Why is there such anger when a Dem gets challenged?
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 12:03 AM by Nutmegger
I've seen a couple of posts here and I just want to know why? I mean, for christ sake, this is a freaking democracy! Every Dem from the Liebermans and Cantwells to the McCains and Chaffees - they all need to be challenged in primaries. If they don't get challenged then they just assume that the next election will be cakewalk and the one after that etc.

Primaries serve a purpose. If we don't go through the primary process then no one, not you or I, has the right to bitch.

Look at what's happening to our party! Are you content with this? Is this an appropriate opposition party? Like it or not we live in a two-party system. I want to fight like hell to build our party back up and have my beliefs fought for.

I don't want to turn this into a flame thread. I just wanted to point out that we do have a choice if we feel like doing so.

3. It happens all across the board
Look at Duckworth and her opponent. People are getting their panties up their asses because she has an opponent and she's getting more publicity than her opponent and the opponent's supporters are trying to force Duckworth out because they believe the Christine woman "deserves" the spot. :eyes: Same thing with Paul Hackett. When he did get challenged his supporters whined, bitched and moaned and than when he dropped out started bitching and whining again because Brown started getting support from "belt way" democrats. But yet when the favorite Dean got support from Al Gore I betcha they weren't shitting their pants then. Democrats are allowed to get challenged and I echo what you said. If a canidate you don't like starts getting more press, support, money etc. than that's democracy so fucking deal with it!

4. It may be "democracy" as practiced
but it is not very democratic if one candidate gets money from the big players and corporate donors, support from the party leaders, and press from a conservative corporate media. I certainly like to see non-progressive Democrats face primary challengers, but I hope the issue gets decided by the voters and not by the fund-raisers.

6. Cegelis got 44% in 2004
She's already got a base, why field a primary challenger? I mean it's ridiculous to make winning a seat from Republicans even more difficult with a primary.

The absolutely minimum those opposed to third party challenges can do is to allow - even encourage primary participation.

It's stupid not to do so. A friend of mine that is not at all political was talkin about '08 and he mentioned "some chick might be nominated" by Dems (he was referring to Hillary). Well, I told them that even she would make a better president than whomever the pukes come up with (finally he seemed to agree that he didn't want Jeb winning because he's guessing he'll run).

So I told them something - vote in the Dem party primaries! It's their most effective way to get their voice across. Granted, my own opinion is that voting against Hillary because she is a woman, is a poor reason not to vote for her (there are many other reasons why I will not vote for her in the primaries). But more importantly is participating in the process. But because media coverage of party primaries is relatively superficial, I'll likely be informing them of candidates they would be more interested in.

Regardless of whom they vote for in the primaries (and even in the general election), it's important for people to participate. The people I have the least respect for are not even those dumb enough to have voted for Bush. It's those that bitch about Bush yeet decided not to vote at all.
