George Clooney made the only stand for liberal Hollywood, smugly declaring: "We are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while. I think it's probably a good thing. We're the ones who talked about AIDS when it was just being whispered, and we talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular. ... (T)his group of people gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the backs of theaters. I'm proud ... to be part of this community, and proud to be out of touch." Forget about Hollywood being ahead of the big issues: Hollywood has never even been on time for the big issues. This is why, for example, in the middle of an epic war with Islamic fascists, Hollywood is still making movies about the Nazis. Now and then, just for variety, they tackle a more current topic, like the Jim Crow era.

Even on AIDS -- which is something you'd expect people like Clooney to know something about -- Hollywood was about seven years behind. Wait, no -- bad choice of words. Even on AIDS, Hollywood got caught with its pants down. Still no good. On AIDS, Hollywood got it right in the end. Oh, dear ... Note to self: Must hire two more interns to screen hate mail. The point is: The Hollywood set didn't start wearing AIDS ribbons to the Oscars until 1992: 10 years after The New York Times described AIDS; seven years after AIDS was the cover story on Life magazine; seven years after AIDS was in People magazine; five years after Oprah did a show on AIDS.

Only recently has George Clooney heard about segregation. (He's against it.) But he still can't nail down the details of something that ended nearly half a century ago.

Contrary to Clooney's impassioned speech, no theaters ever forced black people to sit in the back. If you were trying to oppress people, you would make them sit in the front, which are the worst seats in the house. Or you'd just make them watch a George Clooney movie.

Back when theaters had balconies.

Odd note: Houston had 3 old-style "movie palaces" downtown. But they were all demolished in the 60's--probably before the preservation movement started here.

There was one, small, theater downtown, formerly reserved for the "colored people." It sat empty for years but has been wonderfully restored. It's not a regular theater, but can be rented for weddings, parties & art openings. A lovely little place & a rare bit of Old Houston.

emergency rooms, etc.

African American people had a separate waiting room and were helped after the Whites regardless of who needed help first.

Of course, there were also situations where black people were denied treatment at "white" facilities. One of the most horrible instances of this is the African-American Dr. who discovered using plasma for blood transfusions that saved many soldiers' lives in WWII (his name escapes me right now)...he was in a car accident and was refused service by a "white" hospital and died from blood loss. He would have probably survived if he had received a blood transfusion.

41. That's exactly right. Many older buildings had a balcony and that is where

African Americans had to sit. There is still an historic theater in my hometown (which is the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement) that has a balcony and they have preserved the sign that was there. It's now an independent movie house run by the artistic community. I always sat in the balcony when I went to a movie.

Many old courthouses were the same way.

So I'm not sure what this witch meant...if she was just trying to be a smart-ass because he said the "back" of the theater or she is just too stupid to know. It could be that movie theaters that didn't have balconies did force African Americans to sit in the back or they probably didn't let them in at all.

If you consider the balcony the back of the theatre (Which it is). We still have one of these theatres. There was a back entrance for African Americans down in an alley to keep them away from the whites, then they took a narrow hall up to the balcony.

I guess she never saw the movie Three Kings starring none other then George Clooney. Release date 1999 meaning the script was probably written at least 3 years earlier or only a few years after that war.

Oh wait, re-reading this, now I realize why she wouldn't mention this. In the early years of Jim Crow, segregation in movie theaters did not usually extend to separate facilities for white and black; more often, movie theaters simply designated certain sections of their seating as being for “whites only” and others (most often the less desirable rear or balcony seating) for “colored” patrons.
