Miss. House Advances Bill to Ban Abortion
By Associated Press
Wed Mar 1, 8:13 PM

JACKSON, Miss. - Gov. Haley Barbour said Wednesday he would probably sign a bill under consideration in the state House that would ban most abortions in Mississippi.

The measure, which passed the House Public Health Committee on Tuesday, would allow abortion only to save a woman's life. It would make no exception in cases of rape or incest.

Barbour, a Republican, said he preferred an exception in cases of rape and incest, but if such a bill came to his desk: "I suspect I'll sign it."

The full House could vote on the bill next week, and it would then go to the Senate.<snip>

6. What's sicker is there are ways to stop the pregnancy before it even
really begins.

Ever read Peyton Place (or seen the movie)? There's a story line about a girl who is raped by her stepfather. She goes to the doctor for some other reason, he sees what's happened and promptly takes care of the situation.

Let's make a deal. No executions, including state and federal, ...
remove troops from Iraq and then we can talk about how ridiculous it is to establish an "anti-abortion" law, which will cause more deaths.

We have friends who have lost their homes... completely gone... only slabs left, and the lucky ones are now living in those little FEMA trailers on the land where their homes once stood. (By the way, the insurance companies are screwing them as well.)

crap war/quagmire, Katrina, spying, Dubai, etc.

So their only move is to flog their zombie cultists to the polls by fanning the abortion flames.

South Dakota and now this is probably part of a coordinated strategy.

11. "Probably"?
It is most certainly a portion of a coordinated strategy. These dorks are nothing if not coordinated. That is all they do well is find some stupid issue that their narrow minded bigoted base can wrap their hateful little minds around and come out to vote to deny some group their rights. That is what they are good at is taking other people's liberties away!

9. I actually understand the "no exception for rape/incest" people more than
I understand the people who are stridently anti-choice EXCEPT for rape/incest.

Why?

Because if abortion is murder because the fetus is a person (as they contend), the fact that the conception occurred under violent circumstances doesn't somehow make the fetus not a person anymore. In other words -- it's consistent. And I respect that, even though I vigorously disagree.

Besides -- this isn't really intended to make abortion illegal in Mississippi. It's intended to get the newly reconstructed SCOTUS to review Roe -- which could, theoretically, work in our side's favor (although I'm not holding my breath).

in the way of efforts to get them off the streets here--seems we have to raise funds and assist in transporting poor women to neighboring states to obtain safe, legal abortions and thereby make the end run around these efforts in MS. If, heaven forbid, the worst happens in this country, there will be a black market for morning after pills and abortofacients like no one ever saw! There is no way we will put up with turning the clock back to the 1950's. Lot's of old ladies, like me, are gonna form an "underground railroad" the likes of which will make the fascists' heads spin! We're not gonna abandon our daughters to these neanderthals!

Let me guess: the Ohio anti-abortion law also contains pregnancy registers, live-birth registers, stillbirth registers, five-year prison terms for any registered pregnancy that isn't subsequently entered onto a birth register, ten-year prison terms for unregistered pregnancies, seppuku for any physician who has ever performed an abortion, public beheadings for any woman who gets an abortion, abortionist-hunting licenses, no exception for life of mother, health of mother, rape, incest, fatal birth defects...

14. Sometimes my age shows when I slip and say something that could
be considered offensive to the female gender. I am not a conscious misogynistic schmuck it's just that my formative years were those when
gender disparaging remarks were part of the ether. I really do appreciate what backward times those were.
So, considering the ways a misogynist could express himself I cannot think of a more vulgar, cruel, inhumane, insensitive, pompous,
male pig like way to do it than this Mississippi law. I am sure many there who support this law think they are being good Christians.
If we just stop for good right at the Golden Rule wouldn't laws like this seem pretty damn evil?

20. I live in Mississippi. Let 'em outlaw it.
I'm tired of fighting with women who just don't give a good goddam about the rights they should have. They want to be raped by their daddy so that they can give the kid to their fundie neighbors, let 'em do it. They want to buy into biblical teachings that tell them never to question a man, let 'em do it. They want to work for half of what a man in the same job makes, let 'em do it.

The problem in Mississippi isn't the men. No, it's the stupid, ignorant fucking women.

When I finish my PhD, I'm the hell out of here. I've given up on this place.

34. That's where you're wrong. The women of Mississippi want this shit.
They vote, too.

I'd venture that only 10% of women in Mississippi are pro-choice. Hell, I know a woman who had an abortion after she was raped when she was 12. Yes, TWELVE. And she's "pro-life," now. Has a daughter now--she would restrict her daughter from the benefit of a right she used.

I'm telling you. It's not the men here as much as it is the women. They have some idealized goal of "virtuous womanhood," and they find the dumbest ways to reach it.

Stupid fucking women in Mississippi.

30. Actually this proposal liberalizes the MS law, & adds significant benefits
The AP article you reference is not linked, but it must skip over some important points.

The bill was introduced and got through the committee by Steve Holland who has always worked against additional restrictions on abortion. This bill allows consideration of the life of the mother which the current law does not, plus the bill also requires the state to provide the health care and education of all children.

The fundies were undoubtedly champing at the bit to force a bitter bill through so as not to be outdone by SD. Holland finessed them brilliantly. I will be surprised it it passes.

Check this post from yesterday by Sgent, and the local article it refs.
