My Dad had a stroke tonight...
74 years old. But Dammit all, do I really have to hear my sister bitch at me?
I guess she was informed After me.

Someone play some Charlie Parker, that's what Dad likes...

5. Damn. That's the age my dad was
when he passed. I hadn't seen it coming. But that's one you can never prepare yourself for.

If that is what is to happen, I hope for his sake it's quick and quiet. And for yours.

If not, I hope he recovers fully and has a few more good years. It isn't clear from your post where things stand.

And I know your sister said some hurtful things, but people don't always take such news
in the most rational ways. Just try to understand that she's probably not totally herself at this moment, and neither are you.
There are few things harder than this.

Take care in any case. I'm so sorry.

7. Hugs Ripley...my dad is a stroke candidate too.
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 12:25 AM by BeHereNow
His doctor told him that basically, that is probably
how he will "go."
My dad has major blockage at the base of his
skull and his doctor has been quite frank with him
about the fact that he is a walking time bomb.
My love to you and your family, especially your Dad.
If he is as wonderful as my Dad, I can imagine
how hard this must be on you.
I dread the day I hear this news about my Pop.
I know it only a matter of time.
HUGS-
BHN

Sorry about your sister. My brother...same deal.

I'd like some Charlie Parker, too. So would Mom. She's 78.

13. I'm sorry, Ripley.
I don't "know" you so I don't know the dynamics between you and your sister. But I'm sorry about your dad, and about the problems with your sister. But as someone posted above, people often react strangely to trauma like this, so whatever it is, please don't take it personally.

I wish your father and yourself all the best. Used to be, a stroke was "the end" of things. Now, that's often (and very often) not the case. Keep your spirits up if you can and know your DU friends are pulling for you.

15. I'm sorry
About your sis, sometimes it's easier to be angry than to be grieving. Anger feels better because it gives us the illusion of control, it's active, it makes us want to 'do' something. Grief does NOT feel good; the only thing you can do with grief is to just bear it. You have no control, there's nothing you can do.

Griping about what time she was informed tells me she feels guilty she didn't do more for your Dad, and that she wants to be reassured she is still a vital part of the family (having the head of it taken ill in such a serious way can make us feel awfully insecure.)

Speak to that and ignore the surface b.s.--I'm sorry, this is never easy.

17. Take care of Dad. The sooner he gets the help he needs, the
better he will recover most of what he lost in the stroke. Quick action is what is needed and he will recover his speech and most of his motor function if he gets immediate attention and help from family members.

Tell your sister if she can't be of any help to get out of the way. I know. When my husband had a stroke, I had to tell family members to get out of the way too. My husband totally recovered with only an unoticable small paralysis in one of his hands.

My parents are both 80 yrs old now. My Dad had a bad yr last year in the hospital three times and consequently I was forced to deal with the entire RW family. I'll be sending love and energy to your Dad and especially for you.

Mortality is a bitch to deal with at times, IMHO!

Hang in there Ripley. It often takes a few days for a full assessment. The results of stroke vary widely (I've been through it with my Dad, and as recently as January with my Mom-in-law. I surely hope your Dad's prognosis is good.

32. I don't have any Charlie Parker, but I do have a lot of prayers
coming your way. Hang in there. Your sister is probably freaked out right now and taking her frustration out on you. Not to excuse her behavior. Both of my parents were in the hospital last year and I know how scary it is. So maybe her bitching is her way of hiding her fear. Just a thought. Yet I know it's the last thing you need right now. So take comfort in the thoughts and prayers from your fellow DU'ers and all my best for your Dad to come through this 100%.

47. You got him to the hospital in time. That's good news.
Now you need to find out why he had the stroke. If you're lucky they will find a clot and can take care of it to prevent future strokes. If they can't find anything, don't give up and make them keep looking until they come up with something.

In my husband's case his blood pressure was sky high, which is what triggered the stroke. They had a brain surgeon looking at him who couldn't find anything. I finally took him to a GP and had them run tests. There is a reason for the high BP. They finally found that he was suffering from kidney failure.

It wasn't the best diagnosis you could hope for, but it gave us something to work with to prolong his life and keep him from having another stroke.

52. My mother-in-law had a stroke the end of January--some info
The neurologist told us there are two types of stroke, generally speaking. The ones that involve the smaller vessels and the kind that affect the large vessels. Fortunately, hers was the type that involved the smaller vessels. Just a heads up. She developed a droop on the left side of her face several days after her stroke. That was the only impairment she had. No other physical or cognitive problems. The reason I'm telling you this is that with new therapy techniques, her recovery has been nothing short of amazing!! She had some sort of damage to one of her cranial nerves, hence the droop. In the past, I'm pretty sure that was usually permanent. But 1 1/2 months later, with therapy, her face is now pulling up and there is marked improvement.

So even if your dad has some facial signs of the stroke in a day or so, that does not mean it's permanent. It sound like his prognosis is very good.

Best wishes.
