2. Not much use writing Taft in Ohio
His ratings are a record low, 6% I believe, and he does as he pleases anyway.

5. Yes there is, for history's sake.
All of the letters he receives from constituents will eventually end up housed in an archives somewhere in Ohio. When historians look at his files, they will determine that he acted against the will of his constituents--but only if the letters are in the files. Otherwise, it will appear that the legislation to ban abortion had no opponents in your state.

Haley Barbour is my governor. How much worse can it get? Still, I write letters to him, even though I know it may be futile in causing a change of heart for him. But, in the future when historians research Barbour's governorship, they will see that at least SOME Mississippians challenged him.

:)

if people in Ohio would just get one started. . .the entire state government needs to be recalled and impeached in that Taliban state.

59. Rhode Island is the most Catholic state in the country
I've seen figures as high as 68% of the population. Rhode Island along with Massachusetts, the only Catholic majority states in the country, have state legislatures while overwhelmingly Democratic are much more conservative than their congressional delegations. Wouldn't be surprised to see Massachusetts added to the list.

71. There's no way Massachusetts would be added to the list
Frankly, I'm surprised about RI. I don't think it would pass there either. Most of the Catholics in New England are the 'live-and-let-live' types and not wackos. Both states are also among the lowest in church attendance. A lot of people profess to be Catholic, but that doesn't mean that they go to Church. The pedophilia scandal in MA has done a lot to discredit the Catholic Church.

98. Upon checking the state constitution
there is no mention of abortion or the right to choose. However, the section entitled "AMENDMENTS REJECTED BY THE PEOPLE" states the following:

"A proposed Article of Amendment relative to allowing the General Court to regulate the practice and public funding of abortions consistent with the United States Constitution, adopted by the General Court during the sessions of the years 1984 and 1986, was rejected by the people on the fourth day of November, 1986."

96. I lived in RI
between 1978 and 1992. In 1986 we had a Constitutional Convention. Delegates were elected, and the purpose of this convention was to re-write portions of the State Constitution because much of the language in it was so old, some of it going back to colonial times. Well, we're also talking about the most Catholic state in the country, and also the same year William Rehnquist became Chief Justice of the SC. Some of these delegates decided that re-writing more than the language of the State Constitution was a good idea, and tried back then to make RI an anti-choice state. It was introduced as a ballot referendum that year (prop 13, I think) and We The People absolutely TROUNCED the measure!

I don't think it will pass, though. At least I hope the hell not.

ON EDIT:

Here's what I found: The proposed legislation would make women contact the "father" before the abortion.

However, it seems that there is no provisions in the bill regarding how it will be enforced.

17. Indiana Checking In
(Not My Man) Mitch Daniels, while pro-life, has publicly stated that he is not interested or enthusiastic about such legislation and doesn't seem inclined to favor using laws such as this (nor taxpayer money) to challenge Roe V. Wade. Which doesn't mean that the legislature might not force it on him but I think that that that bill is actually already "dead (at least for this year)." Writing a letter to the governor just in case might not be such a bad idea, however, especially if it comes up again in future legislatures while he is in office(hopefully only until 2008!).

22. Actually, in Mississippi, universities are liberal respites.
Mississippi's universities have very liberal colleges in their universities. AS long as you're in a public university, you can be assured that you will gain exposure to the liberal point of view.

But I do agree...perhaps boycotts of these states are needed. I just hate to see the university system injected into the debate.

35. "We have to act now before it's too late"
It was too late to stop this maneuver in Jan. 2001. Roe v. Wade has been living on borrowed time since then.

Now the question is, when W becomes an ex-president and congress is no longer a GOP shithole, how are we going to put federal protections for access to medicine and medical procedures back into the laws in a way that gets past the Roberts court?

40. They (talibornigain) are moving far too fast.
This will back fire in a historic way (making the change against these moves more solid/permanent) in the long run.

a) Most of the bills/laws are more extreme than the public would want - laying bare the real agenda of the politicized far right. More people who have been "sympathetic", will (as was the case of Schaivo) feel that "this is too far" - and will start listening to local races per where the "line" on the issue is. Many people have been convinced (in the past 30 years) that abortion is, in theory, not good; however many still would want the option in dire circumstances (think anti-abortion figures: Bob Barr and John Fund.)

b) Many moderates (both parties) believed that repubs would fear pushing the potential backlash from the above reaction to such laws, and did not take seriously the threat of Supreme Court judge nominations. More voters will consider this when voting for president and senators. With SO MANY states acting so quickly after the Alito confirmation, the relationship between th realities of these pieces of legislation and a single supreme court nomination is hard to deny.

