(M)Ann Coulter: "Note to self: hire two more interns to screen hate mail"
From Coulter's March 8 column, "It's hard out here for a wimp":

George Clooney made the only stand for liberal Hollywood, smugly declaring: "We are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while. I think it's probably a good thing. We're the ones who talked about AIDS when it was just being whispered, and we talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular. ... (T)his group of people gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the backs of theaters. I'm proud ... to be part of this community, and proud to be out of touch." Forget about Hollywood being ahead of the big issues: Hollywood has never even been on time for the big issues. This is why, for example, in the middle of an epic war with Islamic fascists, Hollywood is still making movies about the Nazis. Now and then, just for variety, they tackle a more current topic, like the Jim Crow era.

Even on AIDS -- which is something you'd expect people like Clooney to know something about -- Hollywood was about seven years behind. Wait, no -- bad choice of words. Even on AIDS, Hollywood got caught with its pants down. Still no good. On AIDS, Hollywood got it right in the end. Oh, dear ... Note to self: Must hire two more interns to screen hate mail. The point is: The Hollywood set didn't start wearing AIDS ribbons to the Oscars until 1992: 10 years after The New York Times described AIDS; seven years after AIDS was the cover story on Life magazine; seven years after AIDS was in People magazine; five years after Oprah did a show on AIDS.

Only recently has George Clooney heard about segregation. (He's against it.) But he still can't nail down the details of something that ended nearly half a century ago.

Contrary to Clooney's impassioned speech, no theaters ever forced black people to sit in the back. If you were trying to oppress people, you would make them sit in the front, which are the worst seats in the house. Or you'd just make them watch a George Clooney movie.

3. i wouldn't piss on her head if her hair was on fire.
an amazingly weak commentary on her part -- even if hollywood was ''late'' in talking about a subject matter -- it was still on the big screen for everyone to look at in a way that it was not every where else in society.

that still makes it first.

she can't can't get over that fact.

kinda like she can't get over the fact that dung beetles are her best friends. makes her bitter.

18. The black people often sat in the balcony.
Back when theaters had balconies.

Odd note: Houston had 3 old-style "movie palaces" downtown. But they were all demolished in the 60's--probably before the preservation movement started here.

There was one, small, theater downtown, formerly reserved for the "colored people." It sat empty for years but has been wonderfully restored. It's not a regular theater, but can be rented for weddings, parties & art openings. A lovely little place & a rare bit of Old Houston.

emergency rooms, etc.

African American people had a separate waiting room and were helped after the Whites regardless of who needed help first.

Of course, there were also situations where black people were denied treatment at "white" facilities. One of the most horrible instances of this is the African-American Dr. who discovered using plasma for blood transfusions that saved many soldiers' lives in WWII (his name escapes me right now)...he was in a car accident and was refused service by a "white" hospital and died from blood loss. He would have probably survived if he had received a blood transfusion.

Edit:

Dr. Charles Drew. Here is a link to some info about him...note the change at the bottom because the original writer left off the fact that he was refused service at an "all white" hospital.

41. That's exactly right. Many older buildings had a balcony and that is where
African Americans had to sit. There is still an historic theater in my hometown (which is the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement) that has a balcony and they have preserved the sign that was there. It's now an independent movie house run by the artistic community. I always sat in the balcony when I went to a movie.

Many old courthouses were the same way.

So I'm not sure what this witch meant...if she was just trying to be a smart-ass because he said the "back" of the theater or she is just too stupid to know. It could be that movie theaters that didn't have balconies did force African Americans to sit in the back or they probably didn't let them in at all.

26. No it's true.
If you consider the balcony the back of the theatre (Which it is). We still have one of these theatres. There was a back entrance for African Americans down in an alley to keep them away from the whites, then they took a narrow hall up to the balcony.

16. I find this somewhat ironic:
This is why, for example, in the middle of an epic war with Islamic fascists, Hollywood is still making movies about the Nazis.

I guess she never saw the movie Three Kings starring none other then George Clooney. Release date 1999 meaning the script was probably written at least 3 years earlier or only a few years after that war.

Here is the plot summary from www.IMBD.com

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube star in "Three Kings," the story of a small group of adventurous American soldiers in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War who are determined to steal a huge cache of gold reputed to be hidden somewhere near their desert base. Finding a map they believe will take them to the gold, they embark on a journey that leads to unexpected discoveries, enabling them to rise to a heroic challenge that drastically changes their lives.

In the days immediately after the Gulf War, a group of American soldiers come across a secret Iraqi map, which discloses the whereabouts of a bunker where Iraq is storing stolen gold and treasure from Kuwait. The soldiers hope to take the gold and keep it for themselves. However, when they arrive at the site, they discover that the Iraqi army is more concerned about persecuting its civilians than stopping them from stealing the gold. They learn that the civilians have been encouraged by the U.S. government to rise up and fight Sadaam Hussein, but are facing certain execution because the U.S. military refuses to help them. This incident creates a crisis of conscience for the American soldiers. Do they take the money and run, leaving the civilians to face certain death at the hands of the Iraqi army? Or do they risk losing the gold in order to escort them to safety across the border into Iran?

Oh wait, re-reading this, now I realize why she wouldn't mention this. Something to do with that part about how the US military refused to help the Iraqi citizens in their uprising against Saddam Hussein. Kind of shoots those noble Republican ideas of American exceptionalism in the foot. Unfortunately, it is actually true.

Oh and another one I just remembered would be Black Hawk Down which came out in 2001.

Not that we didn't know it anyway.

Found a nice collection of photos of segregation. The 22nd photo shows a man using the "colored" entrance to a theater.

Does she think there wasn't a special section he was forced to use once he got inside?

St. Elsewhere first did an Aids story in 1983. They also used another Aids storyline a few years later when Mark Harmon left the show.

Coulter confuses Hollywood taking a stance on an issue with the artistic output of Hollywood.

What Clooney was referring to was the art. Not ribbons or causes.

http://www.cmhpf.org/Surveys&rgrandtheater.htm

In the early years of Jim Crow, segregation in movie theaters did not usually extend to separate facilities for white and black; more often, movie theaters simply designated certain sections of their seating as being for “whites only” and others (most often the less desirable rear or balcony seating) for “colored” patrons.
