BREAKING on Senate Floor! Dubai to transfer ports to US company!!
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 02:28 PM by The Witch
Warner reading press release...

"In order to preserve good relationship... transferring ports to United States company"

.... hasn't said which company but Halliburton is a good bet!

Warner believes acting in good faith recognizing circumstances....

Schumer is still suspicious, says vote against cloture because of breaking news. amendment should still remain in play, he says.

1:48 pm - Reid up. Saying Democrats forced ethics vote. Being a li'l bit braggy, saying Congress can do 2 things at once.

1:51 - Seems to be going into a canned speech, feels a little irrelevant... c'mon Harry, improvise!

1:53 - Fristenstein says that Americans finish what they start and expect Congress to do the same. (Message: Vote for cloture.)

Using the Greatest Forum to get out my message now----

Frist is now arguing for cloture against Reid. This is BAD. It's going to look like Democrats are stonewalling on ethics reform!!

2:25 p.m. Cloture comes in just about along party lines so we "win." But we're still gonna look bad.
We didn't get Chafee.
We got Jeffords and Salazar, though.
Feinstein changed her aye to no.

I'm also wondering what else they own. Also, if Halliburton or some other company gets the business, what's to stop Dubai from buying up their stock?

Wouldn't want those Internet bloggers figuring it out. It's got to be someone so toxic that they don't want to make it public till this passes. Some sort of Halliburton sub. or Dubai sub., I'd bet.

Halliburton has been working with the UAE for years. It's just becoming more transparent now.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 9, 2003

HALLIBURTON AND MARJAN OILFIELD SERVICES TO FORM EMIRATES LOGGING COMPANY L.L.C

Houston, Texas and Abu Dhabi, U.A.E - Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) and Marjan Oilfield Services, a member of the Al Fahim Group, announced today that they have signed a Joint Venture Agreement and Memorandum and Articles of Association to incorporate a Limited Liability Company to offer open and cased hole logging and wireline perforating services in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

"The combined logging and perforating strengths of Marjan and Halliburton make for an unbeatable combination," said Joe Rainey, division vice president MEO, Halliburton. "Both companies already have strong positions in the Abu Dhabi market and the JV enhances the positions of both Marjan and Halliburton."

"The Group is committed to this very important sector of the industry, investing for the future in the latest technology, committed to Health, Safety and Environment issues and service quality values; joining forces with Halliburton can only enhance the position of both companies in serving the local community," said Aamer Al Fahim, managing director of Al Fahim Group.

Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 02:13 PM by Cleita
Isn't their corporate headquarters a post office box in Bermuda? I think now would be the perfect time to call Halliburton on this if indeed they are the "US" company. I hope Congress says that it's not good enough. We need an American company incorporated in America!

On edit: I was wrong about Bermuda, but I did dig this up on google:

61. so? we'll contract out our security
to an American company instead of a Dubaian one?

How is this better?

Shouldn't the security of our sea ports have the same priority as our airports, ie. be under the aegis of the Department of Homeland Security?

After all, our SECURITY is supposed to be the job of that shiny, new cabinet department, isn't it?

152. here's the CNN story
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A United Arab Emirates-owned company has agreed to turn over all of its operations at U.S. ports to an American "entity," Sen. John Warner said Thursday.

Reading a statement from DP World on the Senate floor, Warner, a Virginia Republican, said the reason is "to preserve" the strong relationship between the UAE and United States.

The announcement comes after congressional leaders reportedly told President Bush that the deal for DP World to assume some operations at six U.S. ports appeared dead on Capitol Hill.

On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee essentially blocked the deal by voting 62-2 to insert an amendment into a $68 billion emergency supplemental funding bill for military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Still doesn't say what "entity" will take over.

149. Dubai Firm to Give Up Stake in U.S. Ports
Dubai Firm to Give Up Stake in U.S. Ports

By DAVID ESPO 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A Dubai-owned company said Thursday it is giving up its management stake in some U.S. ports, a move made as congressional leaders warned
President Bush that both the House and Senate appeared ready to block the takeover.

It was not immediately clear whether the announcement would be enough to cool widespread sentiment in Congress to pass legislation blocking the deal, which has become a burdensome election-year problem for Republicans.

Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, took the Senate floor to read to colleagues a company press release disclosing its new stance.

"Because of the strong relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the United States and to preserve that relationship, DP World has decided to transfer fully the U.S. operation of P&O Operations North America to a United States entity," DP World's chief operating officer, Edward H. Bilkey, said in the statement that Warner relayed to other senators. The announcement did not specify which American company would be involved.
