Bolton says nuclear plant can be 'taken out'
US envoy hints at strike to stop Iran

· Bolton says nuclear plant can be 'taken out'
· UN agency meets to send report to security council

The US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, has told British MPs that military action could bring Iran's nuclear programme to a halt if all diplomatic efforts fail. The warning came ahead of a meeting today of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which will forward a report on Iran's nuclear activities to the UN security council.

The council will have to decide whether to impose sanctions, an issue that could split the international community as policy towards Iraq did before the invasion.

...........

Yesterday Mr Bolton reiterated his hardline stance. In a speech to the annual convention of the American-Israel public affairs committee, the leading pro-Israel US lobbyists, he said: "The longer we wait to confront the threat Iran poses, the harder and more intractable it will become to solve ... we must be prepared to rely on comprehensive solutions and use all the tools at our disposal to stop the threat that the Iranian regime poses."

1. When is his term up?
You can see he's just drooling over the possibility of war with Iran. I wish they'd toss him out of the UN already.

That's much too painless an end for Bolton.
Really, if you're going to be anywhere near
where a nuke is going to go off, you want to
be *REALLY* near it. Your brain will never
have a chance to note anything, let alone
searing pain in the microsecond or so between
the time that detonation begins and the time
when you vaporize.

Or, as Dr. Falken famously put it in WarGames:

"Oh, it's all right. I've planned ahead.
We're just three miles from a primary target.
A millisecond of brilliant light and we're
vaporised. Much more fortunate than the millions
who'll wander sightless through the smouldering
aftermath. We'll be spared the horror of survival."

Slim didn't exactly intend to ride the bomb either*; he
just got caught up in the ongoing flow of events (not
unlike the entire Bush "administration").

Tesha

* although he was willing "to harelip everybody on Bear Creek"
by getting near the bombs.

22. Jesse Helms was convinced of Bolton riding with the Valkyries.
He must be considering armeggedon for someone.

see link: http://www.irc-online.org/fpif/republicanrule/officials_body.html

John R. Bolton, the undersecretary of state for arms control and international security affairs, represents the right wing of the foreign policy establishment. How right? In January 2001, Jesse Helms endorsed Bolton: "John Bolton is the kind of man with whom I would want to stand at Armageddon, if it should be my lot to be on hand for what is forecast to be the final battle between good and evil in this world."

I am sure Jesse could recognize good and evil. :sarcasm:

Lots of folks would choose evil. Even if they recognized it.

One of the points that Stephen King's The Stand
drove home to me was that a lot of my then business
associates would definitely be the folks who ended up
supporting Randall Flagg out in Las Vegas. I had sort-
of known that intuitively for a long time, but I didn't
really consciously realize just how morally-bankrupt
my Libertarian techie friends were until King laid it
out in black-on-white for me; then it really rang true.
And I was sadly certain that he was exactly correct.

5. "can be taken out", as in -
- technically/practically feasible
- Bolton thinks it's a realistic option
- the security council thinks it's a realistic option
?

Certainly not the latter because they still have to decide on it.

Technically, sure but that's hardly the only consideration, is it.

Bolton thinks so? Apparenlty (no big surprise), but Bolton does not equal the UN/security council. What he personally thinks about it is hardly relevant.

20. But Bolton is the Admin.
point man on this, & if the US thinks it can take out Iran's program w/nukes, that's pretty relevant. I think Cheney actually planned just such a first strike against Iran. So it's definitely something they've thought about.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't bombing a nuclear facility be not so good for the surrounding 200 miles?

11. It has the potential, if they hit a working reactor. Mentally ill maybe
but not insane (legal term). They know what they are doing and either do not care or want a greater conflict. They can all be held accountable for their actions.

Chernobyl was aided and abetted by the fact that the
carbon (graphite) moderator of the reactor was burning
in a conventional fire and that helped loft much of
the radioactive decay products high into the atmosphere.

Then again, I don't know what type of reactor we'd
be destroying; graphite-moderated reactors were still
pretty popular for plutonium and tritium generation
even here in the good-old U.S. of A. up until quite
recently so that might very well be what theIranians
have.

allow your government to bring upon the rest of the world? How long will you suffer these evil men to take the lives of your loved ones in actions to keep the oligarchy safe and in power? 16. The single most immediate thing we can do to stop the next war
Is organize a campaign to pressure members of Congress in both parties to speak out in favor of seeking direct negotiations with Iran on the issues between our two nations. There are dozens of more powerful statements we could make, but that one is the most immediate and effective way to slow down the rush to war with Iran. The Right wing is on a spin crusade to dismiss Iran as being run by mad men with whom we can not talk.

Here are the conflicting world views. Hawkish: "If someone is dangerous and so wacko that you can't even talk to them, then you just have to take them out." Diplomatic: "You must always exhaust every means to a peaceful resolution before use of force is seriously considered. You should never start shooting before you start talking."

We have to win that battle first before we can stop Bush on this one.
