Baghdad Street Fears Imminent Civil War

Rumors in Iraq have a weight that government and even newspaper reports don't seem to carry, and the latest rumors suggest Iraqis believe a civil war is imminent and the United States secretly wants it to happen.

Just three days after U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld criticized what he believes to be "exaggerated" and one-sided press coverage of apparently sectarian violence in Iraq sparked by the Feb. 22 attack on a Shiite mosque in Samarra, U.S. military intelligence reported that "most Iraqis increasingly fear an all-out civil war will begin soon."

"In fact, the entire group believes that Iraq is at least in a state of low-level civil war and most believe that the country is one assassination or Samarra-type event away from all-out civil war," it stated.

That suggestion is contained in the March 10 edition of the "Baghdad Mosquito," a daily collection of "open source intelligence" culled from Iraqi newspapers, as well as rumors from a group of "knowledgeable" Iraqis.

6. I agree with your sentiment here -

just don't see why in the world Bush would WANT this to happen. Yes, it would sink him in the polls, and it would cause the Repubs to lose the '06 election. Also, the American people would lose faith in the war effort altogether and would call for withdraw, meaning Bush would lose and, according to his own philosophy, the terrorists would win.

They seem to be going with the "if these crazy Iraqis want to kill each other, it's not my fault" tactic. Bush actually saves face with the right wing. It's not his fault. The Iraqis are crazy. They screwed up. He's freed up to either attack Iran or heroically bring home the troops in time to make plausible another GOP win in 2006. He won't be held accountable, and we can move on to cutting social programs to pay for it.

12. It has always been their Plan B

BushCo removed a dictator who kept the lid on a hornet's nest radicals, and things didn't go as well as they had thought with the alleged "freedom" crap. So, they incite clashes between radical groups in Iraq, and stand back to watch the games begin. In the end, a large part of the radicals have been done away with, and the blood isn't allegedly on BushCo's hands.

Big Oil and the military industrial complex keep their contracts on Iraq, a large number of radicals are killed, and the Iraqi people are strongly reminded how they do not want to return to the radical ways.
