Could this help stop these horrible anti-choice laws?
We all know that SD and MS are in the process of passing legislation banning all abortions, including those for victims of rape and incest. Last night on Law & Order, a popular TV show, they tried a case where the child of a serial rapist was murdered by his mother; her defense was that he had genetically inherited his father's anti-social behavior. They actually had a term for it, but all I could remember were the initials, which were CD, I believe. Anyway, experts on the stand said that this mental disorder could be inherited and that there was no cure.

I know most DUers here agree that rape victims should be given a choice if they find they are pregnant. I'm just wondering if having this topic aired on a popular TV show might raise general public awareness of one very good reason why rapists should not be rewarded by forcing a woman to have their child. At this point, I'm for ANYTHING that will make people stop and think about this matter.

Does anyone know any more about this disorder? What do you think about this?

1. I like jury nullification better
We the people can make these laws unenforceable by refusing to convict a doctor or woman put on trial for the "crime" of having an abortion.

4. Oh, I agree
but my point was that a large number of people saw this program. So many people don't believe things unless they see it on the idiot box-look at Faux News. This little bit of information might filter through some sheeple's brains and make them think a little bit about one of the reasons WHY raped women have a right to the option. Now if only ER would do an episode about a woman who finds her baby has water instead of a brain, and she wrestles with the fact it will live only a few hours-and then the fetus dies.....

2. What?
Yikes, must say I think this is a lousy idea whether such a disorder exists or not. I rather doubt that it does. I don't believe our genes dictate our destiny. I'm a nurture and nature sort. In any case, such an argurment would back fire horribly on us. Shades of eugenics.

What we should do is stand back and let them self-destruct with these draconian laws. What we have to be careful about doing is objecting to these laws not because they don't allow for abortions for the tiny percent of women pregnant from rape or abortion, but because they take awy choice from women regarding reproduction.

3. I think this has been scientifically debunked.
The "violence" gene or whatever it is--they had another episode like this awhile back on L&O SVU.

5. I don't think that would help -
the idea of aborting a baby that has genetic predisposition to violence. (I doubt this can truly be passed down genetically, IMO).

If you get into the mind of these anti-choice persons, I think they are basically about putting their Christian ideals onto everyone else. There is a lot of hypocrisy in their stance though. For instance they want the life of the fetus to be more important than the life of the mother. Also you don't hear them trying to rally their base on issue such as death penalty. They really don't care about "diversity" or different people's world views. They want you to do things their way. As to why they care more about abortion than death penalty, I think it has to do with repression of women, something that is in the backbone of their teachings, but not put in those terms really.

6. It might be "Conduct Disorder," which is a juvenile precursor...
...to APD, Antisocial Personality Disorder. Conduct Disorder does NOT inevitably lead to APD, but a juvenile diagnosis of CD is one of the criteria for identifying APD. Here is the capsule definition:

http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/cndctd.htm

Unfortunately, it is very often misdiagnosed or used as a "catchall" diagnosis for kids who have a variety of behavioral problems that don't seem amenable to ordinary therapeutic interventions.

APD does not automatically make someone a criminal, but a good many of the really grotesquely appalling criminals do have an APD diagnosis. Here's the capsule definition:

http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/antisocialpd.htm

Note that ALL FOUR of the criteria (A through D) MUST be present for the diagnosis, but under "A" only three of the seven need to be observed and documents. Item "C" is "evidence of Conduct Disorder with onset prior to 15 years."

It's easy to understand why a lot of criminals meet these diagnostic criteria. However, so do many people who are not in jail for horrible crimes.

Like a good many members of the current administration.

helpfully,
Bright
