DU this poll re: allowing military recruiters on campus!
http://www.cnn.com/

Question is: Should colleges that take federal funds be required to allow military recruiters on campus? Current response is 66% yes, 34% no. As a former financial aid director, I definitely think there should NOT be that string attached to Federal funding---there are already dozens of strings attached, and this one should NOT be required. Schools should be allowed to decide for themselves.

Thanks!

3. Veterans perspective
Recruiters do not need to be on campus to do their job - period. This is nothing but blackmail from the federal government. However, the point will be made when the don't ask, don't tell policy fades into nothingess and gays will be allowed to serve openly in the military. They are allowed to pay their taxes openly now so why not let them pursue a military career if they choose? Because religious zealots hate them? Not good enough reason for this old swabbie.

7. I am with you on this...
Never having attended college, but having spent serious time hanging out on-campus, I have seen some serious mood swings going on.
Take a kid away from home in the middle of a disastrous semester, relationship, financial situation, general depression, etc. and you have the makings of a perfectly malleable recruit.

Then they sign them up for the really cool jobs. :sarcasm:

I do not like this one bit and I wonder if campuses (campi?) would allow taxpayers (who, by the way, are providing operating funds for the schools- the fed just disburses said funds) to establish anti-recruiting stations.

12. Glad to hear it...
...I know you (and all other students) can decide for yourselves whether or not a military career is what you want. When I was a student in the early 1980s, the NSA wanted to recruit on campus, and student protests at my school blew them out of the water. REQUIRING military recruiters to recruit on campuses is ridiculous. Bosshog's reply says it very well.

11. I honestly don't see what one has to do with the other. For one thing,
most federal aid goes to students, not the colleges themselves. The major forms of federal aid are Pell grants, work study and guarenteed/subsidized loans. This aid, while obviously benefitting colleges is given mostly to help students get an education. Some private colleges are affiliated with churches that teach pacifism. Forcing them to accept military recruiters just because some of the students attending there get federal aid would seem to violate the religious freedom of these colleges.

13. It's the same thing as requiring Constitution Day celebrations at
any institution that receives Federal funding. That's actually happened---Robert Byrd sneaked it into last year's budget, and all schools (from kindergarten through college) who receive Federal funding of any kind are now required to hold Constitution Day celebrations and educational programs on campus Sept. 17 of each year. (Never mind if it's on a weekend or a holiday---it still has to happen ON that day.) Schools were and still are up in arms about being forced to do this.
