How does someone take a "screen shot"?
I am technically challenged unless I get simple directions :)

Also, I remember reading here on DU how important they were during election night

I'd appreciate any help

Thanks

1. i've been wondering this too--when i was digging into the jeff gannon
story last year i had a really tough time finding screenshots taken by other people to use for info--i wish i could have taken them myself.

while we're at it, what the hell is "kicking" a post? i have been wondering this for weeks lol.

5. See my other post re: screen shots, "kick" just means adding to a thread
to help move it up to the top of the page. :-)

7. Kicking a post
would look like what I just typed in the subject line although usually just the word kicked n/t (for no text) and it is done so that other people will read the post because you consider it important and it goes back to the top of the page

3. Do you mean an image on your computer, or from a TV?
The first is fairly easy, the 2nd requires a video capture card in the puter. ;-)

4. whatever window you want to screen shot
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 02:37 PM by Caoimhe
make sure its on top, highlight the top bar if you must
then hold down ALT and press PrtScrn (Print screen) which is usually above or near your num keypad. This takes the entire window and puts it on your clipboard. You won't see anything happen, but it's there. Then open your favorite paint or photo editing program (even Microsoft Paint works) and hit Ctrl-V to paste it. THen you can save it as whatever you want.

Sorry I didn't clarify, this is for MS Windows, which I use. My brother taught me that little trick years ago and I love it. Can do a screen shot of anything, but haven't been able to get it to work on streaming video!

6. Depends on your 'puter
Macintosh: command + shift + 3.
PC: F13

And kicking a post simply means that you're putting thread on top of the page to ensure maximum exposure.

8. On Windows
you use the Print Screen (prt sc) button then paste in MS Paint of whatever.

I know there are a few apps out there too but I just stick with plain 'ol Print Screen.

You can also hit "ALT" + Print Screen to copy the current active window.

Hope this helps!:hi:

It's easy to use (even for me :) ), free for a trial period, then $19.95 for a license.

10. On a Mac
You just hold down the "shift," "command (apple)," and "3" keys and it will take a picture of your whole screen, depositing it on your desktop as a .png file named "Picture XX"

12. Or...
...shift, apple 4, which gets you a scalable window! One more reason why I love Macs (that and printing to a PDF whenever I want! Oh, and the zero viruses thing, too!)

if you had been 30 yards away, it would have been just fine.
