TOTAL OVERLOAD! - Is this fucking nightmare ever going to end?
The scandals and outrages are coming so fast and furious it makes the head spin. In a JUST universe this would be great news because it would mean the guilty are being exposed and will pay for their misdeeds. But we don't live in that universe, noooo, we live in some fucked up retard universe where the government can commit crimes with impunity for five years straight and never be held accountable. They simply alter our reality to justify their garbage. I wanna be excited about all the shit hitting the fan, but in BushWorld it will probably just blow back onto us.

Sorry about the meltdown.

2. You're not the only one having a meltdown.
It's getting so bad, I've actually become more depressed than I've been in years. No matter how I try to talk myself into thinking "things will get better," the more I realize I'm lying to myself. We're slipping into the abyss. There's only so much we, as individual citizens, can do. Where is our Democratic leadership?? x(

30. Try to get perspective
It is not the depths of the Depression, nor the despair of World War 2 before we started to win nor the Black Plague that wiped out so much of Europe centuries ago.

I could go on, but you get the drift. We are actually living better in so many ways that anyone in history I can't really give into despair. Let's look for things to do that will help.

3. Don't count this universe out yet
First of all, Bush can forget about his "legacy". He will go down in history as the Worst President Ever. We've kinda known it since he stole his way into office, but history will take the full measure of every day of his misbegotten rule.

The "I" word -- Impeachment -- is also being bruited around Washington.

He stands to lose most of his staff to scandals.

He's an international laughingstock.

If the scandals continue the way they are going, the Republicans may be in for a rout on the order of the Canadian Conservative Party in the election of 1993, when they went from a commanding lead of Parliament, down to THREE seats.

If he is indicted by an International Court on capital charges (e.g., levying war for personal gain), he will be unable to leave the USA for the remainder of his life.

There may be no incarceration, but there is no such thing as impunity.

15. I doubt they're going to lose as bad as the Canadian Conservative Party...
to the point of having only single-digits of congressmen; there's always that set of wackos that'll vote for Republicans even if George Bush murders their parents in broad daylight in full view of them.

These scandals should still REALLY bite em in the ass, though.

They do not control reality.

They control some people's perception of reality, but that number is ever-dwindling.

Hitler appeared invincible for some time to some people.

But, no, we don't have an American president.

19. It's a big country

and the amount of rot it tolerates, now swirling up, is as large.

I lost track a while ago. And surely there's a lot more that hasn't gotten into the papers for lack of time and space.

But this is how The People gets rid of it: it elects the corruption to office and lets it serve and misbehave until it has no useful abilities or excuses left- and the corruption engorges itself until it bursts at the seams.
Then The People simply jettisons everyone involved. Nothing marginal, nothing ambiguous, nothing left to give, politically absolutely final.

It's what happened with the conservative Democrats in 1994. They voted in the balanced budget and tax raises, they balked at dealing with Bosnia, they balked at national health care (as did their constituents), they balked at gay rights, they porked out. They had nothing new left to offer their constituents that either side wanted to do. They were pretty corrupt, which their constituents ignored while they did stuff perceived as useful. When they were perceived as useless, some not inherently large ethical crap gave their voters the final push to turn on them. The ones that didn't lose office in '94 lost or retired in '96 or '98.

There's no 'altering reality' involved with the present Republicans. They simply have some stuff left that The People wants them to do this spring and summer- arguing through the illegal alien problem out in the open, chewing on Roe and abortion and jurisprudence some more, reworking the AMT, getting budget priorities straight (i.e. Iraq). Some of which they might solve, other bits they might bungle, and yet other bits they will do nothing about. Voters will look at their handiwork and argument justifying themselves in the fall, Democrats will point out that there are few or no excuses left to reelect them. Ethics problems are the last thing, the thing that does in the "he's pretty useless now but a good guy" last excuse for an incumbent.

I don't know whether '06 is the end for the present crew of Republicans any more than you do. But when the voters make them go, it's going to be a pretty amazing change. I think no one's quite prepared for how much things will change when they do- there's a twenty plus year cultural gap between the two Parties, between mainstream society in the larger deep Red states and mainstream society in the seriously Blue regions of the country. And all the Red state stuff is leveraged together- without Republicans to protect and subsidize them, the Christian Right is a fragile and easily shattered and already decaying political force. I think we'll all get quite a bit of whiplash from the abrupt lurch forward the country takes when all that (literal and figurative) retardation breaks- never mind the poor grassroots Pubbies with their heads through the windshields, wondering where their Mayberry dreaming went so wrong.

21. No one is doing any checking up on people,
The so called liberal press look to wards their bottom line as they always have but now they are usually not owned by newspaper people but by big corp. They get rid of reporters who look into anything so papers get less interesting so few people read them so they get rid of more reporters. Congress sold out to the party and greed. Every thing is hitting us at once and it is time people woke up to it all. It is a revolution that has been going on and no one really sees it and we would hardly hear a person that thinks new about anything and the one thing we can always count on is things will change and to last you have to also. Lets hope we can keep the basic form of our govt.

I think some of the public, Repubs included are starting to wake up to the curruption of the govt, being it is being put right in their faces. But it's going to take alot more than that to make this administration be accountable for how they've fucked this country up and screwed every single one of us.

25. Time to take the high road.
For instance, Kathleen Parker stated yesterday that she's having trouble mustering any outrage. I say we start calling her unAmerican for not understanding our rule of law, and also calling her immoral because her sense of fairness is warped.

Hey, we're not the ones who are wrong, they are. So shout it from the mountains!

There is the law of diminishing returns when you start operating outside of the law. For one thing, we are no longer in a position to sell Democracy to other countries, if we're unable practice it within our own borders. So when Bush says we're taking Democracy to other countries, we should ask him how he realisitically can do that when he's breaking every democratic check and balance in our own?

40. Some possibly good news for you...
The WSJ is reporting (sorry, no link, heard it on KO last night) that up to 60 Congressmen may be implicated in the Abramoff scandal. And we know that most, if not all of them, are GOP because Abramoff hated liberals.

I've also heard that Abramoff has over 10,000 emails that clearly expose the exact terms of the bribes and favors of these elected officials. (Sorry! No link here either, and no time at the moment to dig one up!)

So, provided Fischer (Justice Dept Criminal Division head) doesn't completely block all of these investigations, no matter HOW corrupted the voting machines are, they can't possibly keep the House and the Senate, with up to 60 of them facing indictments.

(You can't steal an election unless it's relatively close.)

So, there is reason to be optimistic, in my opinion.

41. Oh, and one more thing, possibly HUGE...
If it's true that Mohammad Atta was seen on Abramoff's Sun Cruz gambling boat just before 9/11 (just Google this and it'll come up--I read it on Bradblog a while back), then it's POSSIBLE that Abramoff has the goods on Bushco and their role in 9/11!!

Clearly, I was doing some serious fantasizing last night about all of this, but in a universe of infinite possibilities, anything is possible!

The GOP and the Fundie Wackos have reached critical mass and are about to collapse in on themselves under the incredible pressure their evil has laid on their backs.

Then they'll explode in a fireball of righteousness and the blinding light of Freedom and Justice and Hope and Compassion will shine again.

The only thing better than witnessing their wholesale destruction, is laughing my fuckin' ass off as they eat each other's faces off simultaneously :)
