Anyone hear of the Third Wave?
I only heard about it recently - its a social experiment conducted by a high school teacher in the 1960s. His students were studying WW2 and wanted to know how an entire country could follow a man like Hitler, and claim ignorance of the atrocities going on around them.

http://www.toddstrasser.com/html/thewave2.htm

After reading this, I am really convinced that the same things are happening here.

We have a Republican party that values blind faith in leadership above thinking for yourself. Followers are rewarded for holding to the party line, rather than advancing new ideas. They have become the "in" crowd, looking down on those outside their group. They even have code words to identify each other - "family values" "compassionate conservative" "pro-life".

Scary stuff.

1. I think you mean The Wave.
It is a book by Todd Strasser, and later a movie.

It is based on a real incident. Rent the movie if you can find it. It is worth it.

3. No, but I'll check out your link
The few times I've listened to Hannity on the radio, I found it odd that the first thing many of the callers say to him is, "You're a great American." It is a code, as you noted. And, I just cringe every time I hear it. In some ways, that alone is what possesses me to check in on occasion to hear what they are up to. I can only stomach so much, though.

6. It is creepy. Very.
Especially the way they say it. It's cultish. I certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to listen to Hannity, but if you haven't heard this aspect of his radio program, which runs at least 3 hours each day, I would do it just for perspective. I know that a lot of people are prone to ignore these talking heads, but, it is truly scary to listen to them, and I have learned a lot about who we're dealing with and what we're dealing with just by tuning in every now and then when I'm in the car. Scary shit.

5. THe ones that creep me out are the ones who say "Hannitize Me!"
It's so gross on so many levels. Can you imagine a Mike Malloy listener or a Randi Rhodes listener saying "Malloyize Me!" or "Randi-ize" me! Of course not. Progressives recoil at such cult-of-personality BS, not to mention the underlying psycho-sexual submissive undertones of the expression.

Sick, sick sick.

7. Is that like "dildoize" me?
If you haven't seen the bit on TDS about the Women's Prison in MN, you should check it out. Bo Deitl makes another appearance and is priceless.

11. Thats exactly it
they identify each other in code phrases, it reinforces the idea that they are "in" and everyone else is "out".

And elections for them are more about winning, than about issues or ideas. Its "our side won!" as if thats the whole point of the election, it proves that your "in" crowd is superior. It doesnt matter if the guy you just elected is an idiot, because anything the party leaders do must be right.