97. I hope you're right
This seems to me to be one of those knee-jerk emotional pieces of proposed legislation, much like "protection of marriage", designed to get Repubs and Conservatives to the polls. These people are acting like cornered animals, as I've seen a lot of DUers state on other posts. Die-hard Repubs won't switch and vote Dem when their party's in trouble (seen the recent poll numbers?) but they WILL stay home. A single-issue such as this one is enough to get them off the couch and vote.

102. It was published in Oklahoma
I read it in the Daily Oklahoman last month but I can't find an active link now. Here's an excerpt from the Ada newspaper story.

HB 2803 calls for a vote of the people to outlaw abortion in Oklahoma upon the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
HB 2496 requires a woman considering an abortion be told her baby may experience pain during the procedure if he or she is older than 20 weeks.
HB 2369 would require parental consent for a minor to receive an abortion.
HB 3001 requires the Department of Health to implement a program to provide funding to non-governmental agencies that provide alternatives to abortion services.

52. Maybe all the rapists will move to these states. I am sure
they feel more tolerant toward rapists and pedophiles. After all their daughters would be helping to boost the population. How about a law that forces the grandparents to be legally responsible for the children born of rape and incest.Just part of my rant.

This nation is moving faster and faster into the dark ages. What's next, the reintroduction of slavery?

Oh wait, that's already there, only they call it the "guest worker program" and they pay them a pittance in wages that no human could actually live on. :eyes:

67. Massachusetts will be a "civil liberties zone"
At Barney Frank's ACLU-sponsored "emergency town hall meeting" this past Sunday, he raised an interesting concept.

States like Massachusetts should take action to create "civil liberties zones", safe havens for the citizens of those whose liberties have been stripped can come.

All are welcome, regardless of sex, race, creed, color, national origin or sexual orientation.

68. Remind the governor of all the bubbas in their state who will...
be facing child support obligations if women cannot seek safe abortions. Tell them how they will lose the votes of many men as well as women.

Men may not have thought much about this, but DNA testing didn't exist at the time Roe was decided. Now fatherhood can always be proved conclusively.

Whoops. :)

The Governor has said he will not sign it if it comes up. Not because he doesnt support it (hes a Rep), but because he knows it will be appealed and he doesnt want to waste state money on the legal costs of a long appeals process.

82. I will probably get flamed for this, but I say let them go for it.
I don't give a flying fuck about Red Staters. Let them live in the real life version of "The Handmaids Tale" if that's what they want.

I cry for the victims of rape and incest, but I believe there will always be doctors, nurses and others who will risk their professions to help those in desperate need.

A large majority of Americans support a woman's right to choose, and if these states pass laws outlawing abortion even the sheeple will sit up and take notice.

I believe that this is THE issue that has the potential to bury the Republican Party.

84. So if a woman chooses to remain a virgin, like a nun, let's say,
she's committing murder by not turning her eggs into people? I don't understand where this free will stuff ends and begins for women. A woman can decide to not have children in some circumstances, but a woman can't decide to not have children in other circumstances. Such a head-scratcher.

I'm all for youth voting, but isn't your position a little...extreme? I realize you don't have a dog (cat?) in this fight, but try and see it from someone else's perspective. Someone who WILL lose her rights.

If it's all the same to you, I'd rather not go down that road--the road where the rights get taken away and we have to fight to get them back.

Welcome to DU, by the way!

to combat apathy than that one, IMO. And this isn't just about abortion, it's about CHOICE. If you're not anti-abortion, does that make you PRO-abortion? I think not. CHOICE, CHOICE, CHOICE, for ALL of us, even the most apathetic.

I am a nurse in a clinic that provides abortions. The only clinic in a "red" state that also provides abortions for three other "red" state women. Get off your fucking cell phones, quit paying attention to Paris or other mass media trash whores and vote Democrat for the love of God! I still say good for S.D.'s new law. Maybe young people will wake the fuck up and pay attention. I am tired of people saying "I vote republican, but I am pro-choice." Look what the republicans have done now!

Sorry to sacrifice the few for the many, but it is a necessary evil right now to ensure proper healthcare for women in the future. I guess all those pro-choice republicans in SD may be switching parties soon.

88. If the SC upholds the abortion laws of these states, then here is an idea
Here is an idea:

We print up bumper stickers that say, "Need an abortion? Call for free travel to a pro-choice state."

I'm sure that a number of progressive foundations would assist in such an effort, and if not, we could enlist a network of progressives to start an above ground railroad to get women and girls to pro-choice states and back.

It would certainly piss of the religious right.

108. Virginia, Florida, Illinois and Texas clinics will be busy, busy, busy.
These laws may actually help abortion clinics survive in the legal states by keeping clinics there busy with women crossing borders from the "dry" states. For instance, clinics will spring up along the eastern border of Texas the way that liquor stores spring up just across county lines. Or, women may head south to the beaches of Florida for a vacation/abortion package if they have the time and money.

Only the poor and young will die in back alleys.
