Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) today on CBS’s Face the Nation:

Let me tell you, the only people who want us in Iraq is Iran and al-Qaeda. I’ve talked to a top-level commander the other day, it was about two weeks ago, and he said China wants us there also. Why? Because we’re depleting our resources — our troop resources and our fiscal resources.

RUSSERT: If you were to be asked whether things in Iraq are going well or badly, what would you say? How would you answer?

PACE: I’d say they’re going well. I wouldn’t put a great big smiley face on it, but I would say they’re going very, very well from everything you look at.

The nation’s top ranking military official sounds like just another public relations mouthpeice. Maybe Pace also thinks the civil war is actually a good thing ...

1. Murtha is right on the money

bush's policies are ruining our military; letting it die a slow, painful death and that is making Iran and China very, very happy. I don't like to disagree with a Marine Four Star, but General Pace has apparently turned his stars in for a bush administration spin machine. So sad, that a man of previous integrity is too scared to tell the truth. A Marine General afraid of a civilian boss? So very, very sad.

3. The whole "blame the media" thing is just too much to take

I caught part of Pace on re-run last evening and I could tell he was going to go into the "media is not teeling the real stoty" spiel and it just made me lost respect for the guy. Just because he's a bowl full of fruit salad on his jacket doesn't make him right - or in this case worthy of respect. I guess he's just doing his job but jeez.
