A day in the life of a C-SPAN watcher
Two very important events occurred today and nobody reported it and it wasn’t even noticed by the most avid political junkies and probably got past the attention of most DU’ers. If you were watching the Senate on C-SPAN2 today you would have seen it. It amazes me that these big events go completely unnoticed. Here they are:

First:
If you didn’t like this Dubai deal, then your unsung hero is Senator Charles D. (Chuck) Schumer. Schumer showed great political courage yesterday when he introduced an amendment to the Senate ethics reform bill. This amendment basically said that Dubai could not own the ports in question. Of course this caused great anger and gas amongst the Republicans in the Senate. They were beside themselves. Why? They had to face the issue head on. There was no longer any cover for them. Do you or do you not support this deal. Am I going to have to make a stand here? Oh my god, what about the voters? But what if I have to go against the President?

Although Lou Dobbs tonight didn’t mention Schumer, Dobbs should of because Schumer’s actions are the straw that broke the camels back and brought this deal tumbling down. And indeed, I seen this story nowhere in the media today.

Second:
Many of the political pundits are now saying that the Republicans are running from the president. While this may be true in the House, it is not true at all in the Senate. When Bill Frist tried to avoid voting on the Schumer amendment by calling for a vote to cut off debate, the Senate voted right down party lines.
Even Republican Senator Collins, who spoke out against the Dubai deal, took one for the President and voted on a partisan line to avoid voting on the Schumer amendment. The Republican Senators are still in the business of rubber stamping despite the wisdom of the main stream media.

Well there you have it. My day of watching glue dry. Thank you C-SPAN.

1. Thanks for the update -- Lou Dobbs and other pundits still stuck on
"democrats making political hay on the issue" - that way they can dismiss Schumer and concentrate on how great the Republicans are.

2. Savage early on said the only ones fighting this were democrats;
he was furious at W and the republicans and went on and on and on that the democrats were the only ones who understood what was going on

I saw on another DU thread that Tweety claimed Savage was the one who really got the outrage going and that T also claimed the republicans were the ones fighting. Well, I actually heard Savage and HE was praising the democrats.

RWers just have talking points and praise each other; but who actually listens to what the others say?????

7. You inspired me to make a Video clip of that
I had recorded some of this from today and gagged when I heard Frist whining about the cloture vote. So I put a compilation together with Dorgan, Schumer, Reid, Dodd and Frist that shows who the wussies are

8. You are absolutely right! Schumer hit one out of the park today...
I think I will call his office tomorrow and thank him!

And you are right - they voted on party lines to avoid voting on the ports deal. Weasels... I mentioned on another thread that I thought the 'news release' post Snotty's press conference was all smoke and mirrors to stall the vote that was going to happen.

I'm betting Rove saw what an utter disaster the forced vote would have been - he's looking for his next coattail to ride on - and he wasn't going to let that happen to any of his potential employers in the Senate.

Time to call old Leslie Blitzer and let fly that the Dubai Ports - who only a few hrs earlier were outraged and angry and 'threatening retaliation' - had demurred and were going to allow a US company to assume control (whatever that means). Scuttle the vote - "we can't vote now! we have no idea what this deal means!" - and call it a day...

10. kicking-the meme "All GOP went against Bush" must STOP -it
was DEMOCRATS in the SENATE that brought this up and Frist was AGAINST it, and tried to STOP a vote.
