Ferry to Alaska becomes pawn in political dispute over Arctic drilling
In symbolic move, lawmaker proposes ending states' link

ABOARD THE M/V COLUMBIA, Inside Passage, Alaska -- He loads them every time the ship docks in Bellingham: the backpacking Seattleites and military families on base transfers, foreign travelers looking for a quirky vacation, cannery workers, fishermen, new fire engines or road equipment for remote ridge-and-water-locked villages.
Fish trucks heading south. Vegetable and fruit haulers going north. All Alaska-bound or -born. Most with little other way to reach the state's rugged, highway-free southeastern panhandle from the Lower 48.
