You guys are all stupid... both films sucked...
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 03:46 AM by Wetzelbill
I cannot for the life of me see what people are upset about. Both Brokeback Mountain and Crash were trite, poorly written, overhyped and overdone. The acting was godawful, neither film had decent direction or cinematography. Neither of them were worthy of winning Best Picture.

The best movie of the year by far was overlooked. I mean how the hell does "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" not get a nomination? Here you have a wonderful story, well written and superbly acted by Rob Schneider, that delves into the sordid world of male prostitution. A topic that is vastly overlooked, imho. Moreover, it shows the paradox of an American in Europe. The relationship between Americans, Black people and Europeans are all explored. In this age of terror, when most of the world hates our country and our president, "Deuce" dared to go to Europe and explore a touchy subject. The editing was unbelievable. I haven't watched such a perfect example of resonant filmmaking about a subject so misunderstood in our contemporary culture since I rented Gilles Pontecorvo's classic "The Battle of Algiers" earlier this year. Sure, being a gigolo sounds like fun, but Schneider shows the pain of a tragic figure. He's a sad clown, who is only at peace with himself when he is out... gigoloing. Behind his humor is a tired soul calling out for help. Help that never comes. To watch his character evolve over the course of this series is amazing, much like Frodo's coming of age in the Lord of The Rings trilogy, "Deuce" evolves into something we all recognize. He is one of us, yet none of us all at once. Bravo, Deuce, Bravo! I shed a tear for your trials, my friend!

Also, where was the Paris Hilton best supporting actress nomination for "House Of Wax"?

And, how does Pauly Shore, Gilbert Gottfried and Carrot Top get left out year after after year after year? If there is any prejudice against any actors it's those three fine gentleman right there.

Another thing to ponder, if Mariah Carey doesn't deserve a lifetime achievement award, I don't know who does! The brevity of her performance in "Glitter" alone tops anything Robert Altman will ever do. Ever.

:)

Seriously, both films were great. Both were deserving. Each has it's merits, and we all have our preferences. What it comes down to is just a few votes and a few opinions by people who have varying opinions just like all of us. Each film should resonate for years. Brokeback Mountain is not ever going to go away. So that it didn't win really doesn't matter in the long run. It's a pivotal moment in our culture and will be remembered for that. That's more important than some award.

I can't wait for Mr. Kennedy to come back...

Seriously, you hit it again. There were 5 great films this year in the race, and they were all deserving, IMO. I rooted for Crash, but I would have lived if it hadn't won.

It's just so silly freak out about this..

11. when's he supposed to be back?
I rooted for Crash, I actually didn't see the others yet. Haven't made it out to a theater for a while. I usually just rent everything. But, I'm a big fan of Ang Lee, Spielberg and the others. I'm sure they were all deserving. Some people act like the world was about to end or something, haha. Now if anybody in Oscar history should call bullshit on everybody it would be Martin Scorsese. He's living proof that films don't have to win Best Picture to stand the test of time and be resonant.

I can't wait!

It's just an awards show; if losing doomed a film to failure as a cultural signpost, then films like Network and The Shawshank Redemption
would be obscure footnotes today..

I mean nobody remembers "Taxi Driver" or "Sunset Boulevard," do they? They both lost and have never been heard from since. :)

That seems fast. It just seems like the other week he got hurt. It'll be good to have him back, he was just getting really entertaining.

What do you think of Paul Burchill and his new Pirate character? I think it's hilarious. That guy cracks me up. :)

3. It's hard to be a pimp out here, I'm telling you -
Ever since Saving Private Ryan lost out to Shakespeare in Love I haven't cared one whit what the Academy thinks.

Just like Jethro Tull winning best heavy-metal Grammy.

Awards for art. What a ridiculous notion.

I kept thinking, "Yeah, it's harder to be one of the girls he's selling."

I do not understand what anyone outside of misogynists would see in that song, or why it would be nominated, let alone win. That little break to pump up the pimping was a hell of a lot more shocking than the movies with gay characters that did, or did not, win anything. Just my opinion.

4. I have no idea which movies won tonight, but I agree with you.
The Academy completely overlooks comedy, and comedy is pretty much all I'm interested in, less the far-and-between political documentaries.

Pay for Brokeback? Not me.

How is it that Caddyshack won no Oscars? How 'bout This is Spinal Tap? Completely overlooked.

The Oscars are a fraud.

36. There is only one film that will EVER be worthy of an Academy Award.
"The Howard Dean Story"

And you KNOW that to be the only truth there is, Bill!

Brad Pitt will win an Oscar for his portrayal of Dean, Larry The Cable Guy will have a breakthrough role as George W. Bush, and Leo DiCaprio will win best supporting actor in his role as me.

YOU HAVE HEREWITH BEEN TOLD THE FUTURE!

whole lot of ways that can be taken...

Larry the Cable Guy as Bush? That was pure genius!

Eric Bana will star as me. The lonely drifter who marries Scarlett Johansson (played by Dame Judi Dench oddly enough) and dreams of avenging the death of his trusted dog. :) Meryl Streep will win Best Supporting Actress in her devastatingly powerful role as "Shep" my male Border Collie, who Howard viciously murders with a cross bow.

Rachel Weisz will have a cameo as Judy Dean, who briefly has an affair with me as well. :)

Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 02:18 PM by Kurovski
as comedies are rarely given a best movie nod.

Alternate titles based on your cheap innuendo: "Auntie Flame", "The Flame Game", "Freepers of the Flame" (for the sub-plot of wingnuts who seek to defeat Dean for his lack of negative whining about "the gays".)

Charlton Heston will have a cameo as Fred Phelps, and Yakov Smirnov does a star turn as James Dobson.

Sample dialog for Dobson/Smirnov character: "In America, queens crown YOU!"

I'd say this puppy is ready to ramble out of the pen and into America's heart. The "feel it good movie" of the year.

We'll begin production 6/6/06

37. Only "Wallace and Grommet" was a worthy film this year.
Hollywood has completely lost its connection with its audience. That penguin film got greater attendance than any of the nominated "best films."

If you want someone to blame, look at the owners of the major studios; the megacorporations. They are so afraid of new ideas - that is, ideas that might be critical of the world they are helping to build and their destructive habits - that all they're doing are remakes, rehashes and regurgitations.

At least "Wallace and Grommet: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" was made by a small studio of craftsmen in England who took pride in their work and loved their characters. And DreamWorks distributing it in the states was wise, since their crappy celebrity-driven CGI animated films didn't come close to its quality.

42. Thanks. I AM serious about my fun.
In all honesty, didn't you notice that most of the Oscar cast this year was dominated by clips of old movies? Showing how good movies USED to be? Not so many clips of the current crop.

I don't want to be like my late mother, who sat absorbed by a pile of movies from years past. I want to go to theatres and see something involving and interesting. But with rare exceptions, Hollywood is disappointing me.

And it does have a corporate/political basis. Back when film companies were little, almost family-run businesses, they had to compete and strain and sweat to produce outstanding films. Now that their corporate masters just hand them cash, they don't even try. There is more entertainment and fun in no-name films, often run free on the Internet, than in the commercial product. And that shouldn't happen.
