We need to organize a National Strike Day>>>Redress of Grievances
It has to be done. Now, I am not any good at organizing anything at a grass roots level. So I would like this thread to be full of ideas on a place to start. We can get the word out to the keyboard progressives and from there we start a massive campaign to enlist the people who you wouldn't normally find at your average anti-war march. Joe lunch bucket. Holly Homemaker. Sally School-Teacher. Freddie Fireman. Everyone that is angry at what is happening in this country. A day where 70% of the workers call in sick, keep their kids home from school, don't drive, don't shop, don't do one damn thing to support the system.

Once the work has been done and the people involved have participated, we would have developed the framework to even go bigger. We need to show the government we have the power, through non-violent civil disobedience, to effect a change.

To organize this would take quite a while. We would have to get the message out to apolitical types and educated them as to the outcome we are trying to effectuate. WE WANT OUR GRIEVANCES REDRESSED!!

Let this post be a starting point do discuss ideas and then get the word out. Let it be about action.

1. Yes, we do.
I used to hammer on this idea on this board a couple of years ago but quit addressing it because noone else seemed interested. Well, I'm interested. One day, heck we need one week.

2. But organizing for one day is a start and would be easier at first.
Then think of the base of people that we would have. Then those people would bring in even more people and we could shoot for a week.

We could pick a day that would have maximum impact. Like the day after Memorial Day or Independence Day. A day when the markets have already been closed for 3 days.

6. We need more than one day.
One day and the media ignores you. Look at the protests that have been ignored by the corporate media. Half a million people surrounded the WH and we got a 2 second crawl on CNN. If you want the world to know we are protesting, we have to do it for at least a week. Less than that and you get no coverage.

Excuse my spelling, the spell checker doesn't seem to be working.

7. One day is a start.
It is something that you can get people to commit to. People that don't normally participate in politics, hell people that never vote. Imagine the kaos if 50% of the population didn't go to work, school, or to the store? Also it would bring people together, and could potentially have an enormous impact. We would then have a large base to organize. We have to start somewhere. One day could work.

15. Well, one day didn't seem to help the world can't wait.
They had about a quarter of a million people surrounding the WH and we barely heard a whisper about it. Every now and then they have another one but still the corporate media ignores it.

17. I am not discussing a protest or a march
I am talking about people not going to work, school, to the store. People not driving anywhere not watching the television not doing one thing other than saying "ENOUGH".

There were over a million people that marched against the war in NY. THis is not what I am talking about.

16. YES YES YES YES YES
I fully agreee and have been saying this for a long. However, it needs major national attention. One of the best ways I think to do that is to get Move.On AFSC and Soujourners, Downing Street Memo, DFA and other just groups to agree to put it out there, sign people up and have a meeting spot. Make it a day affair with speakers and entertainment and food so that people will want to come.

But, shut the place down. Share rides, don't use Mass transpo unless needed. Don't do any business. No shopping etc. Do it for a day (A week work day) and then threaten to expand it if needed. See what happens.

I have said for a long time, nothing will change unless those in power and those who are comfortable get challenged.

From my faith tradition: Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable" GO FOR IT!!!!!!

19. Like "Not One Damn Dime Day"?
How do we promote it? We'd have to get some major publicity to get 70% of people to stay home.
