Personal actions and deeds no longer matter on DU....
Why? Last night I said I was glad "Crash" won over "Brokeback Mountain." I was asked if I saw BBM and I said I hadn't and I'm not interested in seeing it. Somewhere down the line I got called a homophobe because I'm uninterested in seeing a film. Right. So now your own personal sacrifices and deeds and actions no longer matter on DU because I was happy for another film winning and don't care to see the other film. There were other films last night that won that I could care less of seeing. So does that mean I'm against those people too? I never cared to see "Hotel Rawanda" so does that mean I'm rascists and against black people even though I've done all my part to help black people and have had lots of black friends over time? Nah. None of that matters if I'm uninterested in seeing "Hotel Rawanda" right? Just like by me not caring to see BBM doesn't mean anything for me doing what I can to gay people and being called things by other people in my faith. Nah. None of that matters because I'm uninterested in seeing a movie and the story plot doesn't seem interesting to me. Never mind the fact I'm not a very big movie person in the first place but I guess on DU when Oscar times comes that all that matters with a person is whether or not they liked the controversal movie or not. Not personal actions or deeds. Not personal sacrifices. So thanks for letting me have my say.

5. I guess he really liked Crash.
Just because you're for one movie doesn't mean you're against another.

10. It's uninformed, though.
Like saying President Bush is a better President than Al Gore...how the hell would anyone know?

12. On the subject of Bush vs. Gore...I'm willing to take a leap of faith...
and go for Gore.

And this isn't some science experiment. He doesn't need to watch every movie and then make a choice. It's not like he's picking who wins. He liked Crash, he's glad it won. That's it, over. It's his opinion.

13. Not really.
The poster didn't say that Crash was better than BBM, only that they'd seen Crash and hoped it would win. There was no comparison.

It's a simple matter of rooting for what you like. There was no "uninformed" criticism of BBM in the OP, and saying that one doesn't care to see the movie does not equate with criticism.

25. Well gee let's see
BBM got a lot of hype and press and won a lot of awards etc. and "Crash" was the opposite where the press is concerned etc. Everyone expected BBM to win that award for whatever purpose. But it didn't.

6. Some movies just don't appeal to everyone

I have never seen Rocky....I don't ever want to see Rocky. All of my friends saw Rocky in high school and thought it was the best movie....EVER.

I also have no interest in seeing Titanic. I've seen parts of it...not willingly.

So, if you don't want to see BBM...I'm fine with it.

Cheers

8. People need to get a grip. They're just movies.
You can like or dislike a movie for a variety of reasons that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with the theme or the intended "message" of the film.

Just keep living your life and ignore the name-callers.

9. I'm not a big movie fan, either. Me and kef used to love our horror movie
exchanges here at DU - we both loved the genre - heh - even the really schlocky ones. Damn, I miss him.

Hey - big movies just aren't my thing.

11. I don't want to see it...
I don't like sad movies - I can be miserable all by myself. And my daughter, who is more liberal than I am and has a multitude of gay friends at college, told me it was boring. Since we generally like the same movies, I'm not seeing it.

I can't afford to go to movies I'm not pretty sure I'll like. Maybe when it comes out on DVD I'll see it.

Same here with me. I don't have time to sit in the dark for two hours and to waste some money that could be used on gas, clothes, college materials etc.

15. DU definitely has some one issue members
Just like we find in real life.
They wait in the shadows waiting to jump you.
They only start new threads of one stripe. Everytime.
Some of them seem to live only to demonize the 'opposition.'
Alternate ideas will NOT BE HEARD: EVER!
I just ignore them.

26. The nonstop personal attacks might also have upset some people.
Calling people assholes, screaming, etc. do tend to alienate them.

The original post is a very, very self-serving description of what happened last night.

Does that make me scarymoviephobe? Or a raciest against ghouls and goblins?

Truth be told - I really don't like scary movies! And I won't watch BBM either because it is not a type of movie I like.

18. I find it a little offputting when someone says they don't want to see ...
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 01:18 PM by Misunderestimator
a particular film, if that film is clearly about race, or homosexuality, or women's rights... for example. Seems rather unnecessary to say you don't care to see something that others find very inspiring or important in their lives. It's almost a passive-aggressive insult. Everyone has likes and dislikes. I never saw Hotel Rwanda, but I would never say that I don't care to see it. If the occasion presents itself, and there are no other films that interest me more at a time when I have the time to see a film... I would probably see it. To say unequivocally that you don't want to see something seems a little insulting in a dismissive sort of way.

I didn't think I wanted to see Transamerica, because it didn't particularly appeal to me from what I knew of it. However, I did see it Saturday night with friends, and I'm thrilled that I did. It opened my mind to the hardships and prejudice that transsexuals endure, in ways that even I, as a gay person, did not consider before. I can easily imagine that a transsexual person could take offense at someone saying that they did not care to see that film.

Personally, I don't give a crap what anyone wants to see.

Since you are a Fitz fan like I am, I am sure you would like this movie. It's great!

20. Where have you been?
You should know by now that you're not a true DUer until you've been accused of being a freeper, a homephobe, a racist or a sexist.

But honestly, don't you think your blowing this incident a little out of proportion?

21. I do not want to see it and I consider myself bisexual.
I have dated both men and women even though I am now married to a man. My husband wanted to go see this and I told him I just do not care for cowboy movies. They have never interested me and still do not. It is great that the gay issue is getting out there and I hope there may be more acceptance because of it but I still have no interest in seeing it.

We all have our own reasons to see (or not see) a movie. You have yours and we all have ours. We are all supposed to be on the same side so I wish more of us would start acting that way.

It doesn't matter what they say, snobs and opinionated people abound. I know that you are neither racist or a homophobe. I liked Crash too although I haven't seen Brokeback yet either. :loveya:

23. So if you don't like comedies,
you must not have a sense of humor. LOL

I know what you mean though. I had a guy jump all over me last night and say my opinion was "fucking stupid" in a thread about rap music. Like it really matters what lil ole me thinks of ANY music??

I wouldn't let it bother me if I were you. There have been some really strange threads here in the last few days. I called a poster out yesterday and MY post was deleted even though the poster was later tombstoned. It was in that original food stamps thread. That one got kinda crazy.

Must be a full moon or something.

gay, straight or inbetween. I don't like cowboy movies.

And I didn't see Hotel R. because I didn't think I could handle the sadness.

Guess I'm homophobic and rascist too.
