1. I know several couples who've had fraternal twins the old fashioned way. Naturally-occurring twins run in families, for whatever reason, although the incidence has soared since the advent of IVF.

2. Lots more women than you might think have needed a little help from the doctor -- e.g., don't ask me how a Fallopian tube can get collapsed, but I know two women for whom it was the case, and the treatment was to inflate the tubes with nitrogen. After such treatment in the mid-1940s one of my aunts gave birth to her two sons; one of my friends had her daughter and son in the early 1970s. Their post-treatment instructions were the same: Go home and get pregnant without delay because we don't know how long this'll be good for. They had two kids each -- not twins.

Somehow I find this question queasily misogynistic. If Laura Bush needed medical help with her pregnancy, she has my sympathy.

As has been pointed out before this: the Bush women are pro-choice. Daddy used to be affiliated with Planned Parenthood when it was a respectable thing for a Methodist to do. This point was brought up during the 2000 campaign, as a wink/nudge to Republican pro-choice women that they might be safe in Bush's hands. As with so much else, that was an illusion.

Politically and maritally the Bush women have literally made their beds and must lie in them. I can fault them for their more or less silent complicity, but not for their reproductive troubles, if any.
