With O’Reilly as Guest, Very Serious Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan
Posted by Brent Baker on January 3, 2006 - 22:46.
Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on tonight’s Late Show David Letterman will go further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war. I know this thanks to the “Big Show Highlight," a two-minute streaming-only RealPlayer preview of tonight’s program, which is now featured on the Late Show’s home page.

In the posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demands: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fires back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.”

1. Right, they got the clip up at the CBS site in record time
http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/#

Click on highlights, takes a while to load.

Letterman is one of the best political interviewers out there, probably because all the hacks expect him to be some sort of goof who just does stupid pet tricks.

He's always worth watching when he's got some hack from either party on.

19. No, he's saying that Sheehan used the term, while on his show
Not defending him mind you, just trying to clear that up.

I don't recall the exact quote, but I believe Cindy was referring to insurgents in general in Iraq, which O'Reilly of course twists into her conferring an honorific of a sort on terrorists. The man is a professional asshole.

135. Oh, OK... I was wondering. Thanks for the explaination.
I think Letterman was saying, "How can you be so cruel to a Gold Star mother?" then O'reilly starts in on terrorists who blow up people. I didn't get the connection until you explained it to me. I don't watch Fox, even when they have Dems as guests.

170. I did a quick Yahoo search and found it ONLY on wingnut sites
I didn't find a single credible site using "Sheehan freedom fighters", LET ALONE a site that actually had her using the phrase. The only ones that turned up in the first few pages were freepish sites. Sort of like the "Cindy was lying on her son's grave--Vanity Fair published a photo" allegations--found only on wingnut sites.

So I'm with you. i don't believe she said anything like what he claimed. It is truly a shame that Dave was not armed with more facts because he could have been far more devastating to Bill than he was.

178. That's how O'Loofa operates....
...in order to try and disarm his opponents (when shouting them down doesn't work), he just makes shit up out of thin air. Cuz it just might fly, if he sells it with enough zazz. O'Reilly knows Letterman wouldn't be able to disprove on the spot such a claim, so he made it, and it worked. That's to say, Dave was forced to simply slag him personally instead of stay on point about the Iraq war. Still, it was good tv, and I laughed when Dave made the crack about "60 percent crap". I think Letterman may have got up yesterday morning with a bee up his ass - about whatever...realized that O'Reilly was going to be on his show that day, and decided to make O'Reilly his bitch. Or, maybe this was all just the culmination of Dave's growing criticisms of the Bushies in his monologues and elsewhere in the show. Whatever it was, it was great. And ultimately, it's not up to Letterman (or Jon Stewart, or Ted Koppel for that matter) to prove Cindy Sheehan didn't call the insurgents "freedom fighters"....it's up to O'Lielly to prove it. Had Dave asked him to PROVE that, he would have had Bill completely on the run. Oh well, hindsight and all that...

181. my brother interpreted it this way:
it's a brilliant strategy NOT to try to argue rationally with people like O'Reilly. I suspect he means that the surprise value of an irrational response that one can't anticipate, keeps Bill off-balance and keeps him from effectively (for morons) pressing his points.

He may have a point. But I agree with you--it would have been fun for Dave to ask BO to prove something, but probably he would have had "authentic sounding" info ready, that would have fooled the people in the crowd who didn't know any better (and there were plenty in Dave's audience, who seemed to like other things BO said).

143. Sounds like Letterman meant "anything but endless sympathy"
When you listen to it, that's the sense of his statement. The double negative is confusing, but what he apparently is trying to convey is, "I'm very concerned about people like yourself who have anything but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan."

Or, it could be interpreted as "...people like yourself who don't have endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan."

171. He didn't even go as far as he could have
but he did a good job.

Bill, the few incidents you have that actually happened (as opposed to the Plano etc. incidents that YOU ADMITTED were lies) occurred because PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT RELIGIONS or make kids who are compelled to attend them feel like second class citizens because theirs is not the majority religion or because they may not be religious at all. It is a more difficult concept than you are capable of grasping but do a little reading about the separation of church and state and try to think in a principled way. It may finally sink in.

I've been a Letterman fan since before he dressed in the velcro suit and trampolined up against the velcro board. Since before he swam in a vat of Jello. Way long. Never ever have I seen him so visibly pissed off at anyone, let alone a guest. He's been steaming even after O'Lielly left. Hell, he wasn't as steamed as this about that stalker gal he had to have restrained.

