"Yeah, I'm impatient! I'm impatient for a new president!" -- Retail clerk
I was doing my all-American duty today, shopping for various items at a nationwide discount retail chain (no, not Wal-Mart), when I overheard two clerks, stocking shelves, in an animated discussion.

The guy was saying "Yeah, I'm impatient! I'm impatient for a new President!" And the woman he was talking to said, "So am I, but it's a new year," and then something along the lines of "let's see what happens," and "trusting voters."

While I probably disagree with that latter observation -- though a majority of Americans did vote Democratic in the last two Presidential elections -- I thought it was interesting that two clerks at a chain whose corporate class is very red (got a sis who happens to work in hdq.)were having a very loud, unrestrained, unapologetic conversation about how bad our current "leader" is.

But what will this discontent in the "nonpolitical classes," as the academics might say, actually translate to? Especially if/when the Republicans steal yet another one in November?

Nonetheless, as Will Pitt said in one of his essays the other day, "drip, drip, drip..."

1. "Trusting voters" woman is an embarrassed * voter
She's hoping for a miracle in 2006 because it's dawning on her the colossal mistake she made. I've got a Republican friend who was gloating when shithead won but now the only thing she'll say about politics is "Well, I vote Dem half the time. I care more about the candidate than the party!" Yeah right. She was all GOP all the way last year. But I just nod my head and smile.

5. I couldn't tell if she was apologizing
...or just counseling more "moderation" than her friend...

6. the question is: how many clerks, in how many stores
are having the same conversation? And what are they willing to do to affect change?
