UN talks on new UN rights body given one last week

By Irwin Arieff
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - General Assembly President Jan Eliasson gave U.N. members on Friday one last week to work out a deal for a new U.N. human rights body that is opposed by the United States but backed by human rights groups and the vast majority of U.N. members.

1. A rhetorical question? The answers are obvious.
From Abu-Ghraib, Guantanamo, mass killings in Iraq, the death penalty, the CIA thugs around the world, assasinations, "renditions", not to mention overstocked prisons right here, the USofA complaining about "Human Rights" abuses would be laughable if it weren't so tragic.

7. Their objections are pretty much an admission to guilt.
If you ask me that anyone fighting so hard against human rights is guilty of violating them.

2. read the article : it's pure sabotage
if the text doesn't passes in consensus, it opens a pandora's box of amendments. This is its turn allows plenty of countries to "redefine" human rights, which fits the torture lawyers in Washington. The result will probably be a gloomier image of the US among many nations.

4. Obvious answer
The US has been a major violator of human rights for decades, hence, not too keen on anyone keeping track. Ya know, "family values!" A good Christian country!

9. I don't know why...
I don't see how anyone could bring themselves to do such things to another human being.

So, no, I don't know why.

10. I was browsing the internet yesterday and saw a quote from China
regarding the US criticizing it for human rights. They DELIGHT in holding this country in contempt and said something to the affect, this administration has a history of 'moral conceit'. Look, when the UN is called upon on behalf of public housing residents (Cabrini Greens) we have problems...

build a 'good' image internationally to facilitate trade. Point being, even they think the US is too hypocritical to submit to human rights review.

Edit for spelling...if I missed more, too bad :p

14. So basically there's no difference between America and 'terrorist nations'
The difference is that terrorists have an excuse. They have been brainwashed and only been given access to censored information that portrays America as the villain. We live in a democracy. We have no such excuse.

15. Because...
...they want to run the world by themselves. That's why they hate the UN. The UN is about countries working together to solve problems, and that's the way it should be because we are all stuck on this planet together, & we are all affected by what happens here. We have to find ways to solve our problems & get along. The conservatives hate this idea. They want to run the whole show themselves.

Tammy