130. The War on Crap
Letterman consciously held back 40 percent crap value when he said a mere 60 percent of O'Reilly's utterances were crap. Why this deliberate de-crapping? Another fine example of not giving an absolute crap when full crap value is due. As with last month's War on Christmas, O'Reilly should go forth and hammer this point home relentlessly for the next several weeks. As one who has been summarily "crapped down", Mr. Bill needs to vindicate himself once and for all against these outrageous remarks.

Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 12:25 AM by Strawman
Letterman/Leno the late night network talk shows are the embodiment mainstream television and mainstream culture. He shapes mainstream opinion alot more than O'Leilly. What this tells people is that this O'Leilly guy is a clown who is outside the mainstream. If others who are influential in the MSM follow Letterman they can really marginalize this guy and Fox News.

Or it could just be more visibility and publicity for O'Leilly if it is not sustained. My advice to Letterman: Don't invite him back on and act like you respect his opinion or that he actually speaks for anyone. Never have him on again. Ever. Don't legitimize this asshole even if the network execs tell you that your sparring with him makes good TV.

That is not a defense of Bill O'liely.

I wish Letterman said we should leave Iraq now, instead of saying its going to take a long time to finish up (sounds like his crazy Senator... i won't mention HC).
I wish he knew the Christmas things were not true (or their real context) so bill would have looked worse.

Letterman also said he was not as informed as bill... so that hurt him too.

Still glad he expressed some anger at bill... something we all share.

82. Just wrote this thank you note to The Late Show
Thank you, Dave! Thank you for standing up to O'Leilly. In the twenty plus years I've been watching you on TV, I've never seen you get political in that way. It's not your job, you didn't have to do it, and I know you'll catch some shit from the right-wing nuts out there, but someone with your profile needed to put this asshole in his place and call him out. Thank you.

The Late Show and the Tonight Show embody mainstream American culture. Even though you mostly joke around on your show, you have an enormous amount of credibility to hundreds of millions of Americans. I'm sure you are well aware of that already. What you essentially said to America tonight was: "C'mon folks. There should be no place for this rotten s.o.b. and his bullshit in the American mainstream." I hope people get the message.

Obviously, you can't do this kind of stuff all the time on your show. Probably once or twice is the limit. I'm glad you decided to spend this capital to take on O'Leilly.

Having said that let me also ask this: please don't ever have O'Leilly on again. Don't ever invite him back on and make nice with him and don't legitimize him by having him on as a regular guest, even if the network execs tell you that your sparring makes good TV. This thing with you and O'Leilly can go one of two ways. It can either ostracize this clown or give him more publicity. This guy isn't like Wally George who everyone could laugh at and you can have on for harmless fun. He's more like Father Coughlin. Don't give him a platform to spew his garbage on your show again.

102. I'm writing Dave with heart-felt appreciation, also...
...it's almost like Dave went to see "Good Night and Good Luck" and became inspired by how main-stream television can take down a hate-monger that is shoving the country towards fascism...picked up the phone and said, "Book that McCarthyite bastard O'Reilly for the show...I'm gonna go all Edward R. Murrow on his phoney hate-talking ass."

105. Dave gets it ...
He's middle of the road politically, but he gets it. From the start he's been outraged by * and the actions of this maladministration. He's an Indiana boy who can't believe what's being done to this country.

The true patriots rise in these dark political days.

109. Go Letterman!
I believe that the only reason he was able to say what he did is that Redstone broke up Viacom that morning. Maybe CBS will be more liberal from now on. BTW, I was watching Bloomberg and that fossil Summer Redstone was being interviewed. His last comments were that he hoped Bloomberg would continue with their winning ways. You see, Bloomberg's comperitor is MSNBC, a jointly owned company of Microsoft and NBC. NBC is wholly owned by GE and all of whom are quite conservative. Go CBS!

113. Dave missed a golden opportunity.
He accused FoxNews of not being "Fair and Balanced" and when O'Reilly dared him to cite examples he couldn't. With a little web research beforehand, Letterman could have torn FNC a new ass.

"I wouldn't know, I don't watch your show" sounds like a cop-out.

