repubs launch new attack on California teachers! - >
my summary of article appearing in the current issue of "california educator" put out by the California
Teachers' Association:

Republican assemblyman Keith Richman (Northridge), a candidate for state treasurer in 2006, has introduced a bill
for an amendment to the CA constitution to privatize pension plans for CA teachers. bill would require teachers hired
after July, 2007 to enroll in a similar plan to the social security privatization scheme proposed by Bush. This repub
plan would be a defined contribution plan, which does not guarantee specific benefits.

Newly hired teachers could NOT sign up for the plans currently held by teachers.

This new repub plan would create a two tiered retirement system, with new hires getting far less than current hires.

a teacher COULD NOT get retirement benefits if they quit before reaching the age of 65 except for disability reasons. Currently teachers with many years of service can retire at any time, even though they might have lower benefits by not waiting until age 65.

BTW most teachers in CA who retire do NOT get social security as they have paid into the state fund and do not pay
into SS.

California will need more than 100,000 new teachers in the next 10 years, and this new republican attack will make
teaching less attractive.

-end of summary -

My opinion: the repub plan is part of an assault on the teachers' UNION, the CTA, which played a big role in sinking arnold's vicious attacks on working people in last year's election. it is also an attack on working people in general.

The republican myth is that teacher retirement is bankrupting the state. The TRUTH is that the fund that gets money from teachers
and schools for retirement is the biggest retirement investment group in California and annually returns a huge profit on invesments
that covers all the costs of retirement pensions paid out.

6. Bring it on!
It worked out so well for them last time. LOL

Didn't our state legislators just give themselves a 12% raise? Did they think we forgot?

California lawmakers to get 12% raise

Wage increase makes legislators best-paid in U.S.

SACRAMENTO - Most California lawmakers will get a boost Monday to help with their holiday shopping - a 12 percent pay raise that will bump their annual salaries to $110,880 and ensure their place as the best-paid state legislators in the country.

SNIP

Lawmakers also receive $153 a day in expense money when they're in session.

7. I don't see this as having much hope of getting out of comittee
I'm not *that* familiar with the inner workings of the CA legislative process, but the Dems have huge majorities in each body. I don't think this is going anywhere.
