Cheney Cited UAE-Saddam Relations As A Reason US Might Need To Invade Iraq In 2000...

TRANSCRIPT FROM THE VP DEBATE W/ SENATOR LIEBERMAN, 10/6/00

MR. SHAW: This question is for you, Mr. Secretary. If Iraq's President Saddam Hussein were found to be developing weapons of mass destruction, Governor Bush has said he would "take him out." Would you agree with such a deadly policy?

MR. CHENEY: We might have no other choice. We'll have to see if that happens. The thing about Iraq, of course, was at the end of the war we had pretty well decimated their military. We had put them back in a box, so to speak. We had a strong international coalition raid against them, effective economic sanctions and a very robust inspection regime that was in place. So that the inspection regime under U.N. auspices was able to do a good job of stripping out the capacity to build weapons of mass destruction -- the work that he'd been doing that had not been destroyed during the war on biological, chemical agents as well as a nuclear program. Unfortunately, now we find ourselves in a situation where that's started to fray on us, where the coalition now no longer is tied tightly together.

Recently the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, two Gulf states, have reopened diplomatic relations with Baghdad. The Russians and the French now are flying commercial airliners back into Baghdad and sort of thumbing their nose, if you will, at the international sanctions regime. And of course the U.N. inspectors have been kicked out. And there's been absolutely no response.

7. No, we need to keep our powder dry.
No need to rock the boat. This might make some people uncomfortable if it got out.

3. Cheney and "if you will"...
Interesting how often that phrase turns up in Dickie's transcripts.

It is almost as if by saying that, the interviewer is automatically accepting what Cheney says as fact, if you will.

15. What deal are you talking about?
He obviously backed going to war and said (see OP) that Abu Dhabi was involved w/Saddam.
Do you mean did he back the ports deal? I'm sure he did because I haven't heard anything
to the contrary.
As has been said often with these thugs, follow the money, and his pockets are overflowing.

17. You Just Don't Get It.
Bad things that occurred in the past only matter when a Democrat was involved. Rethuglicans were just participating in youthful indiscretions that don't want or need to talk about. It's all water under the bridge and people really need to move on. :sarcasm:

22. "Take him out."
That doesn't mean on a date. That means assasination, which is illegal. There we have the proof that the Iraq invasion was on these criminals minds even before Bush was selected.

...during that debate, if you will, as he made several errors in that statement.

Like where he said, "...Recently the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, two Gulf states...," That's wrong, Bahrain is part of the U.A.E., it's not a separate state.

30. That is incorrect.
Bahrain, Qatar and the Trucial States (aka the current UAE, 9 emirates in total,) sort of banded together post WWII under a British protectorate. Agreement couldn't be reached, so Bahrain was granted independence itself in 1971, Qatar soon after that, and the remaining seven formed the UAE of the present.

29. it's not hard to figure out what they will say about that
Basically, they will say that - that was then, under Clinton's mismanagement of Iraq and before 9/11. Whereas now, under Bush's leadership, the UAE is a valuable and strategic (and profitable, if you will), ally in the war on Tara.