Dave was talking from the heart - it wasn't a political assault. He did more than anyone else on TV - far more - and you say he missed an opportunity?

I think some perspetive is in order here.

I have two words to describe O'Reilly: "fucking" and "scumbag". That asshole goes off about Sheehan calling the terrorists "freedom fighters" but then goes and tells AQ that SF is "fair game". And what happened as a result of those comments? Not a fucking thing. Fucking scumbag....

122. Welcome to Billy's Shit List Dave...
...Just wait. O'Reilly will be all over Dave today. He'll be relentless. Everything Dave ever did will be hammered and hammered for days and weeks to come. That's the way the weasel works. Fortunately the only people that would otherwise be witness to his, O'Reilly's, rants will be the numb-nuts that actually tune into his 60 plus percent BS show...unless, of course, folks keep allowing him to traipse his act out on 'regular' TV without burying him as Dave did.

Way to go Dave, I always liked you better than the watermelon-head on ABC.

You could tell Bully Billy was really pissed but he just had to sit there and take it. As Franken said to him in that classic exchange, "this isn't your SHOW, Bill . . ." He doesn't get to cut the mike and vent for twenty minutes.

Letterman: "Why don't you send Cindy Sheehan a (Factor) hat?"

Now that's "must see" TV, heh.

150. Letterman could have done much better...
really uninformed.
Letterman said that we had to stay in Iraq now that we are there. There is no excuse for this kind of ignorance and really buying the stupidity of Bush and his apologists (hillary and joe and even kerry with his benchmarks shit). No excuse for an american not to know what is being done in their name.
He should have Cindy Sheehan on... maybe he will.

On a less important note:
Letterman rightly said that the Christmas thing was bullshit, i wish he knew about the hoaxes bill o'really was trying to pass off as fact... that is not a big deal, one of those nice interns should have informed him. I excuse him for that.

Still, he was very angry at Bill, and saw him as the bullshitter he was... but letterman's equivocation hurt him.

166. Hat's off to Dave
I've always liked Dave.

I got to interview him in '95 when I was in the Navy. He had a whole bunch of sailors run onto the stage during Fleet Week in NYC. He does it almost every year.

I was there to get quotes from the sailors.

The producer of the show wasn't very kind in letting us in, but we managed to get into the Ed Sullivan theater.

While we were waiting to talk to some of our shipmates, Dave was rehersing for the show and taping some things in advance.

It was the show that featured Garbage and when Dave read a viewer mail that asked him how he kept such a young look. The skit had him jump down and run through the crowd to the Ed Sullivan lobby, where he was taped earlier putting popcorn butter on his face. Ah, the secret of looking young.

Anyway, during the rehersal he was playing catch w/ Paul w/ a football and jumped down from the stage to do something else in the lobby.

The photographer and I were talking when all the sudden Dave pops up behind us and just starts shootin' it.

It didn't take make a half-second to ask him for an interview, he no more than said yes and the photographer handed me the mic and was rolling.

He gave us some great stuff about the tradition of putting the sailors on. To boot, he even gave us a bump to use for our show.

For the bump he said, "Hi, I'm David Letterman and this is Navy/Marine Corps News, and if you're watching this there's something deeply wrong with you," followed by the classic big Dave grin.

Upon first seeing it, my CO thought it was dissing the Navy, but I told him that it was classic Dave and a huge privilage for Dave to give ANYONE an impromptu interview and a bump to boot. Dave was only being sacastic by dissing himself, not the Navy ... of course.

My CO and chain of command saw things my way, it aired on our show, was seen fleetwide, and the rest is history.

Probably one of the best spots on the show. Dave was great and has always been one of my favorite entertainers ... his ability to be objective and question things instead of "wearing the flag over his head" makes me even more of a fan.

That day I got to meet Paul and the other behind the scene guys at the Late Show. Everyone was great and the red carpet was really put out for us. The exec producer just had her panties in a bind because we were a variable she didn't count on. After we talked to Dave, and he gave us the grand welcome, everything went great.

One of these days I would love to have a beer w/ Dave and just shoot it. I know he's a great guy.

The day he goes off the air will really be a sad day. I've watched him since his days of smashing things w/ a steam roller, dropping things off a high tower, crushing them w/ a press, etc., etc. Those were the days.

He still has a great show. Cheers to Dave for standing up to Bill the idiot.
