at annual dinner
RAW STORY
Published: March 13, 2006

The annual 121st dinner of the Gridiron Club, a group of senior hill reporters, featured celebrities, lawmakers, The Marine Corps band, send-ups of the Vice President by Barack Obama and President Bush, and some peculiar stage routines by well-known reporters, The Washington Post reports.

Helen Thomas, as a Scarlett O'Hara/Hillary Clinton cross, sang a song that compared the White House to a plantation, all decked out in green curtains (complete with Carol Burnett curtain rod). Barack Obama joked that he was nervous to stand so close to the Vice President, in the presence of alcohol. But the most memorable performers of the evening (for better or worse) were Tim Russert and President Bush.

Excerpts from the Post's recap follow:

5. While people in Iraq and Afghanistan are being...
blown up these fools are having a grand time. The RWing and complicit Dems have no concept of the word "shame".

3. Regarding Helen's number:
Just thinking about that original Carol Burnett skit with the dress-out-of-drapes-with-curtain-rod-and-tassles ("I saw it in the window and just couldn't resist") makes me bust a gut. A true classic!

7. I'm gonna hurl.
Singing about torture, subbing "rendition" for "tradition" and borrowing the "Fiddler on the Roof" song was not funny at all.

8. I can understand diplomacy - and professional courtesy, however,
this is over the line for me... It's hard to understand any of the press corp joking with this bunch of war criminal and liars...

There is nothing to joke about with georgie porgie, nothing at all...To laugh about the horrors he has created or shooting your friend in the face, diminishes the reality of their actions.

Will they ever be held accountable??for anything???

9. Bush quote:
"Dick, I've got an approval rating of 38 percent and you shoot the only trial lawyer in the country who likes me."

I wonder if Whittington is laughing about having been shot in the face. I doubt it.

11. Unbelievable, isn't it?
He could have died of the heart attack. He apologizes, and they joke about it.

What really caught my attention during his apology was that he said it happened Friday night, not Saturday night as Cheney and the others said.

I haven't seen Whittington since.
